Chapter 33: Legacy

The day after Artemis left, I felt a little lost. I knew that she would have to leave eventually, I just couldn't get rid of that thought from my head. 'What if...' Before I got more absorbed into my thoughts I called Evan into my room.

Back then mother had only taught us sword arts, but she never really taught us anything other than that. The thing is, my mother's family only learns spells and they would find cultivation arts here and there, there were no complete manual after the fall of cultivators. There were inheritances but, only the strongest ones of them survived. The other cultivators started to lose their inheritances after several millennia.

None of the books that mother's family had were usable for me and Evan. We cultivate swords not spells. Somehow, even though mother was the strongest woman in her family, we couldn't find a suitable technique. The technique we used to gather qi is an old one found in a ruin of some old sect called the Cosmic Energy Assimilation Arts, which only helps us gather qi from the stars. We can barely cultivate using minor spells so father had to find us some inheritances that was floating around in space. She sealed the inheritances into our necklaces so that we may take the trials set by the old cultivators when we grow strong enough.

Today, I decided to take the trial after reaching a bottleneck in my cultivation. A part of the reason was to forget about the fact that Artemis left me. You know we have been together for a few days but at the very least I knew I had liked her.

"Alex, you called for me?" I heard Evan coming in snapping me from my thoughts.

"Yea, come sit" I told him

"What is it?" He asked me

"When can we get our first orbital space station built? We started this project for a year already."

"We can get it done by today"

"Good"

We became quiet for a while

"Alex-"

"Evan, I'm going to try to take the trial" I suddenly said

"Today?" He looked at me in surprise

"mmm" I nodded

"You're still thinking about her aren't you?'

I didn't respond

"You should know why she left"

"I do" I told him "She didn't want to abandon the hunters" I sighed

"She did it to protect you" He said "She didn't want the hunters to come after you for revenge"

"I don't think they can beat me" I shook my head

"Then what about his brother Apollo?" he asked "We all know that even if he fights with Artemis a lot, he still protects her"

I paused

"Alex, you take your responsibilities way too seriously" he sighed

"I know" I told him "Which is why I'm going to take the trial and sort through my thoughts while I'm at it."

"You should know we don't know what kind of trials there are right?" he said after a while

"I'm willing to take the risk."

Seeing that he could not dissuade me, he got up and left the room. Before he left he said "Alex, go tell the girls first. They are worried"

"No, I don't want them to be more worried about me"

"I hope you know what you are doing" he sighed before closing the door

I stared into space for a second before unsealing the inheritance on my neck and inserted my qi into it.

When I opened my eyes again I found myself inside the thing.

"It's been so many years, I have almost given up on finding a successor"

I looked for the origin of the voice. "Are you the master who created this inheritance?"

"Yes child, welcome to the trial space I left behind for my successors who would inherit my legacy"

I continued to look around. "Wait, I thought this was an inheritance, not a legacy."

"Well who told you that?"

"My parents"

"...." The voice was silent for a while "Cough. Is my White Dragon Island still there?"

"White Dragon Island?" I asked confused

"Sigh. judging from your voice I can tell that it's probably no longer there or you live somewhere far away"

"I don't know about any White Dragon Sect but my parents did tell me that most of the cultivators have already lost all their inheritances hundreds of thousands of years after the world have exploded."

"Forget it then if you don't know" he sighed "Lets get to the trials then, also you can call me White"

"Your first trial is to defeat an enemy an entire realm above you."

"Wait, AN ENTIRE REALM?" I shouted

"Yes, unfortunately you are currently in the Immortal Realm so your opponent is going to be in the Golden Immortal Realm"

I paused "Alright bring it on" I sighed

A man in armor stood in front of me with a sword.

I slashed out the moment it appeared 'I must attack first if I want to win' I thought to myself as I slashed forwards

The man dodged and stabbed at me, unleashing a cultivation technique.

'Sh*t' I was hit and fell backwards, coughing up blood in the process

"Why didn't you use a cultivation technique" White asked"

"I don't have one" I said embarrassedly

"HOW CAN YOU BE A CULTIVATOR WITHOUT ONE?" he shouted

"Most cultivators have already perished and other families have their inheritances cut off" I reminded him

"Forget it" he sighed "Here" he tossed me a manual

"I'll only break the rules for you this one time" he told me as I held the manual "You only have one hour"

I quickly sat down on the ground and started to cultivate according to the manual. It made be do all sorts of weird positions and channel my energy all over the place. An hour passed by quickly and I barely finished learning the second move.

"Brat, you're quite talented to learn the second move in an hour" White nodded in approval

"It's luck" I scratched my head and gave the manual

"Keep the manual" he waved his hands "Alright, time to do the first trial again"
