Chapter 4: Chapter 04: “School Camp.”
At 5 am, a lot of students gathered at the bus station. Today is the day where the students went on a school camping. Shen Xiaofan already checked her belongings twice and the items she should bring in case there is some accident. Wei Xiu watched over her as usual, she kept smiling behind Shen Xiaofan. However, Wei Xiu didn't realize that one of Shen Xiaofan's classmates had been looking at her. The girl wore glasses and there were freckles over her nose. She wanted to approach Shen Xiaofan to tell her that something is following her. However, she had no idea how to talk to her. They may be classmates but they certainly weren't sweethearts. The two barely talk with each other, in fact, they have never had any conversation at all.
On the other hand, Shen Xiaofan entered the bus with Song Ehuang, the two sat on the same chair. Song Ehuang brought her candid camera and took a picture of Shen Xiaofan. However, there was a black mist next to Shen Xiaofan. Song Ehuang thought it was just a cloud of dust and ignored it. Meanwhile, Wei Xiu happily stood next to Shen Xiaofan, she finally could take a picture together with Shen Xiaofan. When the entourage had finally arrived at the forest entrance. Song Ehuang pulled Shen Xiaofan along with her, this kind of act made Wei Xiu feel agitated. However, Song Ehuang was Shen Xiaofan's best friend. Therefore, she didn't lay a finger on her, and just swallowed her jealousy. After arranging the tent, the students began to clean the area under the teacher's instructions. Shen Xiaofan was busy pulling the wild grass nearby, Hou Yang, her childhood friend approached her.
"Xiaofan, do you want any help? I've done my part and got nothing to do.",
"Sure, please pull the grass over there.",
Hou Yang obediently went to the area where Shen Xiaofan pointed. This young man had always helped Shen Xiaofan, and got jealous if another boy approached her. Their relationship could be pretty close, however, they didn't seem to see each other that way. Wei Xiu watched the two of them pulling the wild grass around, although she felt jealous, even if she's a human, she refused to do this kind of work. Wei Xiu is the kind of woman who hates to get dirty. Hence, she could just watch the two of them quietly.
In two hours, the students managed to clean their camp's area. The teacher gave them 30 minutes for them to rest. Shen Xiaofan sat at the center on a log, she felt that her back ached a bit. Wei Xiu noticed that Shen Xiaofan's back was aching, she used her spells to relieve Shen Xiaofan's back pain. Shen Xiaofan could feel her back pain slowly disappear, then, a girl wearing glasses with blonde long hair approached her with, "Shen Xiaofan, do you have another rubber? Mine had disappeared somewhere.",
Shen Xiaofan knew this girl, she was an exchange student from America named Emily Chen. Rumors said that she's half-Chinese, now that Shen Xiaofan got the chance to have a better look at her, it is true. Although her hair is blonde, but her face and eye colors were like an Asian.
"Sure, here you go.",
"Thanks… say, can I call you Xiaofan?",
"Uh… sure? You're Emily Chen, right?",
The two of them began to chit-chat like casual friends. Emily Chen could notice that Wei Xiu, the dreaded ghost was jealous. At an angle where Shen Xiaofan couldn't see, Emily Chen cast a talisman to pin down the ghost. Surprisingly, it worked quite well, Wei Xiu couldn't break free from the barrier that Emily Chen cast. Then, Emily Chen brought Shen Xiaofan together with her to the other classmates. They continued their camp activities, leaving Wei Xiu trapped in an open space. Luckily, Luo Bojing also followed the student to the camp. He spotted Wei Xiu who got trapped by a talisman and removed it. Luo Bojing is a hundred years old ghost, so his ability is far stronger than that of Wei Xiu. Wei Xiu told him what had happened, and Luo Bojing comprehended it pretty well.
"Basically, you have a rival, hahaha!",
"Oh, shut it, old man. She was more cunning than I thought.",
"I think it's best if you leave that kid alone. Or you might meet with a ghost hunter.",
Wei Xiu knew that she could be in danger if she didn't stop following Shen Xiaofan. She knew that Shen Xiaofan is a kid who is scared of ghosts, and it will only be a burden for her if she continues to follow her. However, Wei Xiu is a selfish woman. She didn't care and continued following her, even appearing in Shen Xiaofan's dream a few times. Now that she had learned about someone like Emily Chen, it actually scares her that if she did meet with the real ghost hunter. In the end, Wei Xiu dejectedly agreed upon Luo Bojing's warning. She tried her best to stay far away from Shen Xiaofan. However, she spotted an evil ghost who seemed to be following Shen Xiaofan. She didn't understand why there are so many evil creatures who love to follow her. Wei Xiu didn't realize she had included herself among the evil creatures. Wei Xiu was about to drive away the evil spirits, however, Emily Chen was already there and used her talisman against the evil creatures. Alas, it doesn't seem to be working. Emily Chen's action had angered the evil spirits even more and began to attack her through the air pressure. As a junior ghost hunter, Emily Chen felt suffocated. Even Shen Xiaofan, who was oblivious to what's going on around her, had noticed there was something wrong with the atmosphere. She couldn't tell what but she could just feel it. The two of them were alone near a big old tree. It was evening, the seniors had prepared a bravery game, by having two students paired up, explored the directed area while they disguise themselves as ghosts. It was a common game prepared as a pre-welcome party for the first-year students.
"Emily… Do you feel… the air had changed?",
"...Yes… Xiaofan, actually I had been meaning to tell you something.",
"...What is it?",
Before Emily Chen could speak, the evil spirits were about to attack Shen Xiaofan. Emily Chen couldn't do anything, and then… Wei Xiu appeared before her and protected Shen Xiaofan from the evil spirits. Wei Xiu was angry because the evil spirits wanted to take Shen Xiaofan's soul and make her theirs. It was really dangerous and she almost lost her second love. Feeling agitated, Wei Xiu added more power into her attacks and exterminated the evil spirits for good. Wei Xiu threw a glare at Emily Chen and said, "I thought you could protect her…", then, she disappeared.
With this, Emily Chen realized she was too arrogant and blind. Not all ghosts were evil and cruel, some just wanted to live their life, or protect someone. Shen Xiaofan, who was scared earlier, has returned to normal. She knew there was something wrong in the woods earlier, yet, she refused to say it.
"Emily, what did you want to say earlier?",
"Ah, right… Xiaofan, actually…", Emily Chen stopped for a moment, then she smiled and said, "You have a guardian spirit following you."
