Chapter 44: Trembling

"Chen Kaori!" He Zifeng shouted when it sank into his mind what happened. He dashed towards her and held her. Cold sweat ran through his entire body. "Kaori..." he instinctively shook her lightly, trying to wake her up.

"Call an ambulance!" a stranger blurted out.

Some passerby dialled the emergency number on his phone to make the call.

"No, no...no, don't! Don't leave me like this! You can't die, Chen Kaori..." He Zifeng looked like he was going to lose it. His voice cracked through the tears. His words were heavy, but it was not loud, almost only whispering to the woman in his arms.

"Zifeng-ge..." the woman in flashy clothes whom Chen Kaori pushed away from danger turned out to be Wang Zihan. After getting up from the pavement, she slowly moved towards them limping.

Wang Zihan was shocked to see the woman who saved her, but was even more shocked that the cold man she knows was trembling and crying in the middle of the street, blood covering his clothes and skin, as he held the woman in his arms.

Wang Zihan turned her back from the scene, took deep breaths, and then dialled her assistant. "Xiao Qiu, send for an ambulance. I'm in..."

Several minutes later, the rescue ambulance arrived and took the victims to the nearest trauma hospital.

He Zifeng looked dreadful as he sat on a bench outside of the operating room. Several doctors and nurses attended to Chen Kaori briefly at the emergency department, then they rushed her out and into the operating theater. He Zifeng absent-mindedly signed waivers for treatment and the operation. He did not even hear the questions the nurses asked and just nodded his head, including the one about his relationship with the patient. He only wanted them to save her.

.

Wang Zihan came in a wheelchair to check on him. She sprained her ankle and had few bruises and abrasions. She wanted to comfort him, but his eyes were like void of sight. She tapped her phone to dial Assistant Jiang, whom she knew after a few collaborations.

Assistant Jiang just finished his shower when his phone rang. "What? What happened to him?!" he paused to listen to the caller. "I will be there as soon as I can!"

.

Assistant Jiang arrived at the hospital panting. Wang Zihan led him to where his boss was, but she left for her private room soon after.

Assistant Jiang approached his boss slowly.

He Zifeng was not moving, and was staring blankly on the floor. He sat on the waiting bench elbows on his thighs, with hands clasped together tightly.

Assistant Jiang saw that the operating room light at the door was still on and wondered how long will Chen Kaori be inside. He kinda felt guilty that he made an opportunity for his boss to chase after her. 'Did she get into an accident because the boss was chasing her?'

Wang Zihan's voice was trembling over the phone and could not explain much. She just told Assistant Jiang that Chen Kaori was in an accident and that He Zifeng took her to the hospital. Wang Zihan did not even explain her own injuries.

Assistant Jiang contemplated on calling Chen Kaori's family. However, only his boss was familiar with them. He looked at the man on the bench again.

He Zifeng looked like he is not in the mood to talk.

Assistant Jiang paced as he tried to think again. 'Technically, Chen Kaori works for Blink Advertising now...should I call...Bei Yang?' he glanced at the man on the bench again, then shook his head hard to dismiss the thought.

He Zifeng's emotions were unstable at that moment. Getting Bei Yang to come is like luring a deer into a tiger's den.
