Chapter 3: Would it be a sin to ask for coffee after a strange occurence?

Not far from the apothecary shop, the three young delinquents are crossing the silent streets of Thivia, looking for a place to stay. Morgana holds up the vial she stole up close to her eyes, silently observing the shiny liquid.

Sneaking up behind her, Owain queries about the contents of the tiny bottle. "What sorta medicine is that eh? Can you even trust that guy?" He wanders for a moment. "I'm not going to lie but he seemed... well, how do I say this politely?" Reaching into his back pocket, he pulls out a flask and takes a swig. "-strange"

Elric stays silent, clearly dealing with his own train of thought. Morgana shuffles closer to Owain, eyeing the metal flask in his hands. She swiftly swipes the container and takes a quick sip. Caught off guard, Owain chuckles. "That's a pretty pungent alcohol, you'll regret taking even a small sip." A wry smile forms on Owain's as the elven girl spits out the stifling liquid.

"Yuck!" Morgana wipes at her mouth. Noticing her dismay, Elric politely hands her a clean, white handkerchief. "Thanks." She plucks it out of his outstretched hand and wipes at the golden liquid dripping from her chin.

Owain just snickers. "So, about that vial?"

Morgana picks at a small pebble on the sidewalk. "It's a potent potion that's supposed to help with insomnia."

His expressions softening, Owain inquires, "You have trouble sleeping or something?"

Shaking the purple, shimmery liquid in the tiny glass bottle, Morgana replies. "No, it's uh-" Her eyes meet Elric's light blue eye and she stops herself. A moment of hesitation happens as she reads his stoic expression. He holds up his left hand and touches the gauze wrapped around his head while maintaining eye contact. Morgana swallows hard. "I mean, yeah. The night's been getting longer, no?"

"I suppose.", nods Owain as he stops walking and sits on the curb beside a tall metal lamppost. Morgana leans on the cold, copper lamppost, watching the contents of the vial swirl around.

He pats the space next to him, wanting Elric to sit. "Both of you would like to know what got me-" he shoots an apologetic half-smile to the dark-haired boy, as he continues. "-and technically Elric into trouble?"

Morgana coolly brushes off her scarlet red hair covering her face. "What is it? You sure made father angry." She chuckles softly. "If he sent out an entire squadron, it must be important."

"I was just dragged into the mess.", retorts Elric, pursing his lips.

Owain bats his hands, "Yeah, yeah, whatever."

He pulls out an oddly familiar-looking pendant from his hefty backpack.

Entranced, Elric gazes at the ruby red gemstone hanging down low from the golden chain. A sparkle forms in his right eye. It was as if all his surroundings have melted away and all he could see was the brilliant red gemstone of the pendant.

Holding the ruby pendant, Owain begins speaking. "I don't know how, but when I first laid my eyes on this necklace, I felt like it was connected to mine." Using his left hand, he holds out his own pendant. Crested on the dead center sat a blue sapphire. Upon doing so, both gemstones glow even brighter than the sun. Morgana lowers her hood to protect her eyes from the glowing rays that both pendants are exuding. Miraculously, the two young boys didn't seem to be affected by the harsh rays of light.

"What is this, Owain? Why is it glowing like that?!", asks Elric. He cups the left side of his face, shrieking in pain. "Argh, Even though my left eye is covered with bandages, it's somehow burning it!" With his right eye wide open he holds up his sleeve to the left side of his face and covers himself. "But my right eye doesn't seem to be affected."

"I-I don't know! The light's even brighter now that I have both of them out at the same time."

"Owain, stop it! Put one of them away.", demands Morgana who is tightly clutching her jacket's hood, trying her best to conceal her eyes.

Owain hastily returns the red jewel into its place in his pocket and slumps back down on the curb. "I'm sorry,"

Brushing at his navy sleeves, Elric hung his head low and circled around aimlessly. "It- what was that?" He looked down at the frowning Owain and sighed. "It was no problem."

"Really? I thought it hurt you so much. Does it still hurt?"

"It no longer hurts but I'd feel better with some coffee." Lifting his head, he puckers his lips outwards towards a bright convenience store. The flickering LED and its soft buzzing provided a more than welcome ambiance. There wasn't really anyone up at this hour. "-And, I think it was meant to do that."

Morgana, keeping her hood in front of her crimson locks, hummed a slow tune. "Yeah, that was weird but why don't we just head in for coffee." She raised her eyebrows at Elric and shook the glass vial with her wrist. "Let's get going, fellas!"
