"Steve." I walked into the shabby apartment excited for our dinner date. "Where are you?" I walk into Steve's living room to find him with an ice pack on his eye and an application form at his feet. I walk over and pick it up.
"What's this?" I eye the form realising what it was. "Steve," I press my fingers to my forehead frustrated, "hon, we talked about this they aren't going to let you in." Steve looks up at me pain in his eyes. I kneel down so that our eyes were interlocking, "Steve talk to me, what's going on?"
Steve sighs, "you wouldn't understand."
"Than help me too, ever since your mum died you have become so distant. The only times I get to see you is if I am organising it." I had become desperate for him to finally talk to me, I grabbed his hand and held it safety in between mine. "Please just talk to me."
Steve gets up and heads over to the kitchen, tossing my hand to the side. "I can't, I just can't watch all these men go out, risking their lives and do nothing when I could be standing there with them."
"You know that is why I fell in love with you Steve. I fell in love with you because of your heart." I head over to where Steve is standing. "But your heart isn't going to get you a spot in the front lines."
"I am still going to try." I could see the determination in his eyes.
"Haven't you done enough, can't you just focus on taking care of your younger sister and focus on us."
"I'm sorry but I can't, not when I can still do something."
"No Steve I am sorry," I grab my bag and head out of the kitchen, "every time I see you, you either have a black eye or a bloodied lip. If that's how you end up after a small punch up in an alleyway than imagine what is going to happen in a war. I can't see you get hurt like this anymore Steve, I am sorry but I think we need to split up." I can see the pain splattered on his face and that's when the tears begin to fall, I look at Steve waiting for his reply, but nothing comes. "Goodbye Steve." I then head out the door letting the cool air of the night freeze my salty tears.
I sit on the couch, pull out a book and begin to read, after working all day I needed to rest a little. I was just about to reach my favourite part when I hear a knock at the front door. I open it immediately to reveal Luca anxiously waiting for me, I squeal excited to hear how her and Bucky are going. I lead her into the house and demand to hear every single detail, I quickly make tea and sit down next to Luca on the couch.
"So, did you kiss?" I stare at Luca noticing the blood rush to her face.
"Yes." At this reply I jump up and begin squealing, clapping my hands together, I was so happy for her.
That's when my mum peeks around the corner and says, "mind your manners Paige."
I bow my head and nod sadly, "yes mother." I can here a giggle escape Lucas' mouth so I turn around and glare at her but she quickly covers it up by sipping her tea.
We spend the rest of the day together talking mostly about the kiss but I also mentioned a couple of details about work and how I am so close to a new discovery. I am about to tell her about the new book I got on Asguardian mythology when I hear a knock at the door. I get up and walk to the door to find Bucky wearing a soldiers uniform. I bring my hand to my mouth shocked, "Bucky, what, how." He looks at me pleading me to understand, "I'll go get Luca."
I walk back into the dinning room to find Luca in the same position she was in before. "Luca… it's for you."
She places her tea on the table and runs to the door, when she reaches the hallway I can see her stop. I grab her hand and squeeze it trying to tell her it's going to be okay. Bucky sighs sadly, Luca brings her hands to her mouth trying to hold back the tears.
"You're not serious," she says.
Bucky looks down almost guiltily, "I'm sorry Luca, I didn't have a choice." She walks up to him and wraps him in her arms, he then embraces the hug and wraps his own arms around her.
I stand there awkwardly, listening to them mumble stuff to each other when Luca turns around, "Can she come?" Luca asks Bucky.
"Um excuse me, but she has a name." I reply still annoyed at how awkward I looked.
Luca just laughs, "fine, can Paige come."
Bucky nods and replies, "sure doll."
As Bucky leaves I walk up to Luca, "I'm so sorry." I say.
Luca looks at me her eyes still red and puffy, "me too."
