Chapter 3: Chapter 3 -The Trees-

I wait by the swings just on the border of the trees, waiting for Jack and Tomas to come. I didn't feel certain that this was going to go well. I mean, what if this was a set up for some fresh meat? What they wanted me on one of their teams? I just had so many thoughts running through my head, it was hard to keep them down. I sigh and see Jack and Tomas coming my way, arguing like always. I chew my bottom lip, still having a lot of unanswered questions made my head spin. "So, are we doing this or what?" Jack says rubbing his hands together. I sigh and nod. I turn and head for the trees.

As I reach the border between the trees and the rest of the playground. I didn't know if I wanted to do this. But I had to find out who gave me this note. I looked back at Jack and Tomas. They were just looking into the trees. Tomas had that face that a toddler makes when their parents check the closet for monsters. Jack had an interesting look on his face.

"You don't have to go in if you don't want to, guys," I say, "you can always turn back now."

Jack and Tomas looked at me. I could see Tomas was really debating on running away versus going into the Trees with a little chance we would get beat up or robbed.

"Dude, we said we would go, now let's go," Jack says pushing past me and walking across the border. I honestly expected sirens or a net trap, but nothing happened. Kids only crossed the border on dares, not willingly. I was also surprised we didn't draw attention to ourselves from the other kids. I went next, stepping over, my heart pounding out of my chest.

Jack and I looked back at Tomas who was breathing heavily. He squeezed his eyes shut and walked over. Jack grinned, "Let's go meet the Random Person."

We walked around for a few minutes before we actually saw people. They were in a huddle passing something around, it didn't smell pleasant. It smelt like wild skunk and burning wood. We tried walking quietly past them. Not wanting to gain their attention. Crack! Tomas stepped on a branch. Jack and I looked at him with wide eyes.

Tomas, his eyes wide, holding his breath, turned his head slowly to the group. They didn't seem to notice. We all took a deep breath and kept ongoing. We didn't know where we were going, we just knew we needed to keep going forward.

I unfolded the note and looked at the message again. This time I noticed something, I didn't notice before, there was a little arrow. I turned the note over and saw a drawing of a tree. The tree was thick and split into two longer limbs.

"Hey, guys," I whisper, "look." Tomas and Jack look at the picture for a minute. "You, don't think," Tomas pauses. He looks around the trees like he was looking for something. Jack smiles and claps his hands, "That's where we're going, Mike, that's our directions."

I started looking around for the tree that looked like the drawing. We looked for about 4 minutes. We walked until we saw a clearing. Leaves, paper, and beer cans littered the ground. Along with cigarettes and other little wrappings.

"Hey, I think I found it!" Jack says. He points to a tall tree in the middle of the clearing. The tree was thick and sprouted into two longer branches going separate ways, like a Y. We walked to the tree slowly.

"Hello?" I yelled. Tomas, Jack, and I walked closer to the tree. Big mistake. It happened so fast, one minute we were on the ground, the next, in a net. We were dangling in the net, about 16 feet off the ground. I look all around to see if there was anyone that could help.

After a couple of seconds, Tomas started freaking out. "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god! We are all going to die! I knew you would lead me to my death, Mike Daniels! I knew it!" he started ranting about other things, but something else caught my attention.

Standing by a tree, just looking up at us was Bobby Cloverfield. He stood tilting his head to the left, just staring like we were animals at a zoo.

"Guys," I whisper, "Guys, down there." They look and see him, too. Jack's eyes got wide and Tomas caught quiet. "Hey!" Jack yells. Bobby just stands there. Not saying a word, not blinking. Just standing there looking up at us.

"Hey, can you get us down from here?" Tomas yells. I knew why he was there. I knew why he wasn't moving. This was a trap, a trap set by him. This was a setup. Somebody had given me this note, knowing that I would find who gave me this letter. I had fallen for the trap.

"What do you want?" I finally yell. Tomas and Jack look at me and then back at Bobby. "We followed your note, what now?" Bobby walked slowly to the tree. He closed his eyes and breathed hard. He looked up at us, "I just want to be safe." He says with a shaky voice. I furrow my eyebrows in confusion.

"Safe? Why wouldn't you be safe?" I asked. Bobby started to climb the tree. I looked down at the ground. If he cut the rope that was keeping us in the air, we would have a hard fall. A bad fall. We watched as he climbed to our level. He stared at all of us for a while.

"Who are you," he asked, "What's your name?" I realized he wasn't talking to me anymore, he was talking to Jack and Tomas. "That's Jack Renson," I said pointing to Jack, "and that's Tomas Martin." Tomas slightly waved. Bobby squinted at them both and then at me. "Why would you come?" He asked. I raised my eyebrows. Why would I come? I don't know because the note said to. I wanted to yell at him to let us down, but I didn't want to make him mad. I gulped and took out the note.

"Because of this." I handed him the note. He took it and read it about 6 times. He looked up at me.

"Who gave you this?" I shrugged and looked around me. Bobby looked around with a worried look on his face.

"What hour did you get this?"

I stuttered, "4th, History. The hit was thrown from behind me, hit the back of my neck, why?" He swore and reached for something in his pocket. He pulled out a pocket knife, and Tomas started freaking out again.

"Oh, no! I knew this was going to happen, HE,-" Jack covered Tomas's mouth to keep him quiet. "Shut up!" Bobby whisper shouted. He grabbed the net and started cutting a hole big enough to crawl out of.

Crack! Crunch! Bobby looked out into the trees and starting to cut faster. "Their coming!" He finished the hole and pulled us all out. We shimmied down the tree and landed on the ground. "Run for the border! Don't look back or else, take this, just in case," He handed me his pocket knife, "Now run!" I turned around and began to run through the trees.

I heard crunching and twigs snapping behind me. I just kept running. My heart was racing faster and faster. I looked to my right and saw Jack sprinting. He just kept looking ahead like he knew that if he stopped, he might be done for. I looked to my left expecting to see Tomas, he wasn't there.

I then looked behind me, he wasn't there either. I slowed, Jack still sprinting. "Jack!" I yell, "Tomas!" Jack looks behind him and slows. He is breathing heavily. "Where is he? Where's Tomas." He asks running towards me. "Was he not follo,-" Right before Jack could finish his sentence, we hear a loud spine chilling scream.

"TOMAS!" We both shout and begin to run towards the noise.
