Chapter 3: Part 3: Sorat

We rushed Jamie into the clinic room. The clinic room was behind a stone wall in our class. Jamie lay motionless on the bed, the glowing tubes next to her. Only the medicinal plants could help her. she had several of the tubes going into her. no one knew what happened so we had no idea how to stop it.

It was hard to tell if she was breathing or not until we heard her take in a big gasp of air. She started violently shaking. There was no emotion or colour on her face, it was like a continuous hypnic jerk while you're dead. The tube containing the yellow daffodils started glowing, yellow daffodils helped with Sorat based wounds, it was highly unlikely and extremely rare. Sorats helped, they dare not harm. I leaped forward to help her but Lars pulled me back, and continued to stare at her. Him and Shaheed exchanged an unhealthy amount of curious glares aimed at me.

Shaheed walked to a cupboard that sat limply in a corner. It looked as if it hadn't been opened in years, abandoned. He pulled out a circular device that I was not then familiar with. It was made out of the same metal as the rod that Shaheed had previously pressed against my collar bone on my sorat to check if my powers had accelerated. I couldn't understand what he was going to do with it in that moment.

I hadn't known all the terminology for Euphorian technology. The device was called a Sanski, it was embedded at the top of it with what looked like gold. "What's going on? Is she going to be okay? What's that for?" All my questions were left unanswered. Lars grabbed the Sanski and placed it over her sorat.

I wondered if they had heard me or not. I opened my mouth to ask again in the hopes that I would finally find out what was happening but I was interrupted by Lars pulling me closer to Jamie by my elbow. I shot him a puzzled glare which he again ignored, I would've asked Shaheed but he didn't seem like he would be any more help. After a brief moment of silence Lars spoke: "Keemi, pull down your polar neck."

"I beg your pardon?" I was more confused than I had been in a long time. "Look at your Sorat and get your mind out of the gutters!"

I tugged on the top of the polar neck I was wearing and looked at my sorat on my collarbone. It was glowing pink and the shape had changed. "W-What does that mean?" I wasn't familiar with that colour.

"Sorats can activate, enhance and reveal certain emotions and grant powers. It is on your collarbone because that's where all of those emotions and powers pass through. The heart or diamond shapes reveal if you're run by your emotions or thoughts." Shaheed wasn't being much help by sharing the with me the details that I had already known by then. It was like teaching someone how to fly a plane and then telling them, "So build a rocket now." Utterly insane and useless.

"I get that but pink isn't a normal colour for a Sorat, and why did the shape change and what does this have to do with Jamie?" They shared a curious look once again. I advise all women to never find a smart guy if this is what you have to go through.

"Look Keemi, you have a merge." Watching Lars' jaw move while he talked was quite fascinating and amusing but it wasn't all that fun when I had no idea what he was talking about. "WHAT IS A MERGE? AND CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT ANY OF THIS HAS TO DO WITH JAMIE!" I couldn't help but yelling, it was unlike me but they wouldn't answer any questions without beating around the bush.

"It's rare. Merges are run by their emotions as well as their thoughts, equally. They existed thousands of years ago and were endangered. The council thought of them as weak and bench players. They hardly helped in wars because of being, in the nicest way possible, two sided. They created the Sanski and interpreted the colours of the Sorats and found ways to interfere with other ones." He lost me with his words for the umpteenth time in the period of 45 minutes.

"So... I'm doing this to her?" They nodded in response and I could feel a sense of fear being instilled in me. "How do I stop it? Am I hurting her?" Quiet and heavy sobs started escaping through my mouth faster than I could control them.

"We don't know, it's very rare, you have to be in control right now. We don't know if its hurting her but we can't rule out the possibility that it's not." How could I be in control as a merge. I would have to control my emotions and thoughts. Jamie could be hurt if I didn't.

I ran out of the clinic room, past the stone wall and sat by a garden nearby. I couldn't stop the tears from escaping. I suddenly felt myself getting lightheaded. A mysterious boy walked towards me. I identified him as Greyson. He looked different up close or it was just the tears disorienting my vision. He placed his hand on my shoulder and I felt calm again. The rush of emotions and violent thought that I was experiencing had come to a halt. "Keep it together." He told me in a bare voice just above a whisper. My body relaxed and I heard Jamie scream once more.
