Chapter 4: What You Are

"You have legs...." I starred at his legs.

I look up to him, only to see him laughing now.

My forehead knitted, "What's funny?"

"Well, you're acting like a stupid fish. Ha, hahah" he said not even hiding his rudeness.

'What the waves is his problem?'

"Are you---" He stopped me before I could even finish talking, again, with his irritating laughter.

'I never knew laughter could sound so annoying.' I voiced internally.

"HAHAHAH! 'Are you a human? Surely, you're not gonna ask me that next, right?" He grinned but I stayed silent and started swimming nearer the rowing boat.

"So, are you?"

"Tsk, what a cliche meeting this is." He mumble while starring at me, but with an amusing smile.

He crouch as he straightened his face to face me, so seriously that it brought me chills down from my fins to the strands of my hair.

"Don't compare me to those powerless humans, dear sister. Or I might just cast a spell on you." He says coolly but his tone sounding masked--offended.

'Cast a spell? What the hell is he...'

"Try and we shall see who is weaker on a full moon. Merfolk's or wizards...." Aspen ascended from underwater, he glided to my side...

Sai evidently rolled his eyes, "Cut the crap Aspen. You know I hate heroic trashes."

"Well, you've always prefer the suicidal types..." Says Aspen.

Sai then turned to me and smiled playfully. I heard Aspen heave a sigh, wait..."You knew each other?!" I asked exasperatedly.

Sai shrugged, "Obviously, idiot".

Oh yeah, obviously.

And I have no idea what on ocean's floor is happening.

Many things came to mind. Things were a little fast, and complicated. How do I even take in all of these. 'As far as I know, I am a sole child of a humble coral abode merman father. But the next thing I know, I am looking at someone who looks exactly like me. And that person is claiming to be my twin brother.'

I blankly felt vague. Although, the longer I stare, the more annoyed I become. He looks majestic meanwhile we were twins and I look like a dried seaweed.

Aspen didn't even bother explaining to me. He and Sai calmly bumped fists.

"Happy Birthday." He silently greeted Sai.

Sai smiled at him and demanded a present. "Where's my gift?"

Aspen ignored him until Sai resigned, "What a cheapskate."

Sai then focused his attention back to me. He opened his mouth to say something but halt for a moment.

'There goes that twisted smile again.'

"...Feeling vague are you? Go on ask me your questions. I'll try to answer the forbidden ones HAHAHAH" he laughed like maniac as ifsomething was really hysterical and Aspen was just there leaning over the boat with his arms crossed together.

Whenever my eyes lands on my said twin brother, I can't help but feel like I'm meeting an insane boy.

"How did we become twins?"

His brows knitted, "Are you kidding me, are you actually stupid? Do I need to start lecturing you about sex now?" he asked unbelieving me.

'He's making me really pissed off.' I clenched the railing of the boat.

"I mean how on this world did that happen?! I don't remember having a brother..."

My thoughts were flooding me and why didn't my father tell me anything about all these? Or is this staged?

I glared at him. No, he looks far too similar to lie on my face. But that's not the only criteria.

"Twin brother. I'm not inferior to you", he corrected.

He combed his long hair with his fingertips. He is slender and petite for a guy.

He looks weak but something in his vibrant eyes tells me that he is something greater and melancholy than any other.

His blue eyes reminds me of the blue waves and soulful skies and...My eyeballs bulged , I pointed my finger at him, "You have the same eyes as my father!" I exclaimed.

He exploded into a big applause, "Wow! Congratulations! You realized!" He exclaimed.

My eyes formed into slits. How could he be so paradoxical?! Aaarrg!

"Woah chill Sis! Pfft... I'm really happy to meet you. It's just that..." He hesitated, so I urged him slapping the ocean water, creating ripples.

Splashhh...

"Just that? What?" I said losing my patience.

Such a suspense! And such a brat. We are nothing alike but appearances.

"Just that I didn't expect you to be this...dumb?"

He motioned his hands in the air writing words that are invisible.

