Chapter 3: Chapter Three

After some time she jolted awake with a scream, her breathing heavy. She clutched at her chest and her eyes were swollen from crying so much.

“Y-Yuki...” She muttered to herself as she pulled her knees into her chest and leaned against the cold bars of the cage. She buried her head into her knees as a whimper escaped her lips. Macavity winced some as he went to check on her. He felt bad for the red headed girl. She didn’t deserve this...and neither did he when it came down to it. He glanced towards Peter as he grumbled in his sleep, his coat hung off his shoulders as he shifted in his sleep.

Taking the opportunity, Macavity hurried over to him quietly, using the stealing skills he had been taught to slip up along his side and slide his hand into the pocket he knew that Peter kept the keys in. He bit his lip a little as he grabbed them quietly and hurried over to the cage. He froze when he heard her sniffle though her eyes were still lowered and not really paying attention to her surroundings.

Sighing out quietly, he unlocked the cage and slipped in bravely. At hearing the cage creak open, Haruno felt her blood run cold as she snapped her bleary eyes up. They were puffy and red from her crying and she could feel her heart in her throat still. As he crept in, her eyes never left him as she watched his every movement. Macavity paused as he noticed her watching him an lifted a finger to his lips

“Shh...it’s alright I’m not going to hurt you...” He said in a hushed tone as he moved to sit in front of Haruno. Haruno creased her brows a little at his words as he settled down cross legged, tensing a little as he got closer “What do you want?” She asked gripping her arms.

He took a breath and looked down to their feet a little thinking of a way to phrase his next words “You...shouldn’t be alone. Not after what happened. Besides your screams could get you punished.” He admitted trying not to sound pushy to her since she had shown she wanted to be left alone. Haruno cringed internally at being reminded of her family’s death and looked away to avoid his gaze some as to avoid breaking down in front of Macavity again...or anyone for that matter.

“My sister and mother...they were the only family I had. My father left when I was born so I never got to know him...” She said in a quiet voice “So now...I’m alone...” Her voice cracked with her last words, tears threatening to spill down her red cheeks. Macavity reached out and touched her arm some in a comforting way “Well you won’t lose me. I truly want to be your friend Haruno.” He said softly. Haruno wiped her eyes a little as she looked back towards his hand on her arm before meeting his gaze. To her it was soft and gentle but could she really trust she wouldn’t lose him? Or even that he wanted to be her friend?

“But why would you want to be my friend? I’m a freak...” She mumbled.

“I don’t see a freak. I see a kid, like me, who doesn’t have anything in this world.” He said in a matter-of-fact tone as he held her gaze without hesitation. Haruno wiped her eyes again to prevent her from crying as she looked down with her next words “Was...your family killed too?”

He shook his head some “I don’t actually know. I grew up in an orphanage but ran away when they picked me up...”

“Oh, I’m sorry.” She said tucking her face into her knees again to hide. He reached out to touch her shoulder a bit an offered a soft smile to reassure her “Dont be. I’m the one who should be upset. You actually knew family...though what they did to them was horrible.” She flinched a little as he touched her shoulder but she didn’t shrug him off.

“Yuki...she was just human. She didn’t deserve to die.” Her voice quivered as she closed her eyes. Her hair fell around her face as she felt her tears stain her knees again. “One day we’ll make them pay. I promise.” Macavity said his voice more of a growl than anything. For some reason seeing her upset still angered him. It made him want to hurt Peter but he knew right now there was nothing he could really do without risking her life as well.

Though when Haruno spoke she already sounded defeated “I don’t see how...”

“I’ve been learning how they fight and plan things. I could probably sabotage them somehow.” he said as he tapped his chin a little, moving in to sit next to her glancing at Peter a few times while he slept. She lifted her gaze to follow his before looking to him some.

“But what about your dragon friend or whatever. The one who attacked us...” She asked. He bit his lip a little and looked down a bit “I don’t know...I’ll think of something I swear.” Haruno studied his face some before giving a small nod and looking down again as well.

“I just wish things were different.” She mumbled out loud enough for him to hear.

“Me too. I can’t promise being free will be the best but I’m going to try and make it happen. Not just for me but for you too.” He said with confidence in his voice as he turned to look at her now. Haruno nodded as she rubbed her eyes some, a wave of tiredness hitting her. She leaned down and rested her head against the cold metal of the floor of the cage “If not its ok...i wouldn’t want you to get in trouble for someone like me.”

He watched her as he adjusted the cloak he had given her so that it covered her fully “Then...do you want me to leave?” He asked quietly. She hesitated a moment then shook her head “N-no...” she admitted to him, letting him adjust the cloak. She wriggled her fingers up into the corner of the cape and balled her fingers up as she closed her eyes. Macavity smiled as he shifted to lay next to her "I won't leave till you tell me to then."

She smiled a little, reaching out to touch him with trembling fingers "Thank you.." She whispered out to him. He held still as he felt her touch and glanced over to her some "You're welcome Haruno...you should smile more, its pretty." She blushed deeply as she adverted her eyes a little embarrassed

"My sister's was nicer..." She said as she closed her eyes and rolled her back to him. He smiled still as he watched her a bit longer "Good night Haruno." he whispered before falling asleep himself. Haruno muttered back in her sleep good night though as she drifted off her dreams that came weren't so peaceful.

It was several hours later that she felt ice cold water on her. She sat up with a screech, shivering as the wind hit her cold soaked body. Haruno rubbed her arms as she looked up to the cruel face of Peter.

"Wakey wakey..." He sneered as he turned to get everything ready. Macavity gasped as the water hit him too and got up quickly "Peter that wasn't cool!" He complained as he watched the other male as he prepared to leave.

"Well next time don't get all cuddly with that creature...or you'll start getting treated like a slave." Macavity growled and got out of the cage, balling his fists up some ready to defend Haruno.

"She's not a creature, she's a person too!" he growled out.

"Mac, just be quiet for once and let it go..." a new voice reached Macavity's ears. He groaned some and looked back seeing Bill, Peter's partner, walk up into the campsite they had made for the night. Peter rolled his eyes some as he glanced to Macavity "Yea I'll believe that when pigs fly.." He said laughing as he looked back to what he was doing. Haruno trembled violently as she tried to warm back up and get dry. Bill sighed as he picked up a pile of clothes and tossed it at her before covering the cage with a tarp to give her some privacy while he got himself some breakfast. Looking at the clothes then to Bill, Haruno felt confused by his actions and why he would help her. But deciding to not look a gift horse in the mouth she grabbed the clothes and quickly changed into them so that she could discard her wet clothes.

Bill remained silent as he pulled out a cigarette, lighting it up and letting his gaze drift over to Peter with somewhat cold eyes before eating on his food. He couldnt understand why his partner was acting like this. Sure it wasn't really the first time he acted out like this...it just surprised him a bit when he did. He watched Peter shoulder their hunting rifle and head into the woods. Ever since he had joined the group the higher ups seemed to make Peter worse "Peter!" Bill called out after him "Dont go gun crazy!" he hollered, looking sad. He knew that if Peter hadnt been messed up, he would have been appalled for killing the mother and sister of their current prisoner.

"Yea I hear ya!" Peter yelled back, glancing back to Bill. There had been a day that he had loved Bill...and he probably still did. It just was now buried under a psychotic break.
