Chapter 258: 29

Amplify their spells. I could feel my mana drain while the effects of Jax's spell suddenly became twice as devastating as it was a few seconds ago. The rift collapsed, and it was time to move on to the fourth stable rift. I didn't see this one on the island so it had to be somewhere off the island. I flew towards the spatial disturbance I felt, and ended up over the water.

I tried to focus my spatial element on the portal, but it was too far away. I looked back at my bonded as they clung to my back. It was under the water. I couldn't bring them with for this part. For one I didn't know how long I could hold my breath.

For two I could bring them under the waves with a bubble of air because of the risk of it popping. That bad feeling hadn't gone away yet so I really didn't want to bring them underwater. None of them had an affinity with water so they couldn't even fight back if I did bring them with me. I flew back to the village, and dropped them off.

"What are you doing?" Ethan asked.

"You can't breathe underwater," I jumped out of Ethan's reach so he couldn't jump back on me, "That rift under the water is stronger then the others. I'll have to swim down to it to get within range of the portal."

"You can't go by yourself," Ethan tried to stop me with his telekinesis.

I broke his control over me with a snap of my tail. He couldn't hold me down when he was already exhausted. I flew for the water, and dove in. Using my wings to fight the buoyancy of my light body. I felt that I could hold my breath really well when I made it to the portal that was on the sea floor.

I had to fight against the water to stay down here, but I was glad to see there weren't any beasts around the portal at least. The portal was truthfully massive. I think a city bus could pass through it going sideways. That bad feeling made me think my initial relief about the portal not having beasts around it turn to fear. Something almost always came through these portals.

Sometimes it was big groups like the other portals had been. Sometimes it was only a few individual beasts, but I had never seen a rift form that stayed open for any amount of time without something coming through. I started working on closing the rift with my space element. How long do I need system?

48 minutes 17 seconds.

Put the countdown in the corner of my vision. The countdown appeared in the corner of my vision just like I requested. I felt a disturbance in the water before something massive bit a chunk out of my wing as it raced past me from behind. I snapped at it, and my teeth barely scratched its thick hide as I was thrown away from it like a ragdoll. It turned swam away from me before making a wide turn so it could set it's big black eyes on me.

It looked a Mosasaur only with a third set of powerful fins to push it through the water. It was twice the size of me easy, and we were in it's element. I'd just pissed off a creature that could be my death. This thing had to have been swimming around the island this whole time. It swam at me with speed. It wasn't too fast for me to track, but I hadn't exactly done a lot of underwater fighting, and I didn't know how long my air would last.

I flapped what was left of my two wings down hard, and was thrown up, and clear of its teeth. I electrified the water with my mana. The beast froze up in the water. I let the lightning dwindle quickly. I couldn't keep this kind of thing up for long.

Not underwater. I couldn't breath here so I couldn't gain more mana. Not quickly. I needed something to even the playing field. I needed to stay within two hundred feet of the rift to close it up.

I'd didn't want to abandon such a large portal down here. Once the beast left, more like it might come through. If that happened the whole world could suffer. Not just this little island refuge. The beast started shaking the effect of my lightning off, and pushing itself forward through the water as it studied me slowly.

It circled the whole area we were in slowly as I kept my own eyes on it ready to dodge if I needed to as I struggled to keep myself under the water. I needed a form more dense than my current one. One that would sink instead of floating. I wasn't used to another body though so it would need to be something similar to the form I had now. I would need to take a hybrid form.

The question was a hybrid form of what. Another smaller beast swam through the portal. It didn't seem to notice the large beast off behind me as it swam straight for me with its mouth open. Its teeth showing. It reminded me of a sea turtle crossed with a great white.

I bit down on it as soon as it got close enough for me to reach it. It wanted to eat me, but ended up getting eaten instead. Adding the creature to the plethora of things I could turn into. I closed my eyes for a second, and pictured what I wanted clearly. A form that was almost exactly like the one I had now.

Smaller. More compact, but my tail was more fin like. My fingers, and toes longer, and webbed. My wings smaller, and ribbed better for swimming. I wouldn't get exactly what I wanted because there was only so much my form could merge with another.
