Chapter 579: THIS WAS A CODE BLACK!

21 FEBRUARY, SUNDAY, BEDTIME

Now that my plan was benched, everyone could go to bed... Well except for the betas. Beta Lucas had to plan the detailing and signal code orange to the rest of the pack. My betas had to assist and reschedule and prepare the gear we'd need should my plan get un-benchced.

Alpha Gunter and River were put up in the packhouse's guests rooms. We didn't usually host our guests overnight, Dad wasn't the kind of Alpha who had overnight visitors on a regular basis, and in the rare event when we did, we'd reserve rooms for them at Gate City. Even Uncle Louis.

Which was Dad's original plan - to house Alpha Gunter and his wolves at the Langston. But Alpha Gunter wanted to stay close. Furthermore, River had the stone on him and it wouldn't do for the warlock to get out into Gate City looking for it.

It was all thanks to the playdate and sleepover I had with my school friends that these facilities were available today.

The guests rooms in the packhouse had been refurbished, and we had a suite made ready for Alpha Gunter and a few rooms opened for River and the others.

Because it turned out that my betas had a minor renovation done, not just to update the few guest rooms we used, but also to convert two of them into a suite just so that the young Alpha Henry had "something decent" to stay in while he was here.

A whole suite? We set up a whole suite for that guy? Oh well, it was pretty lucky we had it on hand now though.

So here I was in my own room, I was supposed to be cramming for the exams... but tomorrow was English, and I only had to stare down some letter writing formats. Of course, I could be mugging for science or history or geography or... I would be burning the midnight oil for a few nights, but not tonight.

Tonight, I was writing in my diary, urm... practicing my English. Yeah. That's what I was doing. My cheeks were still red remembering... because right after I had pointed at Bell, and yelled, "Especially you!" because I was so sure he might just decide deal with the warlock behind my back, he had to smile that beautiful smile and it hit me like lighting, my mate was sooo... handsome. ~ ❤️

And as if to make sure to put the nail into the coffin, Mate winked at me!

If I were the type to swoon, I would.~ ❤️

But because I wasn't, I only stood there like a petrified rock with my mouth hanging open. Yeah, not my coolest moment.

I only came round when the ladies tittered something about young love burning. So I yelled, "That was NOT love!"

Because the only thing burning was my face.

So now, not only did I have no reassurance or promise from my rebel luna not to take things into his own hands and run into the warlock forest on his own, I had made myself out to be an utter fool in front of EVERYONE else - including my new Mentor, Alpha Gunter.

That was embarrassing. Maybe I should rename this diary, Chronicles of Sam's Acutely Embarrassing Moments. I seemed to be collecting quite a number of these since I've started writing the diary.

Speaking of embarrassing, in the facing page, you would see a full page of little hearts - the language of love, written line by line, because I was still trying to get that out of my system... that smile. ~ ❤️

Why did he smile at me like that? I was grounding him! Shouldn't he be mad? I would have been furious and called him a bunch of names - all the usual names, you know, dumbbell, stoopid... I can't really remember the other names. My mind went blank at the megawatt smile. Didn't he know he had that effect on me?

Ooooohhhh! HE DID KNOW!

Grrr... that Bell! He purposely manipulated me! How dare he! He totally played me!

Yeah, it took me an entire page of little empty hearts to realize it too! So much for my gift on insight.

Well, two can play that game. I could be charming too. Probably. I mean, I've never tried, but if I did, I would nail it. Probably. Yes, I realize there were a lot of probablys here, but I was at a disadvantage in this game of love simply because unlike my heart throb mate, I was completely inexperienced in this kind of thing, and also completely un-heart-throbby. I think the only times I made a guy's heart beat faster was on the training mat.

I was the girl you want to kick butt with, not go out with, you know?

Okay, chill, I was only 15! I've got lots of time to practice - I even have a mate to practice on.

But being charming, and making my mate's heart flutter... these things, its like preparing for an English test - I had no idea what to prepare.

So I decided to try dealing with it in the same way, write in my diary and go to bed early. It wasn't too late, really, just a little past 8pm. We had dinner after the meeting, and Mum even let me take up my dinner just now when I told her I hadn't studied.

I ate, took a shower, and wrote hearts. Yeah, so... that's one page of hearts for Mate, and one page of English words for my exam tomorrow. I can go to bed now.

I climbed into the golden clamshell that was now my bed. It seemed like just yesterday, the golden clamshell was just a ridiculous bedroom concept. But as I slid myself between the lemon scented sheets and watched the atmospheric lights play like water ripples on my ceiling. I clapped my hands sharply together twice and the water ripples light effect dimmed out into a quiet darkness.

I snuggled deeper into my pillow, feeling sleep shut my lids.

Yes, my exam was tomorrow. Was I worried? Like I said, it was English. And anyway, I was a master procrastinator, I would worry about worrying about it tomorrow.

THEN WTH WAS I AWAKE? I sat up feeling extremely annoyed, and then I realized I wasn't in my bed. I wasn't even in my room! Oh great!

My exam starts tomorrow! Goddess! What could be so important that I had to dream travel all the way out here to... I looked around to take stock of the space around me, I had awoken on a sofa. There was a fire... the blue fire I had only ever seen on the Colored mountains. The mounds of roses in large white and blue china bowls, it was dimly lit tonight with only the firelight and the round moon peeking in through the high windows. The trees stood outside waving their branches in the winter wind, their white petals fluttering down from their crowns... There was no mistaking it. I was back in Fluffy's family home in the Colored Mountains.

Where the hell was Heller?

Hahaha. Get it?

But seriously, wasn't he supposed to be coming to get Fluffy? He was taking an awfully long time, not that I minded. I felt a little like someone who found a lost puppy, I might not want to return it anymore. BUT STILL...

