Chapter 8: Best friends.

"Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition, and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty. I’m so sick of people saying that love is all a woman is fit for. "

~JO MARCH

The last bell rang indicating that, the school was over. Students were getting out of their seats and rushed towards the door.

I waited for the crowd to be less and slowly packed my bag. The moment I stood up, I met with someone’s chest, looking up, I saw a very tall, golden-brown haired boy with dark brown eyes grinning down at me, revealing his one-sided dimple. He was cute.

‘’We are going to end up together!’’ He squealed like a child.

‘’What?’’ I chuckled and asked him.

‘’This is how couples in movies meet!’’ He exclaimed grinning like a maniac and I raised my right eyebrow.

He huffed and replied,

“In movies the male and female lead meet like this, accidentally crossing paths, like us!’’ he exclaimed again showing his white pearled teeth.

Rolling my eyes, I replied, ‘’exactly, in movies’’ emphasizing movies.

He rolls his eyes on this,

‘’No you’re my soul mate, I know!!’’ he replied stomping his feet on the ground, making me laugh. His eyes sparkled when he heard me laugh.

‘’See only a soul mate can make their soul mate laugh like that’’ he said while grinning.

‘’Sure’’ I reply with a soft smile.

‘’That means you are accepting me!?’’ he widely smiled.

‘’No’’ I replied with a smile and rolled my eyes.

‘’So?’’

‘’We can be friends’’ I replied clasping both of my hands.

‘’Best friends?” He asked nervously fidgeting his fingers. How can I say no to that?

‘’Best friends’’ I replied softly with a smile.

‘’She said yes!! She said yes!!’’ he started shouting in the empty room making me laugh and shake my head at his childish behavior.

Before I could comprehend what’s happening he jumped and hugged me tightly. I couldn’t think properly, my breathing became ragged, the only thing going in my mind was, someone was touching me, someone was TOUCHING me

I pushed him backward and started breathing heavily. When my breathing rate was normal, I glanced at him and he was already looking at me with a guilty look. I knew it, why can’t I just hug people normally other than scaring them away?

“I am so sorry, are you alright?’’ he asked softly. He took a step ahead and then shaking his head took a step backward.

‘’It’s not your fault. Please don’t be guilty!’’ I replied softly and he nodded with a small smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

‘’I like to have personal space and I don’t…I don’t like people touching me’’ I replied softly looking down at my feet, it is just so hard to be so strong every single time and not cry, it is just so hard to push people away as if they were a disease. After years I have tried to make a friend and this is what happens.

‘’Okay deal!’’ he replies enthusiastically with a thumbs up and a large smile. Catching me off-guard.

‘’You still…you still want to be my friend’’ I asked whispering ‘Friend’.

‘’Best friend’’ He playfully glared and added, ‘’yeah, why not? If my best friend is facing a problem I am supposed to be there for her, not leave her, right?’’

‘’Right,’’ I whispered slightly nodding with a soft smile, my eyes glistening.

‘’Now best-friend what is your name? Wait I just noticed! We will be the first-ever best friends who became best friends without knowing each other’s names!’’ He exclaimed, and ladies and gentlemen he’s back to being himself.

‘’Forced you mean?’’ I asked with a smirk and he rolled his eyes.

‘’You know most girls would be glad to be in your position?’’ he asked back with a smirk.

‘’Yes, but I am not most girls’’ I replied.

‘’Yes you aren’t, you are my best friend!!’’ he shouted and I laughed, again.

‘’Katherine Williams’’ I state with a large smile.

‘’James Havard’’ He states proudly, puffing his chests. God, he’s such a kid.

‘’Well, best friend see you later, I have a detention to attend’’ I say.

‘’Wait, I do too’’ he replied, and then with a frown, he added, ‘’why do you have?’’

‘’Long story short. I forgot to bring my books’’ I reply with a sigh.

‘’Yeah, I assumed it would be something like that’’ he replies with a laugh and I glared at him.

James and I walked towards the detention hall, I didn’t know where it was, as it was my first time so, it was good for me that he was leading the way.

On the way, we talked, laughed when he started muttering his jokes, and got to know each other more. By talking to James I felt like I went back to my childhood, no problems, no sorrows, and all happiness.

It’s weird because normally I don’t blend in with people, the only people I blended in like this was with Emily and Cyrus. It’s weird, I just met James and we connected, he is like a ball of sunshine, it’s like he emits happiness. After the hug, he didn’t pry to know why I did that, he understood if I wanted to tell him I would have.

