Chapter 6: Chapter 06: “Worry For You.”
The incident at the camp stressed out Shen Xiaofan. It's been a few days since the incident, and Shen Xiaofan doesn't have Wei Xiu's contact, they're still strangers after all. Shen Xiaofan also couldn't explain what kind of relationship did she have with Wei Xiu. However, she's sure about one thing, that is she did feel distressed for Wei Xiu. She didn't know if Wei Xiu could make it out of the forest or not. There hasn't been news about a missing person either, which means she didn't go missing, right?
"Hey, what's wrong? You looked like the grumpy nanny in my neighborhood.", Song Ehuang teased and took Shen Xiaofan's french fries, it's lunchtime at their school now.
"Stop disrespecting Lao Qi, she's a good person.",
"--And a bit wrong in the head.", Song Ehuang added as she took another french fries.
Shen Xiaofan slapped Song Ehuang's hand and hurriedly ate her lunch. Song Ehuang pouted and took a tissue from her pocket.
"I won't steal any more of your fries, just eat leisurely." Song Ehuang wiped Shen Xiaofan's mouth like a good mother.
Wei Xiu who had been watching all the time got pissed off by these two closeness. She was just happy that Shen Xiaofan is still worried about her wellbeing, but this friend of hers butted in and ruined the mood. Especially that act just now, who is she? Her girlfriend?
"Say, you haven't answered my question.",
"Remember the adult I told you back at the camping? I met her in the forest, she was lost, I was hoping the two of us would go back together. However, somehow she went back to the forest and… hasn't come out since then.",
"So, you're worried about her?",
"More or less.", Shen Xiaofan shrugged as she put back her lunchbox into her bag. She spent the rest of the day as usual, except today she had a cleaning duty with Hou Yang. Shen Xiaofan had been waiting for him, yet he hasn't appeared yet. She tried to look for him at the gymnastic building. Suddenly, while looking at the empty gymnasium room, she is reminded about Wei Xiu who had cried here months ago. Once again, Shen Xiaofan was reminded of Wei Xiu. She had been thinking about her all day long, yet there was nothing she could do to ask about her wellbeing.
"It's really distressing.",
"You're right.", Hou Yang suddenly said.
Hou Yang appeared out of nowhere behind Shen Xiaofan and surprised her. Shen Xiaofan had no idea what it was for, but she decided not to ask.
"Anyway, today's our cleaning duty. Come on.",
"Yeah, that confession just now didn't mean much. Let's go.",
"Hold on, what confession?",
"Huh?", Hou Yang twitched his head adorably and asked, "Didn't you find out about the female upperclassman who confessed to me earlier?",
"Excuse me?",
"Huh?",
The two were confused, in the end, they both felt awkward and just walked back to their classroom. On the other hand, Wei Xiu laughed really hard at those two. Shen Xiaofan was thinking about her all day long, but this stupid handsome boy thinks it was him. As a fellow rival, she sure is happy.
"What are you laughing so hard about?", Luo Bojing showed up while holding a book with his spiritual energy.
"Huh? Bojing, weren't you reading a book at the library on the second floor?",
"Your laugh was so loud that it bothers me who was on the upper floor. Now, tell me, is there anything interesting?",
"No, it's just.. I feel so lucky today.", Wei Xiu grinned, her pearly teeth were shown, she who looked dignified and beautiful now is looking silly.
"Is it about your girlfriend again?", Luo Bojing said.
Wei Xiu fell silent and flushed, she and Shen Xiaofan had yet reached into that kind of relationship yet. Although, Wei Xiu sometimes had an illusion that Shen Xiaofan was hers. But for others to mention it out loud is embarrassing.
After doing her duty, Shen Xiaofan went home together with Hou Yang. The two were talking about random things as usual, except they didn't know there were two ghosts following them out of boredom.
"It's rare for you to be following Shen Xiaofan.",
"I want to see what's so interesting about this girl. Is she worthwhile?",
"Very, and she's mine.",
"Can she see you?",
"...No.",
"Then, it means no one has yet to claim her.", Luo Bojing chuckled and flew ahead. Hearing such things from Luo Bojing had pissed Wei Xiu, yet, she didn't dare to be Luo Bojing's enemies. After all, he was her savior and teacher. But what if he was serious about making Shen Xiaofan his?
