Chapter 2: Chapter 1
Laquetta sighed. The words were not entering her mind, her mind wasn't soaking up any of the information. Who invented simultaneous equations? Who invented maths? Who was interested enough to make maths a subject?
Laquetta's mind was turning fuzzy, she was going into a daze, she was thankful that the teacher wasn't looking her way, they were scolding a student. Laquetta thinks his name was Vincent, he was smart, he got good grades all across the board but he never listens to the teacher. He was every teacher's worst nightmare. She looked at the clock that hung on the wall at the back of the classroom, it read 11:00. Laquetta started unconsciously started tapping her pencil on the table, drawing irritated glares from some of her nearby table partners.
Laquetta stared at the screen, quickly jotting down some of the main points from the PowerPoint and snapped her book shut, shoved her pencil into her pencil case. The minutes passed slowly. Agonizingly slow.
Laquetta jumped up when the teacher dismissed the class, and she made a beeline to the small cubby-holes the classes bags. Grabbing her stuff and then stuffing them into her backpack she ran out of the classroom and into the near-empty corridor. Laquetta was hungry, she wanted to get to the hashbrowns first. Although it was food from the canteen and they are normally mediocre at best, the hashbrowns were amazing. Well, to Laquetta anyways.
After a few turns she in front of the cafeteria and pushed on through the crowd of older students, ignoring their curses at her. She let out a sigh when she was finally snuggled within the queue. Groaning internally at the wait. When Laquetta was finally out of the queue, she ran up the stairs to the maths block and sat on the sill of one of the windows, looking around at the old display of previous students.
Laquetta felt quite content, she wasn't going to be disturbed here because no one was going to come up to the maths block at recess. They were all in the North Playground or on the field.
Laquetta slapped herself internally, as hard as she could, because she spoke too soon, the sound of footsteps came up the stairs. She didn't turn around to see who it was.
"Hey. You're the girl from my maths class."
"Oh, hey. You're the boy from my maths class," Laquetta remarked snarkily.
"Haha," came the dry laugh.
"What do you want?" asked Laquetta.
"I came to find a quiet place to sit."
"So did I."
She watched as Vincent sat down next to her, he looked at her out of the corner of his eye.
"What is your name?" he asked.
"Laquetta."
"Sounds nice."
"Thank you."
They sat in silence and ate their snacks in peace until another series of footsteps came up the stairs.
"Hey. You're in our space. Move it," came a gruff voice.
William and Laquetta looked over, Laquetta got ready to go as she had already finished her hashbrown. She was ready to leave William behind when she was pulled back by one of the older boys.
"Hey! Let go of me!"
A blur whizzed past her and a shout of pain sounded from one of the older boys.
"Don't touch her."
"What? Is she your girlfriend?" said one of the boys with a sneer on his face.
"No. I'm just a decent human being. And being a decent human means that I don't hit girls!" snarled Vincent.
Laquetta watches in shock as Vincent took down the boys without lifting a finger. She just watched them get intimidated by someone who has just entered high school.
Laquetta let Vincent drag her to her next class, which was Music. She was just in another daze throughout music class.
And here she thought that her high school days were going to be peaceful. Laquetta sighed, she spoke too soon as she noticed she was at the centre of attention.
