Chapter 2: chapter 2: the streets

"Yo open the door!" pounding on the bathroom stall. "Hey someone's in here hang on." I'm in the bathroom stall of a McDonald's. "Open the door!" A angry voice said again shaking the stall door. "I'm going to the bathroom here jezz hang on."

Ok so I know it's not a good thing to do a shot in the bathroom but when it's this cold outside your veins shrink making it almost impossible to shoot up outside, and I have been freezing outside for so long my hands and feet feel like they are burning as I warm up.

"Just open the door now!" whoever it is says again this time looking over the stall door while trying to force it open. I can see it's not an employee or a cop so I figure it's someone else waiting to use the stall for the same reason. "I'm done give me a sec, damn."

I pack up my stuff and open the door to confront the jerk. Instantly three people rush in and start punching me everywhere. It happens so fast I get hit in the face twice before I can even get my hands up.

"What the fuck!" I'm getting jumped! With my hands up they punch me in the ribs and try to surround me. "Where's the other one? where's your fucking buddy, the one that stole my shit!" One of them yells. I have no idea what that means, but I know if I don't do something I'm going to get the shit beaten out of me. Reaching into my pocket I leave one side exposed and get punched in head again and feel blood running down that side of my face.

Finally I pull my hand out and flip open my knife. Pushing off the wall I stab the first guy the biggest of the three, and the one who was pounding on the stall. "Aaarrggh!" I had stabbed him just above his belt just to the side of his navel. "He's got a knife!" One of them yelled turning around and running out the stall followed by the one I stabbed. Not thinking I chased them to the door realizing the last one is grabbing my backpack off the floor and trying to put it on.

"Drop it!" I tell at him, blocking the door. He swings it back off but instead of dropping it he holds it in front of him and rushes me, just as the first one to run turns around and throws an arm around my neck trying to choke me out. The one with my bag runs past and I use the momentum from his push to slam the guy choking me against the wall. When he didn't let go I slashed his arm with the knife.

"Aaahhh, o my god you cut me, you son of a bitch!" he screamed as he ran away, strait out the door and out of the restaurant. Still stunned by how fast everything happened and in pain I sank to the ground.

Trying to straighten everything out in my head I stumbled out of the bathroom after putting away my knife, just as the cops come thru the restaurant doors and order me to freeze, guns drawn and pointed at me.

"Don't move!" yelled one, as the other ordered "Get down on the ground!" Exhausted and as the adrenaline was wearing off the pain was kicking in, I fall forward on my chest hands outstretched in front of me.

As they pile on top of me the manager having heard what was happening from someone tells them "No, he was attacked, look he's bleeding!"

They clime off me and pick me up. "What happened? Who did it? Was it them?" Looking where they are pointing I see another officer talking to two of the guys outside, neither has my bag. Angry but knowing that if I rat them out things on the streets will only get worse for me, I say "No, it was someone else." "What did he look like then?" I can tell they know I'm lieing, but they also know I won't say anything. "It happened too fast, I didn't get a look at their face." I say not being able to meet their eyes. "Like that huh? I guess your fine too then, good no paperwork."

Just like that they leave telling the cop outside to let them go, there leaving. The two outside look at me threw the window for a second then run off. I grad some napkins from the dispenser and press them to my bleeding head. "Get out! and never come back in here!" the manger who had helped me screams in my face like it was all my fault. I start walking out but I guess I wasn't moving fast enough because at the door he shoves me out and to the ground. The cops still in the parking lot see this but don't react.

The bleeding has stopped but the pain in my ribs has turned into a red hot poker of agony. Shuffling to the closest store I ask to use the phone to call an ambulance. "No, customers can't use the phone." "Ok can you call an ambulance for me then?" I ask. Then he sees bloody footprints and freaks out. "I just mopped, get out! Get out now or I'm calling the police! Get out!"

Picturing the cops that just left me being pissed to get called again and searching me, I quickly leave. In pain and probably concussed I slowly walk back to my tent in an abandoned burnt out building. Getting there I use the last of the drugs I have and let myself pass out, not caring if I overdose and die. I'm kind of hoping I do.

I wake up the next morning to so much pain all I can do is groan and cry for what feels like forever. Somehow I get back to the road where the bus stop is and beg the driver to let me ride to the hospital. "Call an ambulance kid, I'm not losing my job over you." and closes the door driving away.

Without a better option I walk the ten blocks to the ER. After waiting hours they bring me in and the doctor orders an x-ray. I wait in the private room noticing that for some reason there are no cabinets, no monitors nothing but the bed itself. After a while a new doctor comes in not the x-ray doc that I had seen before. Looking the x-ray for a split second without even putting it against the light she opens the file reads something and says, "the ribs are fine and because of your history I can only give you some Tylenol." and hands me a cup with two pills and another with a little water. "sign here and these gentleman will show you out." as two security guards come in. She leaves before I can say anything and from the disgusted looks from the guards I know I won't get any help. That's just how all hospitals treat junkies.
