Chapter 17: Siege Engines

Garhen's walls were not looking good. They trembled, cracked and crumbled from each punch from the barrage. Hours of this had carved into the stone badly. troops above moving about as archers draw their bows and fire dozens of arrows down on the enemy, who took minimum losses as they pushed, too impatient to wait for their siege weapons to crush the walls. Each bandit had a shield and when they saw the archers fire they would crouch, raising shields and locking them if they were near each other withstanding the attack.

Their advancement was slow this way, but that's all fine and good. Very soon they knew the walls would be breached, they didn't care for the gates. Not something they wanted to deal with. Considering its a kill zone surrounded by towers and walls to funnel troops into and fire down on. Screw that, they weren't idiots! Or well they didn't think they were.. Right?

War drums beat in the background at their advance. Lark Standing upon a hill behind his army, smile growing wider until he could go no further. He was at the front until his troops pushed past and he decided sitting atop an exposed platform wasn't a good idea. Not that he was going to move from it. He just had the platform moved back a bit.. To get outside of archer range, it be Idiotic not to, Sometimes glancing to his east. Where flatlands rose into hills, chuckling Lark focused back on his troops and didn't miss an exciting event gladly enough. Trebuchet next to him corked back. Its crew loaded a boulder with effort and a dozen men. There were at least 4 of these siege machines. Therefore at least 50 men around him, just as the lever was pulled and the boulder went up and over being released at high speeds into the skies. He knew.. this was the moment.

THUUM* CRUMBLE*

It smashed into the damaged walls, yet this one didn't break. It continued crashing through the wall and blew out the other side. Crash into wood and stone of an unlucky house. Stopping at the cobbled street debris piled around it. Moments later the wall crumbled any who stood above screaming as they fell into the cascading rumble, an acre of the wall now collapsed and opening a way for bandits. Although not exactly a clean path there was no worry. Because they won't just be breaching through the gap, but the walls themselves. 12 ladders rose us from the sea of troops as if it just finally came to the surface of a lake.

Guardsmen acted accordingly under Adilen's orders. they drew their bowstrings and let loose an unending round of arrows to further slow their enemy. Whilst a detachment of 80 troops broke off and covered the gap. He needed more defenders, so he sent 20 to go gather what militia they could.

Lark rotated his finger at Kieth who nodded, rushing back into their mostly abandoned encampment. Lark knew you needed more than a 1000 to breach the city. Keith knew why he looked east, there was an unlikely alliance between the empire and their forces. They would raid the city and empire forces would raise it to the ground due to it being in their way. This incident would be blamed on bandit armies so it all went under the cart.

At the end of the day they all get paid all fine and dandy for him.

So far the kingdom had not gathered troops to snuff him out yet so it's a win win regardless. The empire was giving them too many issues already!

Somewhere near the middle of the city.

Juk grumbled as another 8 adventures did. Looking down at the city's map. Red, blue and green markers set down, the left side of the city was undead territory. Walls south were under siege, and it seems there are pockets of bandit forces within the city as well. Then there is the Adventurer guild. Another 40 of them downstairs watching the quiet streets.

"This city has gone to hell. so many enemies and factions to deal with. i say we best help the front."

Huorn his friend and brother in arms shook his head disapprovingly. "Im sure they can handle it. What's worrying me are the undead and their leader. Our scouts say they are consuming and raising. Not to mention a militia unit just engaged them a good 20 minutes ago and lost. I say we deal with the main threat within our city. can't have a city without a population ya know. Hell after killing this group then we could rally everyone to push the bandits out and even reinforce the walls!"

That was a rather valid point. But the front was in desperate need of help now. "But if we do and the front falls, what then? We will have to deal with hundreds more enemies!"

Keven stepped up to the arguing pair. "Calm down ya idiots. I say we split our forces, we got strong folks so it will be hard to kill us. I'll take 20 with me and take out the undead or stall them. Whilst the rest of y'all take out those damn bandits. It won't be a hundred but a thousand!"

Hourn protested, but his friend shook his head. "Fine, but take Oren with you"
