Chapter 5: Chapter 5

"Aw, come on, just take one. I swear they're perfectly fine," Tonpa pleaded. I shook my head for the 10th time. "No thanks, Tonpa-san. I'm not thirsty." I also have an eerie feeling about those drinks, and my instincts are usually on point.

There were around 80 applicants here now. I've been here for almost an hour. I also didn't have any possessions, so as you can guess, I was incredibly bored. All I could do was wonder how I'd gotten here in the first place and look at the crowd of applicants.

I'd been sitting against the sewer-cave wall (still trying to remember something about this so called hunter exam) when a rather fat man in blue with the badge number 16 had come up to me. He'd introduced himself as Tonpa, and looked pretty proud for someone who'd failed the hunter exam 34 times now. Even his face looked familiar to me.

He'd provided information about some of the applicants I'd been wondering about. I'd also realized that there were no kids here (or anyone who even looked below 20) in the crowd. It make me stand out a bit, and people kept glancing at me and whispering to each other.

Now, as a "toast to friendship," Tonpa was trying to make me drink this orange juice stuff. He was trying so hard, it made me suspicious. There was also a tug in my gut I was feeling- and it was telling me not to trust him.

"Are you sure? You might get thirsty later on. Just take one, please?" he practically begged while holding out one of the cans to me. I sighed heavily as my patience finally snapped. I sent him a death glare. The temperature seemed to drop by 20 degrees. "Sorry Tonpa, but you're kinda pissing me off now. I don't want your drinks. Please leave."

He was shaking so much, it was hard not to burst out laughing. Without a word, he shoved the can back into his satchel and scurried off. The people around me grew wary and stepped back a bit.

I fought the urge to grin as I turned back around. Am I really that intimidating? Me, a (technically) little 12 year old girl? In the corner of my eye, I could see the same creepy clown (Tonpa told me his name was Hisoka) grinning at me, flicking a group of cards in his hand. Ew. I frowned and walked away, as far away as I could get from him.

I surveyed the crowd of applicants again. Let's see... around 90 people now, maybe? Or 100?

I heard the elevator ding behind me again. Great, another person to keep a profile of for possible future needs. Some of the applicants turned around to see the newcomer, including me. The rest of them (who were apparently uninterested) kept on chatting quietly or doing their own thing.

Now let's see who-

My stomach felt like it had dropped. Time seemed to be frozen. No. It can't be. Why...

Or rather... how?
