Chapter 9: A Show of Power
As I'm suspended in the air, the wolf continues to eat his meal, ignoring me and baldie, or more like it knows it can catch up with us the moment he starts to move.
It's a Gold grade beast, the equivalent in power to a Gold Star Elementalist.
The difference between ranks is pretty clear. At the Iron Star level, you normally have 1 element and the maximum amount of energy your mana pool can contain is 500 Units. At Coper Star level you have 2 Elements, with the limit being 1000 units. Silver Stars have 3 Elements and the amount grows to 2000 units. And lastly, Gold Star level comes with 4 elements and a limit of 5000 units of energy on your mana pool.
These limits are independent of each other, so if you first need to reach 500 units in one element to breakthrough to a Copper Star elementalist, you will later need to raise two mana pools to the limit of 1000 units for the next breakthrough to be possible, and so on and so forth.
In the beast's case, most of them have only one element, and the unit limit holds true, but different from humans, they don't need to breakthrough to the next realm, or take in a second element to continue to grow. Aside from that, they don't have a mana pool, the energy they have is stored in their body, strengthening it at giving them superb close combat abilities and making their bodies so valuable to us. Most beasts lack the control that humans have over elemental energy, but their bodies also evolve to give them long range capabilities, some birds can shoot out their feathers like knives, other beasts can attack with energy breath, and many other abilities.
This beast in front of me in particular, is a Dark Element Gold grade beast, commonly known as Darkness Wolf, or Shadowwalk wolf. It has high speed and can jump out from it's prey shadow, getting them easily on its speciality, close combat.
Finished with his meal, the wolf dives into its shadow, only to suddenly appear behind baldie.
"F*ck!" he screams.
He evades in panic, and continues to run, this time in my direction. As he reaches near me, he cancels the skill that he had casted on me earlier, making me fall to the ground, as I neared him, he tried to grab me and throw me in the wolf direction.
Right when he's about to do it, i activate the time stop, land on the ground and push him towards the wolf, right after, i start sprinting. A second later, the clock starts again, and he finds himself falling towards the wolf, and I'm several feet away from him.
"Noo...." as he tries to scream something, the wolf catches up to it, with a single bite, he's dead, snapped in half at the waist.
While the wolf is eating I continue to run, using every bit of thunder energy left in myself. My time energy is mostly depleted.
As I'm about to turn the corner of the street, I feel a chill on my back, without thinking, I dive forward and as I do so, I feel a lacerating pain on my back.
The wolf jumped from my shadow, leaving me with four new wounds, after a swipe with his claw.
I continue to run and stumble in my attempt to survive. Suddenly a big mouth envelopes my head. Right when it's about to chomp it off I activate the time control ability, overdrafting my mana pool.
Time stops, right when I'm about to die, seeing the big teeth inches away from my face, I pale.
I manage to squat down and while doing so I shoot every last bit of thunder energy into the opened mouth of the beast.
Time restarts and the beast yelps in pain as he ends with a mouthful of thunder. I continue to run trying my best to survive even one more second.
After all such a big beast will cause a commotion, the experts from the front line will certainly come to kill it soon enough. I only need to survive until then.
Again the beast jumps from my shadow and tries to bite me, I use the time stop again, not caring if my mana pool gets destroyed. I manage to dive down but the pain and overdraft of my mana pool makes it impossible for me to continue to move on.
As I lay on the floor,the wolf looks at me with a human-like smirk on his hairy face.
"Now even a damn beast dares to look down on me" i tell myself in anger
"At least i got my revenge on baldie hahahaha" i start laughing as i look at the wolf that is approaching slowly.
Right when it's about to attack, an arrow of fire hits its head, an explosion ensues.
I look up only to see the old man from the Covenant floating in the sky, looking down on everything.
"Seems you have good luck kid, managing to survive until now" he says.
"And good friends too" he adds.
At that moment, twelve swords made of light form, orbiting around his body. The wolf looks up in fear, and starts growling menacingly.
"Go" he said, waving his hand. Right after the swords start to attack the wolf from every angle, with every slash a new wound forms in his fur. The beast is powerless to retaliate or even escape from its predicament. Soon enough, he manages to kill the wolf, a sword of light penetrating his head.
As I lay there watching the power the old man demonstrated, I swore to myself that one day I would reach that level.
As i'm about to faint i hear voices calling my name
"Leon... LEON..." it seems Lana came with his teacher. That's the last thing I think of before my consciousness fades.
