Chapter 2: Friends

POV: Lydia

I knew the movies were going to be packed tonight. It was the first showing after all. Yet, as my friend Kelly and I walked up to the theater, our hearts somersault into our throats. The line was massive! It stretched to the supermarket five hundred meters away and coiled twice around the parking lot. My nerves tensed as I tried to keep my composure by tapping a finger against my leg in an attempt to stifle the nervous blue energy from slipping through my palms.

"Lydia?" I turned around at the sudden sound of my name to see Kelly looking down, one arm holding the other. "I'm not so sure about this."

The panic in her voice was genuine, but the reasoning for it was still unclear to me. I gently placed a hand on my best friend's shoulder, another one of her bouts of worrying setting in. I got a lot of smack talk sometimes for being friends with a freshman, but more for ignoring most social obligations to huddle away with my notes. It seemed like a small price to pay for being with someone who did more than put up with me. Out of all the people I have meet at this stupid college she is the only one who doesn't consider my "abilities" to be freaky. Or really who knows they exist at all. Let's just say I passed twelfth grade calculous in fifth grade because I was bored and competed in college sports as a ninth grader. Some people called it genius, I called it easy and Kelly, she calls it cheating.

"Sure, it may take a long time, but we'll get in to see the movie. Don't worry. It will only take us two hours fifteen minutes and thirty-two seconds to get in so don't worry." Crap I did it again. I attempted to send her a smile but continued tapped my finger nervously. Standing around and doing nothing was not exactly how I planned this to be.

"Shouldn't we be studying or something? I mean, we have that test later..." I raised an eyebrow at this. Normally, I'm the one saying this sort of thing, when did she become so studious?

"Kelly, you're starting to scare me, freshie. What's the matter?" A quick and unmistakable shiver went down my back and Kelly make's a quick gesture to a group of people standing in the line ahead of us. Blue energy began to pulse uncontrollably from my fingers and I shoved my hands into my pockets.

"That's what I mean," She moaned.

Standing not even fifteen feet away from us was Jared Thompson, her ex-boyfriend. Oh joy. I never fully trusted him; the wavy blond hair and near perfectly toned muscles seemed too good to be true. Although, the fact that he excelled at both every sport he did and his classes did catch my interest. I used to think that he and Kelly had a thing for each other, until they broke up two weeks ago. Kelly made me swear to a vow of silence about it. Now he stands with his right arm around Alena Gerardo, the one person whose only skill is making boys want her. They weren't alone though; they waited boredly with a group of about fifteen other male and female athletes, all buff. One of them seemed to have the exact muscle and brain mass as a bull. I giggle at the thought but receive an elbow in the ribs for it.

"It's not funny! Can we just go already?!" Kelly grabbed me by the arm and began to pull me away.

"Well just wait a bit and see if the line goes faster, he hasn't even noticed that we are here." I whispered as I rubbed her arm.

"You sure?"

Nope, I know he sees us. He said as much in his mind with cuss words and an assortment of dirty thoughts. I can literally hear the panic flowing out of my best friend at the thought of having to spend so long in such close proximity to the one person she loathes the most.

"Ok, we can..." I started to say just as a searing heat began to tingle down my spine. I yanked my hand out of hers and glanced back at the group.

Someone walked up to the group and the sight of him knocked the wind out of me. Literally.

"Lydia, come on!" Kelly frantically pulled at my arm, but I was rooted in place as I gasped desperately for air.

At the sound of her yelling, he turned in our direction and I dropped to my knees.
