Chapter 17: 017

The contents in the latter were rather crude. It was about showing sincerity and about how he would keep sending such 'funds' every year. The Dean finished reading the letter and looked at the kid in front of him. He could only be called as such.

The story behind everything was so cliché and far-fetched, it seemed to come out a B-rate comedy show… He was amused by it. Gemenore? Really? And tips from precious rainbow diamonds? Who would send such bribes to a dean like him from a small university? It was quite ridiculous.

It was already quite obvious that the kid nervously fidgeting in front of him in a cheap suit was the one behind Mr.Gemenore. He probably stumbled across a few precious gems and believed it would be enough to change his fate. At least, he believed it would be enough to enroll in this university. He was looking on his institution quite a bit, it seemed. Sure, they weren't the best but they remained above-average.

According to the letters, this kid was supposed to come here as a student and graduate legally with his fake identity. Then, he would report to this Mr. Gemenore and depending on the results of other scouts, a school would be picked for his son.

It was all a bunch of lousy bullshit.

But the gems were real and the kid in front of him was too. He was a youth without background who hatched a scheme in order to have a future. And he was basing everything on a few gemstones. Valuable ones, true, but still.

Anyways, he was quite impressive by the kid's guts. He probably came from a very poor place and got lucky finding some stones.

And so, he wondered what would the kid do if he were to reject him?

Then, he wondered if the kid thought of the possibility that he would reject him then send someone to tail him to get the rest of the gems. After all, according to the letters, there were at least three more of those. That was quite a sum. Many would be tempted.

He wasn't.

He was the Dean of a super university in one of the nine greatest cities of a second-ranked planet. He had wealth far greater than a random man. And a lot of power through connections too. Basically, he didn't have to take interest in those gems.

This Dean…He prided himself in his uptight nature and being the embodiment of a teacher. He valued his position and his morals. And what was the duty of a Dean? To help young ones to get access to knowledge. And here there was a youth who was willing to put himself at risk for knowledge.

It would be disrespectful of him to reject the kid when considering his own beliefs.

And no one was ever too wealthy.

He decided to play along with the kid and said: "Alright. I certainly felt Mr Gemenore's sincerity. I will allow you to enroll in our university officially as a student like any other"

The kid bowed trying hard to control his excitement and not let it show. It was quite amusing. Still, he needed to make sure the kid understood his position: "I will let you enroll in our engineer department as a freshman starting next semester. However, there will be no special treatments, do you understand?"

The kid nodded and answered positively. Maybe he didn't quite comprehend the meaning behind his words. He decided to state it more explicitly: "I do believe that Mr Gemenore did not send someone incompetent who would fail the exams and be forced to redo a grade. As such, there should be no need for us to discuss about such things"

The kid fidgeted a little but kept up his act. He tried to act like it was nothing but he, the dean, could see that the kid was slightly apprehensive. He chuckled. Then, he finished his drink and got up.

"Welcome to our university, Mr Morgensen, It is a pleasure to have you amongst our students"

"The honor is mine, Dean Nerison"

He led the kid back to the entrance and told him to wait a bit. A secretary would bring the official papers related to his enrollment and help him fill them out. As he left the room, he laughed lightly at the foolishness of these days' youths…

The meeting with the Dean had been a very frightening experience to Ron Morgensen who never had previous encounters with business deals. Fortunately, it ended well. Turned out he managed to fool the man and considering that he was given official papers later on, it was settled. He would attend university starting the next semester in three weeks.

A bright path opened to him. He made the right choice. He gave his silent thanks to the inexistant Mr Gemenore for its help. Then, he went back home and stopped at the usual restaurant on the way. He excitedly ordered some cheap food while cheerfully telling the waitress about his successful enrollment.

She had a hard time believing this kid. The first day, he came wearing random ugly clothes that made him seem like a weirdo. The second day, he wore casual and decent clothes and looked like anyone else who would have forgotten to get a haircut. And now, on the third day, he wore a suit and his hair was neatly tied behind his head. What's more, he was announcing that he enrolled at university? She wondered what would happen tomorrow. Would he come here driving a flying car and stating he found a job as a teacher?

She chuckled at the thought. This kid was truly a funny one.

As for Ron, after the euphoria came the realism. He would study, sure, but then what? He would need money to survive. And there might a requirement for more money in order to get books and such to learn. The secretary did say so…

Where would he find money?

He had been rejected everywhere when he asked for a job.

He still couldn't sell the gems, especially considering he planned to stay on this planet. It was too much of a risk. Even going to the Dean had been quite the gamble. The gains had been worth it but he wasn't ready to take another one like that anytime soon.