"I'm thoroughly excited to finally see you again after so many darn years, sister. But to think that my expectations would so much befall into a mermaid like you... " he shook his hair and dramatically face-palmed himself; First to his head towards his chin while dragging his elegant fingers.

I'm envious though.

If we really are twins, we're of the same blood! Same genes! Same parents!

'For Ursula's sake! We are twins!'

This really keeps on bothering me but, why does he look gorgeous with that black hair? And why do I look like dried seaweed in red hair? LIFE IS NOT FAIR.

"Correction–I'm not dumb." I corrected trying to keep my crumbling dignity and pride together.

"She's really intelligent. Her water skills are amazing, specially when she goes 'submerge'." Aspen defended me. At the very least, Aspen supported my untrustworthy claim.

"Submerge?" Sai raised an eyebrow and asked curiously.

"It's the same with you and beast people, basically like everyone else when you berserk. You transform like mad with overflowing power. Physical and power change erratically into a whole different being because of your berserk state. For mermaids, we call it submerge." Aspen explained.

Submerge. True to its name, we can only do submerge when are surrounded by our affinity. As mermaids, we are attributed to water, hence we can only berserk or submerge in water.

I saw Sai in my peripheral view, he was nodding to himself, indulge in his own fantasies.

Without anyone of us noticing it, the boat was already rowing by itself.

We tried to swim after the boat. I still have a lot of questions.

'Who is Sai? What is he? What am I?'

"Sai! Sai!" I called out. He tapped the boat and it stopped. Seemingly broken out of his trance.

He glanced at me, his electric blue eyes were boring to mine.

"Spill." He said monotonously which brought me back to the world.

Oh yeah, "what am I?" I asked.

The night was silent, only the sea's roaring waves were the music that covered us; While the moon lit the three of us under its borrowed light, and stars silently watching over us.

But contrary to the answer I was hoping, he answered me with a question.

"Do you want to go over?" Sai inquired, then shifted his head to the island ahead.

It was almost engulfed by darkness if it wasn't for the gold dots of light proving life on that empty island. It was beautiful and enchanting.

The darkness was almost swallowing all of the space and matter, while the golden lights of faraway houses were pouring lights against the lark of that Island in the middle of the sea. 'Was that Island always there?'

I found it strange to see an Island in a place that used to be desolately dark.

"Sai." Aspen warned.

They were now exchanging looks, Aspen glaring over Sai critically.

"Why not?" Sai said back, quite confidently.

"C-can I really?" I implore. Did I sounded too hopeful. I sure hope I didn't.

"Sure." He smiled sadistically, "Well just bend some rules and that's it."

He Sounded too enthusiastic that the weight of his words seem to vanish.

"It's a free island that no one governs. Besides, she can be anywhere in both worlds." he faintly stated.

He reached his hand to me, and when I accepted it, his other hand covered the back of my hand. It felt cold.

"KEYRA ALAZAR!" He chanted.

Violet aura slipped through his body. A streak of beautiful aurora spur out of thin air. Distortions between the tides suddenly went violent and the tidal waves struck me with such force. It was the first time that I felt strange. The wind suddenly went vicious—it was dreadful and unfathomable. As if by some crazy enchantment the wind and sea became one with each element. Cold and no longer the placid sky nor sea.

I found Sai's eyes in the midst of warring waves but I was taken aback when his blue eyes were now blemished with violet-like embers, beautiful and magical. He was chanting words that I wasn't able to take in and understand because my body was embraced with heat, albeit the windstorm. All I felt was the strange uncomfortable fire storm in my chest coming from the hand Sai is holding. And by then, Sai stopped and his eyes brought forth his electric blue eyes.

And when I had come to my senses, the sea was a foreign space to me, slowly drowning me.

The waters that I thought my elixir of life became my unforgiving foe, dragging me to its depth, drowning me to my death.

My fins below me divided into two, as my scales transformed into flesh and skin.

I helplessly moved my newly formed legs but still, I couldn't swim. The feet that I have were not familiar, almost like a borrowed item I'm afraid to use.

My gills vanished to thick waters. I'm no longer a mermaid.

Bubbles...water...air...I couldn't breath, I was dying.