Fluffy wasn't a lost puppy. He was a wolf. I couldn't be selfish like that. I got up, meaning to look for Heller. If I found him still here, he would have a lot of explaining to do.

I mean, I was a busy Alpha! There was a warlock threat happening and my pack was on Code Orange. The Rogue King had moved in too. And my exams were tomorrow! Did no one care about my exams? They were my exams! EXAMS!

I had NEVER not studied so hard in my life. I mean, I did have my wolf now, but Boo isn't really the academically inclined type, and my gift of insight was very random at best.

But since I was here, I might as well sort this out...

{Intruder!} Someone shouted.

Which was dumb. You're a wolf. Mindlink! Now I know you knew I was here.

Oh wait, I was an intruder?

Two warriors charged into the room, I jumped back, my hair krackening.

{It's the goddess!} The first warrior yelled.

{I don't think so.} His partner skeptically took note of the rest of me.

I was only in my PJs. Tonight, it was an over-sized tie dyed tshirt and white really short shorts under it. Ack! So un-alpha.

Thus the warriors stopped in their tracks looking confused. They looked at my hair, waving in the space above me - Heller had very high ceilings in his home, and then they looked at the rest of me. I think they were trying to figure out what they were looking at.

Finally, the warrior nearest to me reported, aloud again, to someone who wasn't in the room. {There's a girl here, Captain. Awaiting your orders.}

{It could be a trap.} His partner warned.

{I think we scared her.}

{It doesn't make any sense, how did a girl get here?}

{Could she be one of Lady Adelina's friend?}

At this point, I decided to go with the flow. At any rate, I didn't think these warriors were bad guys. Right now they were just a pair of very confused warriors.

"Is Adelina here?" I asked. I tried to relax my hair and gave my best puppy dog eyes.

{See, she's Lady Adelina's friend.}

{I still think its a trap.}

And at this point, I realized neither of the wolves around me were talking aloud. They were on the mindlink, but my gift of insight was never particularly respectful of other people's privacy like that.

"Can you tell her it's Sam, the one with blue hair." I tried again.

Suddenly there was a sound of explosions in the distance.

Someone not in the room was broadcasting over the mindlink, {Code Black! Code Black. I repeat. This is a Code Black! Lock down in 60 seconds. All warriors to station.}

The warriors panicked, {Captain, awaiting your orders!}

But their Captain ignored them.

{Code Black! Code Black. I repeat. This is a Code Black! Lock down in 60 seconds. All warriors to station.} The broadcast repeated.

{What do we do with the girl?}

{You can't take her with us! What if its a trap?}

{I don't care, we can't just leave her here.}

"Girl, come with us." The first warrior decided, aloud this time. As in really aloud. I saw his mouth move and his mustache twitch with the words.

{This is a really bad idea.} His partner warned him, but over the mindlink.

{She's just a pup, can't be older than my own, probably only just shifted this year too.}

{Just-a-pup won't appear in the middle of the night in the Prince's family room the night T&T attacks.}

"What's happening?" I asked.

{Just-a-pup won't have hair like that either.}

Even though, his partner made very good points, the first warrior decided to ignore him, "Don't be afraid, you're safe with us. But you're in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Just as he said this, metal shutters started closing over the windows with a whirring mechanical sound. Whoa... was that house armor? We gotta get some of that for our Alpha House too. Hahaha. I mean, with the rogues, and now the warlock, house armor could come in handy.

"We have to go, or we would be locked in." The warrior worried.

I nodded and followed, even though I couldn't figure out why that would be a dangerous thing. If there was an explosion outside, wouldn't locking yourself in your home be a good idea?

"Can you run, girl?" The warrior asked. We were rushing along the corridors but the lights were going out behind us.

OMG. This was so exciting.

"Yes! I'm a fast runner!" I grinned.

"Good girl." The warrior nodded encouragingly, but he looked serious, "Keep running and don't look back."

I had no idea what was happening, but this was really fun. The warriors broke into a run. I followed, and soon we were out in a ballroom.

But there was no ball tonight, just a lot of warriors gearing up and being busy.

"Manstein! Randolf! Where the hell were you? Who's that?"

"I think she's Lady Adelina's friend, Captain. We found her in Prince Heller's family room." Manstein answered.

Something else exploded. It was really near us this time.

"S***." Captain said, "They're getting closer."

"What do we do with the girl?" Manstein asked.

"Too late. Nothing we can do." Captain shrugged, "It's a Code Black. We're out of time."

Now he turned to me, "Girl, if I were you, I'd run for the trees the first chance I get and get the hell out of here."

And then, because I think the Captain was really a softie inside, he took out a pistol, "Take this. If you get caught, pull down on the trigger here all the way to shoot, then don't stop running till you reach the town."

"Captain, we can't do this. The T&T will kill her." Manstein fretted.

The Captain got mad now, "What else can I do? Sacrifice Prince Heller's mate and our young lady Adelina to save her? THIS IS CODE BLACK."

On the mindlink he ordered, {Everyone, this is it. We're in Code Black. Ready or not, if you have to die, make sure to make the enemy hurt!}

This code black thing sounded pretty desperate.

"Girl, follow us outside, then head into the nearest tree cover and get as far as you can from here." The Captain told me.

And then he gave the order, {Move out!}

It's the last chapter of Volume 7! Yay! Sam's dream continues into Volume 8:

It's exam week, but I've got far greater problems brewing at home. Warlock trouble, the rogue king, Uncle Louis' economical problems... one at a time. Just let me survive Code Black and figure out what's going on at Heller's first, and I'm sure everything else will work out somehow.