Wei Xiu couldn't imagine fighting her own best friend over Shen Xiaofan. If Luo Bojing likes it, she thinks it was fine to give Shen Xiaofan to him. However, the thought of Shen Xiaofan being happy with him, or someone else had made her feel like being pricked by a knife in her heart.
After Shen Xiaofan and Hou Yang parted ways, she feels wanting to get fresh air. There was no piano lesson today, so she might as well go to the convenience store to buy soft drinks. On the way to the convenience store, Shen Xiaofan passed by an old woman who wore a dark robe and wore weird pieces of jewelry.
"Young miss, do you feel troubled these days?", she asked.
Shen Xiaofan was surprised by the sudden question and answered honestly, "I am indeed troubled with something these past few days. But, how did you know?",
"Young miss, please come to my shop. I have something to tell you privately.",
The old woman left no room to argue, she immediately walked away without paying any heed to Shen Xiaofan. Shen Xiaofan was confused and suspicious, how could she just follow a stranger?
What if this is an alibi to kidnap her?
Shen Xiaofan was debating with herself inside her mind, in the end, curiosity got the better of her. She followed the old woman and arrived at a humble house. Though the place was a bit narrow, it has a soothing aura, one that makes you comfortable at home.
"Young miss, please take a seat in this humble house.",
"Thank you. So, what do you want to tell me?",
The old woman prepared a tea while talking, "I'm Chang Qingge, a fortune-teller. I could see things that most humans couldn't see.", once she had poured the tea on the cup, she brought the two cups to the table and continued, "Young miss, haven't you noticed that there are two ghosts following you around?",
Shen Xiaofan almost choked her tea and managed to swallow it down. Two ghosts following her?
Could it be the ghosts at the school?
What if this old woman is just jesting around?
However, when Shen Xiaofan looked at the old woman. She couldn't detect any lies at all. She had deduced either this old woman is a professional conman or had a delusion in her head due to old age.
"You don't believe it don't you?", the old woman smiled, she went to retrieve something in the rack behind her. It was something like a bracelet with weird stones in it, she placed the bracelet on the table and said, "With this bracelet, you could see what normal humans cannot see. However, the question is… do you have the courage to see them?",
Shen Xiaofan was certain that this old woman is just like those con artists who sell accessories with supernatural power. Shen Xiaofan didn't believe it, yet looking at the old woman's house condition. She felt sorry and decided to purchase the bracelet from her.
"How much is this?",
"It's free… this old woman just wishes to protect the young miss. Because the ghosts are rather… possessive.",
Possessive? With what?
Shen Xiaofan had no idea what the old woman was talking about. She decided to just nod her head and gave today's allowance to the old granny, it was around 67 yuan. She didn't have the heart to take things for free to the old woman. The old woman knew about it and felt warm in her heart. There is still a kind youngster like Shen Xiaofan in this rough era.
"Let me read fortune-telling for you.",
"Oh, no thanks. I don't believe in such things.",
"It won't hurt if you just try, right?",
The old woman pulled Shen Xiaofan's hand and read the hand's lines. The old woman broke a sweat and didn't know how to tell about her finding. The old woman predicted that someday in the future, Shen Xiaofan will be married to an older woman. Looking at such a soft and beautiful woman like Shen Xiaofan, the old woman couldn't believe it and decided to re-read the fortune again. Alas, she still gets the same result no matter how many times she tries.
"Young miss… umm… in the future, you will be married to someone(?) who is older than you.",
"Oh, I see. Alright, thank you.",
"Young miss, one more piece of advice.",
"Yes?",
"Wear the bracelet when you are ready to 'see' them.",
"Oh, okay. Thank you, granny.",
After paying respect to the old woman, Shen Xiaofan left the house with the bracelet. She hadn't worn it yet, but she didn't believe in such things. A bracelet that could let a person see something that normal humans cannot see? Is it like an infrared camera?
Shen Xiaofan chuckled at the thought of seeing ghosts after wearing the bracelet. Shen Xiaofan didn't feel like taking a detour anymore, so she went straight home. Meanwhile, Wei Xiu had broken sweat knowing that the bracelet indeed had such spiritual power. Luo Bojing had also confirmed it, the old woman from earlier was actually a retired shaman. Shen Xiaofan was quite lucky the old woman didn't play tricks on her. However, she couldn't imagine if someday Shen Xiaofan felt like wearing the bracelet, and would be able to see them. She felt both excited and fearful, yet at the same time, waiting for those days to happen...
