Chapter 6: Assassins
"While you were busy off your ass playing video games"
We began a mighty stare off until the chirping of a flying bird broke it.
Aiden turned around and looked forward. For someone who didn't know him, he'll think that he's just staring at the ripples occuring on the surface of the stream or he's been transfixed by the flowing water, but I knew better.
Few years ago, I would've never done this but like I said earlier, this boy has grown on me.
I moved to where he sat on the forest floor and hugged him from the back. I held him tightly.
After a few seconds of silence, his shoulders began to shake and he started hiccuping.
I continued to hold him and rubbed his back as he cried.
"Ah, so embarrassing" he said as if clearing an air of awkwardness but I knew he was feeling embarrassed.
I placed my hand on his shoulder and gave him a slight squeeze as he turned his head the other way to wipe his tears.
"Hey, there's nothing to be embarrassed about. I may not understand this whole mate thingy but I know it's important to you and that's all that matters."
"That doesn't make it any less embarrassing " he heaved a sigh and covered his face.
I couldn't help chuckling at his childishness.
"I've never seen you cry or do anything embarrassing. Why am I always the one to?" he pouted.
"Silly, life would have been boring if we were of the same character kiddo"
"Hey! Who are you calling a kid huh? I'm older than you" he wailed.
"Pshhhh, who'd believe that?"
"So respectful" he sassed. I chuckled lowly.
He drifted into his mental house again.
"You'll find her, you know that right?"
"I don't know anymore Ever"
"It's been only two years, are you just going to give up?"
"Two painful years" he stressed.
"Come on! Didn't you say that that Vampire King cousin of yours has been waiting for his mate like since forever?"
Maybe I exaggerated the forever a little bit. But according to Aiden, the guy's pretty ancient. He's over 100 years old y'all.
Seriously I don't remember everything, I was nasty tired that day.
What learning can do to the brain, hmm.
"He's him and I'm me"
"Yeah right" I sassed
"I've got duties, Ever"
"Are we talking about the same person?"
"Believe it or not I can be serious when need be."
I scoffed.
"Believe what you want, but being a royal is not all riches and good living, it's a headache. Mates makes us stronger and gives us a sense of purpose. My family gave me only three years to find her. If I'm not able to do it within this period, then I have to choose someone from the coven."
"What's the hurry?"
"Mmmm, members of the royal family ain't many. Those alive also risks being assassinated with every intake of breath. We have to reproduce to fill the spaces before we're wiped out. I can't be selfish." He dragged his hands on his face.
"But you've been doing well for a long while now."
"Yeah, because of the King. But we're afraid he's going to drop if he doesn't find his mate."
"Oh"
"Yeah, being unmated causes a lot of mental issues."
I can see that" I joked to lighten the mood.
"Hey, watch it."
We broke into a silly not so fist-y fight.
"My family has done a lot for me especially, my cousin the King. If I'm not able to find her within this year, I'll go back and accept my responsibilities."
"You'll find her, don't worry so much" I ruffled his hair.
"It's okay, back off my hair. You're part of the reason why it's so unruly." he fought my hand away from his head.
"Don't blame your hair misfortunes on me ."
"Humph"
"Anyway, you never told me what the Vampire King did for you"
"Yeah, I guess not. It's not sad worthy or anything."
"Who's looking for a soppy story here?" I glared at him.
"Mmn, it's been about twenty four years since it happened. You were still a baby then huh?" He pinched my cheek.
"Shut it, Grandpa" I grumbled.
Aagh! I hate it when he pulls the I'm older than you card. It's so damn annoying! He's lucky I love his annoying ass, if not he'd have a nice ass whooping from moi.
"Can't take a joke?" he dared to wink at me as well.
"Get on with it already" I gave him the finger.
"Hold your horses babe, it's my story"
"Humph" I sighed, crossing my arms on my bosom. I then turned to face away from him in annoyance. That boy uses every chance he gets to aggravate me when he clearly knows I have a short fuse.
"Okay, okay, I'll get on with it. Like I said earlier, it happened twenty fours years ago. After so many years of not finding his mate, be finally felt a connection that day. According to the elders, my cousin was so excited. He left everything he had to do and left to pursue his mate.
" On the way, he felt distress through the family link. As King, he was able to detect the exact person who was in trouble. Since that day, I always thanked the Moon Goddess for giving my cousin the idea for every member of the family to make a blood pact with him."
"What does the blood pact do?" I asked him.
"Although we're already connected as a family, with the blood pact and my cousin's powers, he could locate any of us at anytime, communicate with us no matter where we are, read our minds and can also detect our emotions. He can feel it whenever any of us is in trouble."
"Read your minds, isn't that a breach of privacy?"
I'd hate for anyone to be able to read my mind 24/7.
"Yeah, I know. But although he can , he doesn't ." he said.
"oh?"
*Yeah, he actually prefers not to hear our thoughts since he has a lot on his plate already. He's actually taught us a way to shut him out. Although he still read our minds if he pushes far enough."
"Oh!" he seems like a decent guy, I think .
"Did I also tell you that he can teleport?"
"Really? Wow!!" that's awesome because I've always wished I could teleport. Sucks that I can't. Maybe I could get this cousin of his to help me.
"Yeah, he stopped the task of finding his mate and came to our house instead. But he was a bit too late, my parents had been injured already.
"That day, I woke up to beautiful sunny atmosphere and the smell of my mother's awesome chocolate cookies. We went for a family picnic in the afternoon and were suppose to have a movie night in the evening while eating junk food. My parents were simply awesome." he said with a huge smile on his face. I could tell that he was reminiscing over the memories.
