Chapter 1: Prologue: The daughter of the light

On a cold, snowy December evening, a brilliant white light shone from up above, illuminating the vast plains below. A figure came into view; it was of a woman with hair as white and pure as the light bathing her body and skin as fair as the morning sun. She was the epitome of beauty--an angel. Her ivory white wings were carrying her lightweight. The woman slowly opened her elegantly-shaped and crystalline, blue eyes and covered up her bare body. The cold didn't bother her, for she basked in the warm light.

A deep, mellow voice spoke to her, "My dear daughter, I present you with your mission: you must warn the benevolent King Aeonis and Queen Eleanor of Kamaria for the upcoming famine that will strike in the following year."

The fair maiden looked up at the clouds above her, with her wings moving gracefully, keeping her feet off the powdery grass. "That is my duty." She looked down at her hands covering her body and pondered for a moment. After a couple of seconds, she asked, "But what is my name, oh great father?"

The voice of her creator rang through the plains and valleys once more, "You shall be called Eden, just like the beautiful paradise of which I created with my own two hands." His tone became serious as he speaks again. "Please promise me this: you shall avoid falling in love with a mortal man, or else there will be dire consequences. Although, I allow you to remain on earth once you complete your goal. I trust that you will comply with my commandments, Eden?"

The angel bit her lower lip, she knew that she easily falls in love, and actually has already fallen for a man that she observed from heaven. "Father, I-I'm sorry but I have already laid my eyes on someone."

Eden was greeted with a few moments of tense silence as she awaited her Father's answer.

"If that is the case, I shall allow it. Instead, you are not allowed to have copulation with that man or any man. I will repeat myself once again, will you be able to comply to these rules?"

Eden eagerly replied, "Oh, of course!"

And with that, the white light vanishes, along with her wings, in a dazzling array of bright lights and feathers.

The angel immediately dropped to the ground, lucky that she had snow to cushion her high fall. Eden rubbed the place in her back where her wings were supposed to be, sore from the sudden drop. "My wings... they're gone...", she said as her voice cracked in anguish. "This is going to be tough. May the Lord guide m-"

An unwelcome shiver spread throughout her entire body. Her vision became hazy, to the point where she couldn't distinguish the trees with rocks anymore. Eden's knees buckled and wobbled before falling to her knees. "I can't die this early on in my mission! G-good Lord, help me.", The fallen angel steeled herself once more and braced the cold, in the distance, she spotted smoke and warm, orange lights, illuminating different kinds of houses; brick houses, houses made of cement, tall houses, small houses.

She braved through the unforgiving cold, holding her arms out, to avoid bumping into any object in her way. The weather would not cease without a fight though. The once gentle and soft descending snow came cascading in a larger scale. Eden lifts her arm to shield her face from the harsh sting of the cold powder hitting her. After slogging through the blizzard, she reaches a tall, oak tree near the silent streets and manages a weak, shaky smile. As she leans against the hard, itchy, trunk of the great oak tree, her breathing started to slow and she fades in and out of consciousness. As Eden's bright blue eyes start to roll back and she loses her sense of touch, a familiar, almost welcoming face enters her line of sight, frantically running towards her. Her surroundings meld together into a dizzy mess and fade into numbingly frigid darkness.

Eden's eyes groggily flutter open and she starts to regain her senses. As she looks through her luscious eyelashes, she can clearly tell that she was in a room. The decor and the overall theme of the room made her uncomfortable. There was a lack of colors--only black and white. The former angel hugs the warm, white, blanket covering her as she notices the silver doorknob turn and a tall man enters the room. Her vision is still quite blurry from just waking up but she can already make out his striking features; his ruby eyes, complimenting his swept jet black hair, his angular facial features, making him look like a Greek statue.

"How are you feeling?"

Eden flushes a bright red, warmth filling her cheeks. She hastily ducks under the covers to see if she was still naked.

"Ah, I asked the maid to clothe you. Pardon my intrusion but what were you doing out in the cold without clothes?"

The man who she had been seeing in her dreams for ages was right there in front of her. Eden's eyes nervously dart around the room. "What do I tell him? I can't just tell him that I was sent down from heaven! He'll think that I'm delusional," she thought to herself. The attractive stranger's expression softened. "It's alright. What's important is that you're safe, miss-?" A wave of heat rushed through Eden's body. With her heart thrumming against her chest, she mustered all her strength to answer. "I am Eden. I'm uh- a shepherd's daughter. I have been traveling but a bear destroyed all my belongings and tore my clothes." She gulps, awaiting the man's response. "Lucian. The pleasure is all mine, madam.", he says with a sly fox-like grin.

"Sir, I apologize for being so abrupt but I must leave. There is an urgent business that I must attend to.", Eden hurriedly says as she scrambles off of the plush bed where she lied but before she could get the chance to cross the room, the dark-haired gentleman gingerly catches her arm. "Wh-what-", the once-angel could barely form any words once Lucian puts his hand on her arm, giving her the feeling of electric sparks between them.

"I-I'm sorry," Lucian noticeably loses his composure once his skin touched Eden's. "Wouldn't it be wiser to wait until the blizzard passes, fair lady?", he continues after he composes himself.

"Oh, please, you flatter me so! Please just call me by my name. You seem genuinely nice, Sir L-Lucian.", she says as she warily gazes at the fine man's hand on her slim arm. "I suppose that you're right but where can I spend the night? I don't have anywhere to stay.."

Lucian gently lets go of her hand and gazes into her light blue eyes, enchanted. "Well, you can use this spare room unless..?" He gazes intensely into Eden's eyes, his fiery eyes igniting a flame deep within her. Her cheeks become as red as a tomato. She shuffles in her place, messing with the buttons of the nightgown that she's wearing, and shivers under his gaze. "U-unless what?", her teeth are chattering from anxiety, her heart is beating faster and faster. What has this stranger done to her? It's as if she were under a spell. The man's interesting eyes were all that she could focus on and before she knew it, his soft lips grazed against hers, teasing her, but she wanted more. Eden was torn. she could hear what her creator forbade her to do, that if she went further than this if she were to give in to her desires; "There would be dire consequences," that was all she was thinking about but Lucian's sweet kiss became hungrier, he wanted more. As the voice in her head was getting louder and louder, she abruptly snapped and pushed Lucian back, creating a space between the pair. Lucian's hair became ruffled from the exchange they had so he quickly fixed it again.

"I'm so sorry," he said as he gathered his bearings. "I got a little carried away."

Eden collected herself and tried to calm her nerves. "Can...can I stay in this room, Sir Lucian?"

He shyly grinned at her. "Of course you can." The tall man hesitates for a moment. "But do you think you could forgive me? We just met and I kissed you."

All Eden did was sweetly nod. Lucian understood that she wanted space and left the room awkwardly. After the whirlwind of emotion that she just experienced, she rested in the large, white bed in the guest room, spending the night all alone with her thoughts racing.

This is my first time publicly sharing my work! It may seem like a romantic novel from the start but I assure you that everything will veer to the opposite direction in the next few chapters.
