Chapter 2: Chapter 2

After twenty years

The moonbeam and the starlights glimmered the musky and eerie streets of Martial's city. If you go for its uncivilised look, You will never wander at night. However, trust it or not, nothing bad really happens here. If you love nature like thick tropical forest, swampland and fresh air then Martial's city is the best place for you.

Light breezes hit my back, blew my platinum blond hair and tickled my neck. I strained my eyes side-ways the lined trees. Anytime, someone or something might pounce on me. It was my first night out, and I did not choose the best place to come. Why the hell did I accept Oliver's invitation?. Oliver was not my type. He was shorter than me, pimpled- face, slimmed like a wooden stick, oily red hair and wore a walnut-shaped glass.

"What are you looking at?" asked a breathy and guttural voice.

"Nothing" I murmured.

He came in front of me and cracked a smile. I felt bad for him. Unintentionally, I gave him hope that there was something between us, just because I wanted to have a friend once in my life. I was always the bullied one because of my blazing fire eyes. People either called me a witch or the demon's daughter. How idiotic and self-centered I was.

"Hey!" Oliver snapped his fingers.

"Oh! Hi," I responded.

"Why did you distance yourself from the campfire?"

"I, I..., for fresh air," I blabbered.

"Fresh air?" he darkened his bushy eyebrows.

"I mean alcohol stank there, and I needed some real fresh air. You know," I rephrased.

"Oh! Sorry. Instead, of dancing around the campfire, I should have remained by your side." he reached his right hand and caressed my rosy cheek.

Inhibition and guilt hit me hard. I felt even more awful than before. What a horrible Creature I was, but this charade needed to took an end. It's been only one week since we met each other and nobody falls in love that quickly. I convinced myself. It will not be like the end of the world, my rejection might just pinch his heart a bit.

"Oliver...."

"Shush, I know what you want to say," he hushed me.

"Really?"

"Yes," he took a long audible breath before proceeding "you want to have a walk-in this dense and gloomy forest!" he grinned.

No. I wanted to yell a big no, but my head nodded yes. He ruffled my hair and held my hand. He looked more like a child than my little five years old sister. I silently flounced beside him. Deep-rooted feelings messed my mind; Oliver was precious to me as a friend, he was always there whenever I needed him. He was too affectionate, caring, loving and adorable to break his heart. Maybe I should give it a try. Like we can go to the gym; grow up some muscles in those scrawny arms, encourage him to have a good hairstyle and make him visit a good dermatologist.

"Here, we are!" Oliver uttered.

We lonesome ourselves in the woods. The only sounds were the chirping of crickets. He patted my hands and nuzzled his face against mine. He would surely kiss me with his brace yellow teeth. Feeling disgusted and compelled, I closed my eyes and waited for the worst to come.

"I cannot do that!" sniffed Oliver.

"Do what?" I opened my eyes abruptly.

"Loving you!" he cried.

Amazed, I stared at him with disbelief. I was the one going to break his heart, and I pitied him. Mix feelings submerged me; I did not know if I should be grateful or furious. Oliver, the grotesque and ugliest boy, was rejecting me. How dared he!. I wanted so badly to squeezed the juice out of him, but he instantly wept like a big baby.

"I am sorry. You are beautiful, Nina, and everybody knows that. But, your eyes, it scares me," he dissolved into tears.

And you are not my type, too. My inner voice manifested, but my mouth refused to utter those words. He had the right to dislike me, just like I did not want him. But accepting rejection had always been complex to me.

"That's okay. We can remain, friends," I offered him a hand.

"No!, Jessica will not like it," he pushed my hand away.

"Jessica! Who is Jessica?" I asked with total amazement.

"My girlfriend," he said with misty eyes.

Okay, that was too much. He crossed the limit of insulting me. Heat and raged aroused my system; my face became red like tomatoes, I clenched my fist and conked him.

"You hit me. I will tell my mother!" he warned and ran away, leaving me alone in the wood.

"Fine, run away. I will find my way back home alone." I yelled at him.

"Or maybe not" I murmured to myself.

I swirled around and turned on the flashlight of my phone. That pimple head will pay for this. Happy that I wore a body warmer inside my layered sleeved red blouse, else the cold would have frozen me.

The more I tried to find my way back, the better I found myself lost. Left with only one choice, I dialled the number of my dad. He surely gonna kill me. I bunked home to come here. My father never let me out, unless he remained with me throughout the night or day out. My only freedom was going to university and then back home. The phone rang four times until a raucous voice answered.

"Hello," he answered with a sleepy voice.

"Daddy" I shivered.

"Nina, why are you calling me? You are in your room, don't you?"

"Dad, please come and find me!"I pleaded

"What? Where are you?" he alarmed.

"I run away from home. I am in the wood near Quincy university and I am lost"

"How can you be so irresponsible?" he yelled

"Daddy. Please"

"Look at your hand, you are shivering." he continued

"What? Ho-how to you know that"

"Look behind you, young girl"

Slowly and cautiously, I turned behind and spotted a very aerated father in his night suits. I'm in trouble and I deserved it. Fuming, he dashed near me and fixed me in the eyes. Unable to face him, I averted my head.

"Look at me!"

"Dad, I did not mean it"

"Mean what? To flee with that ugly frog. Are you serious? What if I did not follow you?"

"Just take me home, please"

"Fine. Follow me, we will continue this conversation once home. Do not even try to pacify me, Nina".
