Chapter 330: 24

They were here for me? The fact that I could understand him had made me draw my head back, and cock it slightly. I didn't think that they would understand English, but I wasn't certain I could just speak a language I'd never spoken before simply because I could understand it. My tail flicked slowly as I thought over what I was going to do next. I didn't think they'd noticed Ethan yet.

Ethan grabbed the spines on the back of my neck, and started climbing while I was still deep in thought.

"Young lord," he stepped forward slowly, "We need to leave before those creatures come for you."

I could tell when they spotted Ethan. They all tensed simultaneously. The one with the spear readied it with the intent to attack. The sudden surge of hostility targeting Ethan was more then enough to send me into a rage. Lightning ran down my scales, and across the membranes of my wings.

Sending shockwaves of pain through my damaged core.

"Touch him, and I'll kill all of you," I snarled back at them in their language.

My sudden rage caught them off guard.

"He's mine," I stepped toward the one that had spoken to me first, "You will not touch any of them. They are under my protection."

I'd added the second part on a hunch. They seemed to be focused on making a good impression or protecting me. I had no clue why they were so focused on me or why they wanted me to come with them. The fact that they referred to me as a lord bothered me as well. I didn't know what they wanted, but if they truthfully were on my side I might be able to convince them to help us with our little spider problem.

It wouldn't stay just our problem for long. It was going to spread. That was what the spiders did. They kept building up their nest bigger, and bigger until they ran out of planet to consume. I was glad I'd managed to speak their language.

User is incorrect. The language that the lizardmen are currently speaking is ancient draconic. The language of the dragons.

I'd managed to speak my own language? Wait. If they're speaking the language of the dragons then who taught it to them? Time to take a little ownership.

"Where did you learn to speak my language?" I asked in draconic.

"The ancient one taught us," he replied while still clearly on guard.

Aurora's wing beats drew my attention upward as she hovered over the exchange. I refocused on the lizardman in front of me.

"Come back in the morning," I leaned down close to him so there was no chance of him mishearing me, "Then we can all discuss this properly. I'll even allow you to examine me. Just to prove that I'm not some slave these humans are controlling."

"That can be arranged," the lizardmen nodded slowly, "We do wish for you to come meet our priestess," he glanced at Ethan, "Without the influence of these creatures."

"That can be arranged," I responded in draconic.

I didn't know how to sound sarcastic in draconic. You needed to speak a language to sound sarcastic when using it. They backed down. Disappearing into the grass like scaley phantoms. I could see that the vast majority of them just receded into the deep grass.

The blue scales of their backs made them blend into the odd grass almost perfectly. I could only see them when I was looking directly at them. Aurora landed next to me calmly.

"What did they want?" she looked up at me curiously, "And how did they learn our language?"

"They thought we were being held here against our will," I smirked. k

"They're not very smart," she scoffed, "Thinking that these weaklings could stop you from flying away."

"How did you know it was our language?" I looked down at her.

"I've known it since I was old enough to think properly," she stared out into the grass at the same spot I'd just been looking at.

"Innate knowledge?" I nodded slowly, "Interesting."

"Weren't you born with the same knowledge?" she looked at me with her head cocked.

"I wasn't born the same way you were," I was expecting another question.

"All dragons hatch," she stared at me expectantly, "How could you have been born differently?"

"Ask Goliath," I smirked, "He'll tell you if he thinks you're ready to know."

She practically sprinted back toward Goliath after that. I knew she'd do that since she still had a childish mentality. I watched the lizardmen for a few more minutes cautiously. Making sure they knew that I could still see them. I figured it wouldn't hurt.

Might discourage them from trying anything while I was still around. I walked back into the settlement to find them still in an uproar. They were on high alert. Ready for an attack. If the lizardmen kept their word then they wouldn't attack.

I needed to go discuss it with Calen. Ethan sat on my horns calmly as I walked through the settlement calmly. Heading toward his office with purpose in my steps. I had to tell him what I'd found out so he didn't send his men chasing after them. The lizardman I'd clashed with was strong enough to push me back.

Calen's men wouldn't stand a chance in a fight. There were already over a dozen men reporting details on what they'd seen outside the walls including me communicating with the lizardmen. A path opened up for me as I got closer, and closer. People didn't like me all that much, and still thought of me as a threat. I laid down in the street, and waited.

I wouldn't have to wait forever. Eventually Calen would come to me. I just had to be patient, and behave myself in the meantime. I already had a bad reputation for deceiving the people here. I didn't want to add to it.
