Chapter 2: Ruby & Jaune

As the bullhead landed, students raced off the ramp with friends in tow, excited at arriving at their new school. Caught in the stampede of students, he stumbled along with everyone, hoping he wouldn't trip or worse, fall on someone. Honestly, you'd think this is an amusement park from the way people were acting.

Escaping the crowd, he finally got a look at the famous school. Huntsmen and Huntresses in training could be seen with quite a variety of weaponry. Some held convertible guns, others had swords and daggers, and yet some had unique axes, staffs, and… was that a chainsaw? Each had their sort of theme he shrugged.

Rindel smiled faintly, breaking his usual apathetic face. "I'm finally free," he thought to himself.

Walking towards the entrance, he heard two loud voices off to the side. One of them was familiar. Turning to see what was happening, he recognized the one called Ruby from earlier and another with all snow-white clothing. Ruby was on the floor most likely from falling over some briefcases from the looks of it. The other was standing over her, arguing while shaking copious amounts of volatile dust around.

"Maybe I should help?" he thought to himself. He needed some friends anyways. As he got closer he could make out what the girl was yelling.

"Are you even listening to me? Is any of this sinking in? What do you have to say for yourself?!" the girl reprimanded while jostling the vial of dust.

At that moment, Ruby began to sneeze. Uh oh, that's definitely not good.

Reaching them Rindel began to say, "Uh, hey, can you stop-" Before he could warn them, Ruby sneezed creating an explosion of flame, snowflakes, and electricity that enveloped the girl and him. Soot covered himself and was slightly blinded.

"Unbelievable! This is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about!" the girl said with hands on her hips.

"Uh, sorry to interrupt, but what exactly happened?" Rindel asked, trying to defuse the situation. Ruby and the other girl turned to him as if just realizing he was there.

"This dolt almost damaged my luggage and now nearly blew us off the side of the cliff!"

"I'm sure that was only an accident and it won't happen again. She's probably sorry about that, right?" he said while turning towards Ruby.

"Yeah! I'm really, really sorry! I-I promise I'll make it up to you!" she said hurriedly, hoping to make amends.

The girl huffed in annoyance. "This isn't your ordinary combat school. It's for the prestigious and only the greatest can come here." She sighed then said, "Just make sure you watch where you're going next time."

Ruby shook her head rapidly. "I definitely will! Oh, my name is Ruby Rose! Nice to meet you!"

The white-haired girl glared at her for a moment before saying, "I'm Weiss Schnee, don't ever do that again. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have somewhere else to be." She then walked away in a hurry, carrying her luggage.

So that was Weiss Schnee, heiress to the infamous Schnee Dust Company. The same company that extorts Faunus and treats them as slaves to their own benefit. Quite the interesting person if he said so himself. Also, did they forget about him?

Watching Weiss storm off, Ruby mumbled, "What a great first day," before looking up at me. "Oh, I forgot about you!"

"She really did forget about me," he thought dryly.

Noticing he still had soot on him from earlier, she apologized, "I'm so sorry about that. D-do want to be friends? As you probably heard from earlier, my name is Ruby Rose! Nice to meetcha!"

This girl is almost more socially awkward than he was. No wonder she got reprimanded by Weiss. "Uh, I'm not hurt or anything so I'm fine, and why not. My name is Rindel White," he said while dusting himself off.

"Yes!! My first friend!" she said excitedly to his own amusement.

"Hey, do you know where we're supposed to go?" a voice from behind us said.

Turning around, both of us saw the blonde guy from earlier that nearly threw up on everyone. He silently hoped it wouldn't happen again.

"Aren't you the guy who threw up on the ship?" Ruby said bluntly. Yeah, she was definitely not good with social interactions.

"Hey! I'll have you know that motion sickness is a much more common problem than people think!"

Ruby giggled, "Sure it is vomit boy."

"Oh yeah? What if I called you Crater Face?" he retorted.

Slightly flustered, she replied, "Hey, that was an accident!"

"Well, the name's Jaune Arc. Short, sweet, rolls of the tongue. Ladies love it!"

We both were skeptical at that comment. "Do they really?" Rindel said blandly.

"They will! Well, I-I think they will. My mom always says that… Never mind."

"Man, this guy is worse than both me and Ruby," he thought. "Nice to meet you, I'm Rindel White."

Ruby added in, "And I'm Ruby Rose!"

"So… Do you guys know where we're supposed to go? I'm kinda lost?"

At this, both of them turned towards me. Seriously, did they not read the notice everyone was sent before they arrived? "Sure, I can lead you guys if you want," Rindel stated.

With this, they left towards the auditorium where the welcoming ceremony was to be held. It was harder than he thought. The campus was huge, to say the least. After a while, the group fell into an awkward silence as no one knew what to say.

To break the silence, Ruby suddenly said, "So… I got this thing!" as she pulled out a giant red and black scythe from nowhere.

"Whoa! Is that a scythe?" Jaune asked.

"It's also a customizable high-impact sniper rifle!"

Confused, Jaune said, "A-wha… ?"

"It's also a gun," Rindel supplied.

"Exactly! So what've you guys got?" asked Ruby with a little too much enthusiasm.

Jaune cringed inwardly before going first, showing off a blade and shield. "I, uh got this sword! And I've got a shield, too."

As Ruby touched the shield, she asked, "So, what do they do?"

Fumbling greatly with his weapons, the shield shrunk, allowing him to put it back on his belt. "Well uh, the shield gets smaller, so when I get tired of carrying it, I can just… put it away…"

"Doesn't that just weigh the same though?" Rindel inquired.

Dejected, Jaune said, "Yeah, it does…"

Ruby giggled before asking, "What about you Rindel?"

Pulling out a beautiful pitch-black sword from its sheath, he said, "It's not much but I can get by with it." The weapon was so dark, it seemed to almost drain the light around it.

"Woah, it's beautiful! Can I hold it!" she yelled with enthusiasm while Jaune became visibly relieved he wasn't the only one without a super cool weapon that could transform into a gun.

"O-ok," Rindel said, handing over the blade to Ruby still surprised by the girl's enthusiasm.

Running a finger along the flat of the blade, the immaculate blade resonated with a crystal-clear tone. In awe, Ruby carefully handled the weapon as if a newborn baby. "Did you make this yourself?" she asked, still memorized. "I didn't see any metals like this when I went to Signal."

"No. It was made by a friend a long time ago," he said, smiling faintly at the memory.

"Hey guys, shouldn't we hurry up so we don't miss the ceremony?" Jaune asked, interrupting their conversation.

"Huh, oh yeah! Let's go!" Ruby said after reluctantly handing back Rindel's sword.

The auditorium was large enough to comfortably fit over a couple of hundred students at least. A large glass dome at the top allowed a steady stream of light to enter the building. There were around a hundred students already there that Rindel could see. A large podium sat at the front.

"Ruby! Over here! I saved you a spot!" said a waving Yang from among the crowd of students.

Running off to where the blonde was, Ruby called out, "See you two after the ceremony!"

Jaune and he waved as she disappeared into the sea of bustling students. With slight nervousness, he pleaded, "Please don't leave me too."

Rindel thought about it for a bit. He didn't really know anyone else here and he wasn't going to chase after Ruby. After a second, he responded, "Alright, I think I saw a spot over there that could work."

Jaune's expression brightened as he said with a smile, "Great! Let's go."
