Chapter 23: Gluttony, Gold, and Greed...

Veru had a glum face. He after smashing the fruit that he plucked from the tree, found a red bead.

It looked something unusual; it was red- and its size was that of a berry.

Veru in spite of successfully breaking the outer covering was saddened for he not only wanted to break the shell but also was hungry.

Hardly the berry could fill his hunger, and it gave a strong rancid odor which was enough to make him throw.

Holding himself up, he managed to calm down his body and threw the berry to all his might, venting his anger and frustration over it.

'What Hina told me was right. This is no fruit that tastes good, but a fruit even I won't eat even when I am starving'

Veru who looked at the tall trees with beaming eyes, now looked or rather glared them with disdain and disgust. He could no longer feel the shinny fruits hanging over him, mouth-watering.

Grumble…

He held his stomach which was running wild. Veru was angry, and his emotion made him hungrier.

Veru got up, went to the pool, and drank water to temporarily quench his hunger with water. He dusted his clothes and once again left deep into the forest.

Chatter…

The chattering sound of inserts was clear and distinctive. He could hear them with no difficulty.

The forest looked much like the previous day, nothing changed except for the temperature; the forest was a bit colder with moisture filling up the air, making the weather humid.

Though sunlight couldn't easily permeate through the thick canopy made by the soaring high trees, Veru was still able to see the different sizes and varieties of trees.

Veru since the beginning was well versed in trekking and climbing. It wasn't because he went into someplace similar to a camp, but rather he and Hose along with others used to go through the forest near the shore in order to smuggle the goods.

Veru looked at the shoes he yanked off the supposedly dead body of Klyne.

'They are so comfortable.'

Despite Veru being much younger than Klyne, he was able to wear the shoes. It was because he put the cloth he tore from Klyne's coat into it.

Veru looked at the sky, or rather the green covering which rarely let him see the zenith. 'It must be early morning.'

Veru could neither see the sun, nor the sky, but he was able to guess the time. The fresh smell of dew stimulated his sharp senses that would be present in the early morning.

Very continued to trek through the forest, taking rest in between and continuously searching for any edibles, which he could hardly find.

Grumble…

His stomach made the same sound thrice as he held it and crouched down a bit. His body was a little sweaty and itchy due to the humidity, with his throat running wildly parched. While at the pool, he drank to his heart's content, but he couldn't find any container to hold the water of the pool, leading him to his current condition.

Luckily, since the sun was hidden behind the thick cover, the loss of water decreased dramatically.

The tiny beads of perspiration that did appear on his forehead, remained there and didn't fall until he wiped them by himself. The green hair was partly wet too, especially near his side hair.

Taking a short rest and resting for a moment, he ventured deeper while the other crewmates were still fighting themselves.

Thime followed the grim man along with the others and reached an area similar to were Veru quenched his thirst and also plucked the golden fruit.

Thime's eyes widened as he looked at the scenery.

It was a paradise.

Tall trees, long branches filled with golden yellow leaves, and silver-gold fruits, lustrous enough to reflect the little sunlight that peeped through the thick canopy.

The fruits refracted and sparkled as a diamond would, and emitted a strong alluring fragrance that stimulated their taste buds, as puddles of drools formed inside of their mouths.

Wiping the drool, the group looked at the fruits with eyes, filled with different emotions, but the majority of them had just a single emotion.

Greed.

They were scientists and crew members, who lived two different worlds but yet desired for the fruit.

For the crew, it was the mysterious fruit found in myths, while for the scientists it was an unknown fruit, that was hidden from the world, and radiated a bright light, defying the general sense.

The description of the fruit could be described as the fruit Hercules took from the gold in his journey, where he met Atlas.

The only difference here was the fruits resembled more like a peach than an apple.

The gazes filled with greed locked onto the fruits as they went closer towards the tree- with blind eyes.
