Chapter 27: Saved By Spirits

As Ammine flew over the forest, she felt something unusual about it. She scanned the forest with her magic-enhanced eyes but was unable to see past all the trees and fog. Messa was right that there was something strange going on with this forest. Ammine couldn't tell exactly what it was but there was definitely something fishy going on in the forest.

While Ammine was trying to figure out what exactly was going on with the forest, Kies was finding some way to escape. From surprising the demon and forcing her to drop him when they were over a body of water to straight-up trying to convince her to let him free, none of his ideas seemed practical. For now, Kies could only wait for an opportunity to present itself to him, but it was going to be difficult considering how fast the demon was. She had picked him up and flew hundreds of feet into the air in a matter of seconds. If he did manage to somehow break free and not die from falling, there was no way he could outrun her.

Ammine continued to watch the forest carefully. A jolt suddenly went down her spine as he suddenly sensed something wrong and immediately sped up her pace over the forest. Ammine watched the forest with caution as they flew over. The moment that they passed the forest, Ammine felt a little safer, but her instincts were still screaming, saying that something was wrong.

It was then that a gale of wind shot up at immense speeds in front of them, knocking Ammine off balance and dropping Kies. Ammine swiftly recovered and immediately flew down to grab Kies but stopped mid-way in her tracks. She spun to the side just in time to dodge something that zoomed past her at an incredible speed. The force of the wind from whatever flew past her made her lose her balance once again, but this time she was unable to recover and started spiraling down towards the forest.

Kies was facing the ground as he fell and the wind was too strong, making it difficult to keep his eyes open. He watched as the trees grew bigger and bigger, but wasn't sure about how he would break his fall. But, if he guessed right, it should have been the wind spirits that attacked them, which meant that they were going to save him before he hit the ground.

As it turned out, he did guess correctly. Just as he was about to reach the tops of the trees, wind spirits flew out and circled around him, slowing down his fall. He floated down to the ground safely and looked around the forest. The entire place was packed full of wind spirits. They were causing a ruckus and breaking off branches and leaves.

"Hello?" Kies called out, expecting the voice to call back to him. But there was no response. Kies was confused. Where was the voice? Kies walked around the forest with no clear destination. Where were they?

There wouldn't have been so many spirits here if the voice was just going to save him. Kies looked around and tried to find if there was anything that stuck out. He noticed that the wind spirits were all flying in the same direction and followed them. Surely enough, after a bit of walking, Kies found the magic circle from the other day. But, this time there was something different about the circle.

Kies examined the circle. It was much larger than he had remembered, and the symbols looked different from last time. 'I'm guessing that I stand in the center again?' Kies started walking to the center of the circle but before he could reach it, red spikes shot out of the ground in front of him, forcing him to move back.

Ammine landed on top of the spikes in front of Kies. She hopped down from the spikes and started walking towards Kies but was halted by a gust of wind, cutting her skin. The demon looked around, trying to find who had attacked her. She wasn't able to see all the wind spirits that were flying around them. "Who is it!?"

Ammine summoned spikes at the trees in the direction of where the attack had come from. The spikes passed through several of the trees, leaving large gaping holes in them with none hitting a single wind spirit even with how many of them there were compacted in such a small space.

Ammine turned her focus back on Kies. She didn't know what was in the forest, but it looked like it was aiding him, and it was very powerful too. She needed to grab Kies and get out.
