Chapter 6: The Day I Died (2)

Something is wrong.

Even if it is dark, the manor shouldn't be this quiet. Wasn't there also supposed to be one demon slayer alive, how come I haven't heard him at all? Could he be unconscious?

I've also noticed that I haven't seen any of the other demon slayer's kasugai crows. They are usually very timid so they don't join the fights, but at least they are loyal enough to wait by their masters' side, dead or alive.

It seems the others have noticed it too. Everyone seems unusually depressing today, myself included.

I want to go back to the mansion to patch up clothes and let someone else take over, but I know that's impossible.

The Kakushi received strict orders to come and lend their aid to a fellow member, and if we were to turn tail and abandon him just because we were scared, we would surely be punished harshly.

Those dammed crows, if only they would show up instead of scaring everyone by hiding.

I really am not cut out for fieldwork. After this, I think I'll apply to serve at the Butterfly Manor instead. Ubuyashiki-sama will surely accept my request, he is a very kind leader. He took me in when no one else wanted to. Unlike everyone else, he didn't believe I was cursed.

Yosh!

Let's try a bit harder today, and then transfer in the morning, for his sake.

As we followed the traces of battle between the demon slayers and the demons, we came upon quite a few broken doors, blood trails, and broken furniture, however we haven't seen any bodies just yet.

It seems they all died in the same room, poor guy. He's probably in the same room as his dead comrades too wounded to do anything.

Coming upon the last room in the manor, Konuma pauses for a second as he grips the door tightly. We all take a deep breath. Deep down we all know that behind those doors is a sight straight from hell's landscape, and it's our job to collect the bodies and tend to the wounded.

Once a couple of seconds had passed, Konuma yanks the door, and just as you would expect, the room is filled with blood, twisted limbs, and chunks of the demon slayer's guts. They probably got hit so hard, they must've coughed out a piece of their lung or part of their stomach.

It is not unusual in their line of work. Sometimes the injury is so great that they never make a full recovery, and they either retire or join the Kakushi subdivision.

Konuma went inside and we promptly followed after him, however he stopped after a few steps.

I looked around the room and started counting the bodies. one, two, three, four, when I reached the number five I took a short pause as well.

There were three mangled bodies on the floor, too disfigured to even recognize any of them, however the demon slayer uniform was enough to identify them as allies. Unfortunately, that wasn't the worst thing I saw.

Two bodies were standing up, or rather one person was holding the other by their throat.

Wearing a set of light blue robes, I saw my second demon ever. His fingernails were long and sharp. His hair messily strewn about his forehead, as thick veins popped out of his forehead like giant earthworms.

In his hand, he was holding the last unaccounted-for demon slayer.

The man looked no older than 25, but in a demon's hand, he was no different than a child. I could see the sweat on his forehead as he turned to us and whimpered.

"I'm so sorry."

Tears and snot were flooding his faces, as he was getting choked by the demon. Whether that apology was meant for us, his dead allies, or the demon I'll never truly know.

*Snap!*

I've never heard a more disturbing sound, than the one that was made when the demon snapped his neck.

I flinched. If I couldn't feel my heart threatening to burst out of my chest I would've thought that was my own neck that he snapped. That was also the moment that I realized this was a trap.

I was angry at the demon for setting up a trap using another human's life.

I was angry at the demon slayers for dragging us all with him.

But I was also angry at myself for freezing up and staying still like an idiot while everyone else ran away. This is the second time in my life I've ever felt so useless.

I should've ran with the others the moment we spotted it, but I didn't.

The demon let go of the man and he fell onto the wooden floor making a loud thumping noise. He turned to me and flashed a crazed and happy grin.

He was mad, but he was also happy.

Happy that his trap worked.

Happy that tonight he will eat not only 5 demon slayers but also a couple of their helpers as a desert.

I moved my hand to draw my katana. Members of the Kakushi aren't usually assigned one, and I am no exception. I commissioned a blacksmith to make this for me. While it may not be able to kill a demon, having it by my side gives me a greater sense of security.

Before I could fully unsheathe it the demon disappeared from my vision, and I flew back into the next room breaking the wall on my way in.

IT HURTS!!!!!!

It hurts! It hurts! It hurts! It hurts! It hurts so much!

I felt as though I had been repeatedly kicked on the stomach by a horse. I've also never before felt my bones break more clearly before.

*Gahhhh*

As soon as I landed I clutched my stomach, turned to the side, and spat out a mouthful of blood. I think I punctured my lung, it feels as though I'm breathing fire instead of air.

After a couple of seconds of spitting out my blood, I reached for my bag, I had to do something or I was gonna die.

Unfortunately for me, the demon wasn't going to allow me to do that.

I could vaguely see a silhouette flash by as the demon appeared next to me. He raised his leg and brought it down on my arm violently.

*Crack*

"AAAAHHHHH!"

This time I screamed.

The demon looked at me in disdain. He turned to the bag at my waist and kicked it aside as he yanked the sword off my hip.

"Pest. Do you think an inferior being like you can harm me?"

*Ptuh*

He looked directly at me and spat.

"Your kind frustrates me, always running away, always having to chase after them. You stay here while I go catch the others. "

He took my sword and stabbed it cleanly through my leg and the floor. I screamed again, but no one would hear me. My allies are already either dead or they ran away, no one would turn back for me.

The demon turned and left the room, but it didn't matter. My arm and ribs were broken, my lung was punctured, and my leg was pierced through. Even if my bag wasn't kicked away, there is no way I would survive tonight. I should've never gone out today.

I could feel my eyes burn. Tears were leaking out from the corner of my eyes.

I didn't want to die.

I wanted to live.

I wanted to go back to my village and marry.

I wanted to pass my days with my wife and kids going out to the fields or into the forest to teach them how to hunt and make small traps.

I wanted.... dammit!

I don't care anymore.

I'm too tired.

Father, Mother I'm sorry. It seems I'll be joining you soon. I'm sorry that I couldn't live the life you wanted me to live but maybe this is for the best.

I closed my eyes for the last time. I could feel my heart slow down as all the blood left my body. It was slow and painful but strangely enough, I've never felt more at peace.