After a long ten minutes’ walk, we stood in front of a very familiar large two- doored door. It was the library.

‘’I didn’t know they held detentions in the library’’ I told looking up at James.

‘’It’s like the most boring place on earth, why would they not held detentions here?’’ he muttered and I rolled my eyes. He strolled in and held the door for me to enter.

‘’Such a gentleman’’ I teased and he rolled his eyes, leading the way.

What I didn’t know was that he would lead us to the largest table in the library where all the jocks were sitting. I wanted to just slowly turn my legs in the other direction but! But! My new best friend had to ruin my plan. I don’t know how all of my best friends manage to get on my nerves.

‘’Guys!’’ James shouted getting all of their attention. Each and every eye on the table were on us.

‘’This is my new best friend!’’ James exclaimed and grinned at them. Now all the eyes were solely on me. Some held bored expression while some were just staring. I found two familiar faces, one was Jace, the guy who asked me if I was fine when the ball hit me while the other one was the face I would rather much not see, the blue-eyed devil. Jace held a genuine smile and nodded his head acknowledging me while Christian stared at me intensely as if trying to figure out something. When he saw me looking at him, he shot glares at me. Typical.

‘’Finally!’’ someone sighed and James glared at him. I guess there’s more story to that and I will ask him later about it.

‘’Won’t you introduce your little best friend, Jamey?’’ Christian asked with a smirk looking in my direction making me glare at him.

‘’Yeah James, introduce us to her as well’’ Another boy, with pierced ears and tattoos covering his fingers asked with a sly smirk, he had a strong accent. I noticed Christian clench jaws and look down.

‘’Back off, Maver!’’ James replied venomously taking a protective stance in front of me, he added, ‘’I don’t want anyone of you to play games with her, she’s my best friend, don’t drag her in your dirty games, you have thousands of other options. And if you cannot respect her, forget that I ever introduced you guys’’ James told sternly. I thought he couldn’t be angry, guess I was wrong.

‘’Man, we are just asking you to introduce her to us’’ Maver replied with a sly smirk.

‘’Maver, enough!’’ Jace said sternly, looking at James he told,

‘’We will respect her James don’t worry, your friends are our friends as well’’ as he finished and Maver scoffed, what is this guy’s problem?

I noticed while the whole interaction Christian was eerily calm and quiet. I thought he would be the one riling me up.

James glared at Maver and looked down at me with pity, ‘’I am so sorry for his behavior’’ he replied and I shook my head, ‘’no it’s not a problem’’ I assured him with a soft smile.

‘’We can seat at another table if you want’’ he told but I declined, as much as I wanted to seat at another table, I didn’t want him to be away from his friends for me. I can tell he didn’t expect this kind of behavior from them.

‘’I am sorry’’ Maver muttered and everyone widened their eyes, including James. Guess he doesn’t always apologize. Everyone looked in my direction including Maver himself.

‘’it’s…it’s fine’’ I stuttered, the number of eyes on me was making me nervous. Maver didn’t say anything else and James was back to holding his large smile.

‘’Okay then’’ James said, enthusiastically clasping both of his hands.

‘’This is Katherine Williams’’ He introduced me with a large smile plastered on his face, ‘’and they are all of my normal friends’’ he replied looking at me, nonchalantly and shrugging it off. I chuckled and all of them shot glares at him.

‘’Introduce us properly’’ someone grumbled making James roll his eyes.

‘’You guys can introduce yourselves’’ he shrugged and sat an empty seat, motioning me to sit at the empty chair beside him which was just to my luck beside Maver.

The boys were friendly and funny, they were sharing their hilarious prank stories making me burst out in laughter. They introduced themselves and I can safely say, that I messed up what their names were. Yeah, I am very bad with names.

I noticed Christian and Maver genuinely smiling at their friends when they were sharing the stories. And except both of them, all of the others conversed with me.

I ignored the intense stare of Christian, who was sitting across me, and the side glances that Maver was shooting.

When the librarian came to mark the names the boys started irritating the librarian making him shoot murderous glares at each and every one of them. After he left, the table burst out in laughter.

One thing that I noticed in the boys is that they loved each other a lot.

No matter how much James told that they were his ‘normal friends’, by looking at the adorable smile on his face you could tell he loved them a lot as well.

One thing I observed today was, you never really need to express your love for someone; they can feel it automatically.
