Chapter 5: 5. Inner Circle

Deja followed Abigail to a large circular table towards the back of the cafeteria. She looked around and noticed it was the only circular table there. Seated at the table were six other kids who peered at her. She couldn't quite gage what they thought of her. They all looked so cool and collected.

"Are you hungry?" asked Abigail, she gestured to a catering table on wheels just behind her with food covered in sterling server domes. "We have sushi, sashimi and watermelon sake today. Colin, make her a plate."

One of the kids at the table who was wearing a letter jacket jumped up at her command and went to the rolling table, lifted a cover exposing lines of sushi, and began to assemble a dish for Deja as she sat down.

He placed the plate in front of her with packets of soy sauce and a cup of sake. Curious, Deja took a sip of the sake and was shocked to taste the alcohol in it.

Abigail winked and said, "I won't tell if you won't."

Not wanting to be rude, Deja proceeded to eat the sushi as the group calmly regarded her.

"So," said Abigail after a while, "I will go over the introductions and rules of our group. You decide if you want in or not. First, I have decided that for you there will be no initiation."

The boy that was sitting next to Abigail coughed and stateds, "What?"

"I said NO INITIATION," repeated Abigail giving him a dangerous look. She turned back to Deja and sweetly said, "You don't have to prove your worth, dear. I can clearly recognize one of my own."

Deja didn't know how to respond to that and instead continued to eat. Surprised at the flavor of the sushi. She could swear it's the best she ever had.

"Now for introductions," Abigail pointed to the boy to her right who had interrupted her earlier, "This is Milton. His father is an oil tycoon, mother a senator." Milton nodded at her. He is blonde with blue eyes and chiseled features. Almost too chiseled. Cosmetic surgery chiseled. "Then we have Clyde." Clyde had deep mahogany skin, short perfectly coiffed black hair with an intricate design shaved onto his skull. He's also wearing a letterman jacket. "Clyde is a famous running back on the GH football team," explained Abigail., "Next to him is Olivia, class president and Miss Teen America runner up." Olivia was a gorgeous Latina with golden colored skin. She was also an image of perfection in her own way. She smiled at Deja while narrowing her eyes as if she was examining her sternly. "Behind me is Colin, he's a freshman but plays on the varsity team as a kicker." Colin nodded from his station behind Abigail. He had brown hair and a solid frame. It wasn't too hard to figure out they had him as some sort of servant boy because he was only a freshman.

"As for moi," stated Abigail as she placed her hand on her chest and smiled imploringly, "I'm the Queen B. A teen fashion designer with my own company based out of L.A., New York, and maybe one day Paris as well. I do what I want when I want. As for the rules: We keep our inner circle small. There are others in other lunch periods I'll introduce you to later. Many may sit around our table but only inner circle sits at the round table. The dress code is perfection or letter jackets. We are no drama, sloppiness, slut shaming or gossip. No bullies or bullying. We never cry in the open. No smoking, freebasing, or needles. Do what you want with whomever but always use protection. No kids. No STDs. Can I ask you some questions?"

Deja gulped, trying to take everything in, "Sure." She said between bites.

"How old are you?"

"Fourteen."

"Ah, just a baby. Yet, you are here in 2nd period lunch. How come?"

"I'm a Junior"

"Interesting. Honors?"

"I'm sorry. I've been homeschooled up until this point. I don't know what you mean by 'Honors'."

"Do you do anything else? Volunteer? Model? Sports?"

"No. Not yet."

"Oh, fun! You can be our own little build a bear project. What about your love life? Are you crushing on anyone yet? Boy? Girl?"

"Actually, I have a boyfriend."

"A boyfriend?! Back home in France?"

Deja suppressed a chuckle. "No, he goes here."

Abigail's eyes widened, "Really, who, girl? Spill!"

"Well," said Deja, "his name is Jeremiah McKenzie."

At this, Abigail's blinked in astonishment, "THE Jeremiah McKenzie? The GH quarterback?"

Deja nodded.

"Interesting," said Abigail, "Although, that maybe a slight issue."

"Really," said Deja surprised, "Why?"

"Well he-," started Abigail

"No gossip!" interrupted Milton in a sing song voice.

"Well," said Abigail changing directions, "You'd have to ask him. As for you, I give you a day to let us know if you accept our formal invitation into the Inner Circle. Although, I am confident you'll make the right decision."

Deja drank some sake, nodded, and said, "Okay." meekly to the imposing group.

Abigail was about to ask more questions but the bell rang for the next period.

"Quick," she said, "Give me your phone. Let me program my number."

Deja reached in her purse, took out her phone and handed it to her. She added herself as a contact and then texted herself so that she'd have Deja's number in her phone as well. She handed her phone back to her.

"I'll text you the Inner Circle phonebook tonight and add you to our Pages page. You should take a look at the site. You can learn a lot about us there."

"Okay," Deja was a little overwhelmed, but she remembered to smile back. She looked down at her plate and saw she had finished everything. "Thanks for the food," she added. Not wanting to be impolite.

"It's nothing," said Abigail, waving the air in front of her, "We have something awesome delivered for lunch every day for Inner Circle." She beamed proudly when she stated this.

Deja had to get going so she excused herself and headed off to class. The sake in her stomach and the rush of all that had happened had all comingled and left her light headed. Her phone buzzed. She took it out and saw someone had sent her a friend request on Pages. It was Abigail who had sent a request for her personal page as well as the page for Inner Circle.

Her first day was way turning out to be much more than she expected. She wasn't sure how she felt about it all. More than anything, she couldn't wait to see Jeremiah. Her class with him was next. She put her phone back in her purse and proceeded to class.
