Chapter 9: Chapter 8

The God of Death, Hasul looked at her with a surprised look on his face. Which quickly turned into one of amusement

"How could you guess?" Hasul asked. Marie looked at him and pointed to his eyes.

"Gods were described to have yellow eyes, I also met you once," She said. He chuckled teeth showing, they were like a shark's.

"Yes, the little elemental child I took from that couple and brought to that brat King Luci," Hasul said calmly, Marie smirked as Hasul began ruffling her hair. "You've grown quite nicely indeed. You're still so young my dear, why are you in the armies?" He asked. Marie laid back down.

"I've believed that the Dragon Kings were wrong about us. As were the Angels. But this war's taken so many lives from us. My mother included. But this war isn't just between them but ourselves" Marie said staring at those golden eyes. "I wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to do something"

She looked at the sky the clouds billowing westward. The night grew near and a night chill blew past. Marie didn't shiver but did feel that chill that rolled down her spine.

"If you wanted to do something why didn't you talk to your father? I'm sure he'd listen to a smart girl like you" He said leaning back. The grass crunching as his hands fell against it.

"Father is, complicated," Marie said grimacing. Hasul looked at her for a second a blank look on his face

"Ah I see, he's an ass," Hasul said. Marie looked at him. She laughed. Hasul smiled. She quickly blushed and covered her mouth.

"I'm sorry, I'm not supposed to do that" She apologized. Hasul sighed and combed through his hair with his hand.

"You should smile more than once a year for formalities, Marie," He said. Of course, he'd know her name.

She sighed,

"That was the first time I've laughed in a while" She admitted sitting up. He looked at her. "I guess it's been so long since I've had a father figure to talk too, one who cared at least," She smiled softly. He smiled back.

"Well then if you want, I'll be your godfather. You are like me, misunderstood. I also like to protect my kids. Blood or not" He said smiling.

She smiled and nodded.

It felt nice to have a caring father figure. Hasul would meet up on the hill and talk or tell stories to his ward. She enjoyed laying in his lap as he read to her a book she'd like or one of his own books. He'd give her some small bracelets, or a simple necklace that she'd wear with pride.

And she personally liked that someone noticed her in a loving fatherly way. She wasn't fully used to it at first but she liked it despite rarely showing anyone out front.

Which was just the way she liked it.
