Chapter 2: Chapter 2

I was able to escape the dark library thanks to the police who arrived at the scene. I was also spared from false accusation thanks to the card and a witness who saw Auriel escape from the building. By the time I got home, it was one in the morning.

As soon as I arrived in school, I asked a classmate in the hallway: "Have you seen Gene?"

I was itching to tell my best friend about my encounter with the phantom thief last night. I didn't really have any other good friends to tell it to.

"I think he went to the back of the school somewhere," replied the classmate whose name I totally forgot.

"Thanks!"

I ran to the back of the school building to look for him.

"Good morning, Beatrice."

I heard Gene's usual sleepy voice. The moment I turned my head, I saw him sitting on the ground carrying kittens. One climbed on top of his head, resting on his fluffy red hair.

"Nooo! Don't do that," he said to the little kitten and got it off his head.

I pointed at him. "There you are. I was looking for you."

"This one is named Aristotle. Isn't he cute?" He held up the kitten.

I sat beside him. "What's with all the cats?"

"I love cats and they love me back," he said simply, as if it was a fact that could never be changed.

"I know that but...why are there suddenly so many?"

"I'm not sure why, but more of them started to gather and live here."

"Maybe it's cause you're always feeding them."

He picked up another cat. He now had six cats in his arms, one on his shoulder, and another one on his head. "I can't help it. They're so cute." He looked so happy.

Ever since I could remember, Gene had always been a cat magnet. He was terrible at making friends with people, but he was a god at attracting cute animals.

"Let's go to the classroom before we're late," I said.

"Wait, let me put them down first."

I reached out to get the cat off his head, but it scratched me. I pulled back my hand and examined the scratch.

"Are you ok, Beatrice?" Gene hurriedly placed down all the cats he was holding.

I shrugged. "Well, it's not bleeding, so I guess I'm alright."

"Let me see."

He took my hand and examined it.

"Just a light scratch. Thank goodness." He smiled in relief and stood up. "Let's go."

When we both went to the classroom, our teacher was already at the door ready to start homeroom period. I noticed Gene's bag moving as if there was a tentacle monster inside ready to escape. Instead of a sea monster, a cat head emerged from the opening.

A cat. In Gene's bag. Sounds like a recipe for trouble.

If the teacher finds out, he's going to get suspended. This is bad.
