Chapter 5: First Adventure

Waves crashed against the boat, swaying it as it drifted endlessly in no specific direction. After three days the boys had run out of clean water despite having used it sparingly. This was three days ago. Deon had food pellets in the hilt of both of his swords. Each pellet had enough nutrients for an adult to not feel hunger for three days.

However, that number was only for a normal adult. Deon took in far more food than other people due to his healing factor. For his wounds and fatigue to heal so quickly, his body would consume large amounts of nutrients all in one go. The pain that he'd go through at times was because of the lack of nutrients. If his body needed more nourishment to heal then the healing wouldn't stop, instead, his power would begin to consume his own body.

The damage, however, was never permanent. After consuming food his body would begin to heal the parts that were previously consumed. Although there was a time when he had gotten to a certain threshold where the hunger pangs began to feel different. As if something inside him had begun to fundamentally change.

Now however there was no risk of hurting from hunger. As time went on, the boys continued to look for any signs of land during the day and sleep during the night. On the seventh morning of their ocean excursion, Deon awoke to a pigeon standing on his nose pecking at his tongue as his mouth hung open. Deon slowly and gently closed his teeth on the bird's beak.

Deon was happy with his catch. As you all know, pigeons taste just like chicken. Before Deon could rouse Rai and tell him about his catch, the bird began to freak out from being caught off guard. As it struggled to free itself it pooped on Deon's forehead. As soon as Deon released it, it began to make its escape. Before it left, however, it had one final gift for Rai.

Rai woke up to the world's worst vanilla milkshake running down his cheek. As he looked at Deon who was frantically cleaning his head and the bird that was frantically flying away, he quickly realized his situation and dove into the water. As he came up disgusted and ready to give Deon an earful, he realized his little brother was staring behind him.

Rai turned to find that they had finally made it back to land. A large island stood in front of them. They hadn't even seen it in the distance the day before but suddenly they were right in front of it. As they raced ashore they realized that they hadn't floated back to their island but to some other strange place. From their point of view, all they could see was a large forest after the beach.

"I guess this is it."

Rai said as they stared at the forest from the beach.

"So… What now?"

Deon said after five minutes of them staring had passed

"...Wanna go check it out?"

Rai asked

"Uhh… no?"

Deon replied. Neither of them was ready to go out of their way into a strange place by themselves. After a while, they looked at each other, sighed, and nodded, finally gathering the will to move. After walking a few steps, Rai turned back and shouted

"Where the hell are you goin?!"

"I-i thought the nod meant we were goin home… no?"

Deon said as he abruptly stopped pushing the boat back out to sea. Rai didn't say anything but rather stood and stared at Deon. After a moment Deon sighed, pulled the boat back up, and followed Rai into the forest.

As they trekked through the forest, they finally stumbled into a small stream. At last! Even if the island was dangerous at least they wouldn't die of dehydration. While they were drinking, something small seemed to jump out of the tree and land on Deon's head. However, neither of the boys noticed anything and so, after refueling and collecting some water they took off again.

Hours later, the boys were still wandering aimlessly through the forest. It had begun to get dark and cold. Since they hadn't found anything in all this time they were preparing to turn in for the night.

"Imma go to the top of the trees and see if I can see a village or anything."

Rai said before he began to launch himself into the brush above them. As Rai got to the top of the highest tree he could find he discovered that there was nothing but trees all around the island. Not knowing what to do he headed back down to let Deon know. As he came down he noticed something lying on Deon's head.

"So what'd you see?"

Deon asked. Instead of telling him about whatever was on his head, Rai decided to keep quiet and see how it'd turn out. Partly because getting out of the forest was more important and partly because he thought it'd be entertaining

"I don't see anything but trees. I don't think anyone else lives here."

Hearing this Deon was disheartened. They decided to build a fire and call it a night. Slowly they both drifted off to sleep on the ground in the middle of the forest.

In the morning, Deon once again woke up to something on his face. However, this time, whatever was on his face was snoring with its tiny humanoid foot hanging over the side of his face. Deon was an incredibly composed person. Instead of freaking out, he simply said

"It's too early for this crap"

And just like that, he went back to sleep. Before long he woke up again. Now whatever - or rather whoever - was laying on his face had changed positions but was still fast asleep. Slowly, Deon dug his toes into the dirt and carefully pulled himself up until he was standing with his knees at a ninety-degree angle. Slowly he raised his upper body while tilting his head so as not to wake up whoever lay on his head.

Out of nowhere, he noticed that Rai was coming down from the trees, about to land directly on his face. Deon raised his arm, catching Rai before he landed on the creature on his face.

"What the hell do you get out of trying to beat the crap out of me every morning? Even at sea, you turned the boat over three different times."

Deon said

"It makes you stronger"

Rai replied as he shrugged and jumped down. As they were talking Deon noticed blood running down his forehead. At first, he thought that perhaps Rai had ended up breaking his skin when he was playing. However, as the blood continued to flow Deon realized that if it was his wound it would've healed by then. As he pulled the little person off his face he realized that it was a small girl with striking red hair. Deon was shocked. Not because it was a girl but rather because of the long open cut over her stomach.

Deon wasted no time. He bit his finger and let a drop of his blood fall into her mouth.

"Poor girl. She already injured and now you givin her aids."

Rai commented

"Shut up asshole. I don't have aids"

Deon replied as they both laughed. As the girl's wound slowly closed, Deon suddenly sat her down and ran over to his swords. Once he got one in hand he shook ten of the three-day food pellets into his hand and swallowed them all at once. For a moment he just stood there.

"You good no-"

Before Rai had finished, Deon suddenly coughed up a large amount of blood. Without hesitation, he shook five more pellets out and swallowed them. He stood there breathing heavily until the girl's wound finally closed. Finally, Deon leaned against the wall and slowly slid down to the ground

If Deon was healing his own wound, he would only need to take in one pellet, maybe two. Healing other people caused his body to almost collapse. He was near passing out when he sat down but slowly he recovered from the strain on his body.

By the time Deon had recovered the girl had already woken up. She seemed to know that Deon was the one who healed her. She quickly crawled back on top of his head and sat down as if she belonged there.

"What's your name?"

Deon asked as he slowly stood up.

"She can't answer that. She's like a fetus or something."

Rai said. Deon and the girl both stared blankly at him.

"You don't know much about babies huh?"

The little girl said.

"My name's Ash"

She said as she hung upside down from Deon's hair into his face. Deon was slightly shocked that she actually could talk.

"I'm Deon and this is my big brother Rai."

Deon said. Ash and Deon both laughed as they attempted to shake hands.

"You don't seem to be from here. What are you doing out in the forest?"

Ash asked as she struggled to climb back on top of Deon's head, kicking him in the eye in the process.

"We're - ow - trying to find a village or something but there doesn't seem to be one on the island."

Deon said

"Oh, there's a barrier around the town. You have to be guided in. I can take you if you want. Just walk that way for now"

Ash said, pointing into the forest

"Awe for real? Right on"

Deon said as they began walking in the direction Ash had pointed. Finally, they'd find civilization again.
