Chapter 5: Misgivings

~What is faith? What is trust?~

She stared at her meal but she didn't see anything, Sarah was lost in her thoughts.

'Was it really true, what Judy had said about her?'

She couldn't help but wonder.

She shook her head, she didn't want to think about it now. She just wanted to enjoy her meal.

She looked up and saw Judy, it looked as if she was battling with her food. She couldn't help but smile. She looked past her and froze when she saw the CEO, she looked around and saw that she was not the only one that had noticed him.

Those who did greet respectfully. It looked like he was headed somewhere but paused to speak with one of the employees. She wondered why he was always stoic, she wondered if it was all a front to command respect or...?

Her thoughts went blank from there. She continued her meal, enjoying it, savouring it. She couldn't remember the last time she ate something this good.

"Excuse me, Miss Anderson?" She heard someone say. Her head jacked up staring at said person.

"This is she, how may I help you?"

Now that she observed his face, wasn't this the man Mr Snow was speaking with a few minutes ago?

"Mr Snow requests you meet him outside." She was surprised but hid it with a smile.

She thanked the man and he left.

"Judy, I have to go." Judy just nodded her head haven heard her quick dialogue with the man.

"You better hurry." Judy smiled.

Sarah nodded and scurried off.

Soon enough she was outside, she saw a beautiful, expensive-looking black car. She didn't know the make, she wasn't very good with cars.

She saw a man she guessed to be the driver approach her.

"Miss Anderson?"

"Yes?"

"Mr Snow requests you join him in the car."

Her heartbeat sped up in anxiety, she didn't know what to expect.

The driver opened the passenger door for her and gracelessly, she entered.

She swallowed hard as the door closed.

"Good afternoon sir." She greeted, her lungs in her throat.

She turned her head to the left and noticed he was on his apple tab tapping away.

The car started moving.

"How are you, Miss Anderson?" He asked without looking up from his tab.

"Excellent sir."

When he didn't say anything else for a while she got more nervous. She didn't know why he requested she come to meet him and she wasn't about to ask, it would seem rude, so she waited.

"Do you have your phone with you?" He asked suddenly.

She quickly checked her small purse she took with her, thankfully, she found her phone.

"I do sir."

"Check your messages." So she did.

Her eyes widened. There were two messages from him.

Sender: Mr Snow

Time: 1:29pm

Miss Anderson, I need you to be at my office by 1:55, you are to accompany me to a charity for the orphanage home, take your notebook with you.

Sender: Mr Snow

Time: 1:56pm

Where are you?

Dread filled her insides, she hadn't known, she hadn't even heard the sound notification.

She checked her phone volume, it was at 15%.

'No!'

That's why she hadn't heard. She turned to explain to him but he chose that exact moment to speak.

"Why weren't you at my office Miss Anderson?"

Since she'd been in the car he hadn't looked at her once, his eyes and fingers were still focused on the tab in his hand. His calmness and the low tone was unnerving.

She didn't know what to say, she knew her excuse was weak. She wanted to smack herself for already messing up and it was only just her first day! So instead she apologized.

"I'm so sorry sir." She couldn't tell if he was angry or not, not even with his tone.

She willed herself to stop fidgeting.

He straightened and turned to her, his bottle-green eyes standing out.

"What did I say about responding to my messages on time Miss Anderson?" His voice levelled, face stoic.

The answer to his question rang loud and clear in her head.

"I'm so sorry sir, it won't happen again." She said. She didn't want to lose her job, no, not on the first day.

"We're going to be late because of you Miss Anderson." His eyebrows furrowed a bit, it was barely noticeable.

She cringed at the statement.

"You are aware I don't like being late...to anything."

She knew.

"I'm aware sir, I'm so sorry." He looked into her eyes and she wondered what was going through his mind.

He looked away.

"Don't repeat it." He focused his attention back to his tab.

"Yes sir." She whispered.

The car was silent a long while after that. She resorted to staring out the window at the skyscrapers they passed by but soon, her mind was quickly engrossed by something else or rather someone else.

She chanced a look at her boss, very discreetly, of course, he was still on his tab completely oblivious to everything else. She turned her head back to the window.

She sighed inwardly.

'Lord, please help me get through today in one piece.' She prayed silently in her mind.

She didn't know much, or anything in fact, about her boss. He seemed like the calm type and his employees seem to respect him, a lot.

She wondered how old he was, he didn't look a day over 25, but that's just her guess.

She was curious about him, and very much so.

He was generous, that much she knew. The kindness he showed her by giving her free lunch meals and the fact that they were headed to a charity for the orphanage home was completely unexpected and incredibly kind but she wouldn't draw any conclusion about him yet.

She felt the car stop.

"Sir we're here." She heard the driver say.
