Chapter 1: Chapter 1 - Day in the City

The cool autumn air filled the carriage as Lady Lillian Lowe allowed the horseman to take her into town. She wore her favorite brown fur coat which made her golden eyes stand out more.

Humans were so oblivious to others on the street. They had yet to realize that there were people not of their kind walking amongst them. Maybe it was for the best as they would definitely not treat the other kinds well. They could barely keep from killing each other so how could anyone think peace would happen between the different kinds? At least Lillian could hide amongst them for now and enjoy a peaceful life.

The carriage stopped at the new department store in town. The driver opened the carriage door and helped her down onto the busy street.

The town had a sort of vibrant energy with all the different kinds of people walking around. Lillian was so excited to be out and about with new people that knew nothing of her past. The manor was so stuffy and the weather had forced her to stay inside for the past week with only the staff and her adopted family as company.

She looked at the different displays set up in the elaborate and large windows for something to buy. Her benefactor had given her the allowance early so she wanted to get him something nice in return. He was obsessed with his research, something to pull his attention away long enough to enjoy the riches he acquired was needed, she figured.

As she passed through the rows of clothes she felt like someone was watching her. She looked around and found the eyes of a sales woman. Interested in making a sale, she began chatting with Lillian almost as soon as their eyes met. She led her to the more popular department with lots of trendy things. Lillian tried to protest but her wishes to simply be left alone fell on deaf ears.

While they passed through the seemingly endless options, she found a marvelous new invention among the silly chiming clocks and the bicycles. The display said it was a gramophone and it could play sound that had been recorded on a disk. How delightful! He was sure to love it!

The gramophone cost her whole allowance so the day out shopping was cut short by lack of funds. She walked out of the crowded store with her purchase in hand pretending to struggle with it. The driver saw her and took the heavy contraption. He helped her into the carriage and placed the device on the floor before closing the door. Once secured they were off on their journey back to the manor house.

~~~
Lillian's curiosity got the better of her and she looked over the purchase as the carriage rolled through the woods. It was a shiny noise making machine and she was curious about how it worked. The carriage lurched to a stop suddenly causing her to hit her head against the hard metal of the machine. She cursed the stupid driver in her head. How hard was it to steer the horses on a straight path?
She looked out the carriage window to see a pair of golden eyes staring right back at her. They belonged to a big gray wolf who had stopped the carriage from continuing its path. The driver yelled at it to move but the wolf refused and continued staring right at her. The horses were spooked already by the wolf and hearing the yelling from the driver, they galloped away almost running over the wolf. The horses flew at top speed towards the manor as she held on for dear life as she was tossed around inside the carriage.
A few bruises were the least of her worries at the moment, though. Her heart was pounding as she couldn't unsee those gold eyes. That wasn't a regular wolf- that was a werewolf.
~~~

The werewolf hadn't shown itself again in the past three weeks so it had to move on by now. At least that's what she told herself. Staying in the manor any longer was going to drive her insane. She had to get out but the uneasy feeling she had since the encounter hadn't gone away so she decided it was best to stay near the manor for the time being.

She rode her horse out along the grounds of the manor. She was lost in thought about her marriage candidates as she let the horse simply walk around where it pleased. So many choices but none were really worthy of her time. Humans were so boring and stupid; thinking material things were going to win her affection. She had returned many things gifted to her with the intention of wooing her with trinkets.

She was so preoccupied that she didn't notice the gray wolf that was in her path till it was too late. The horse bucked frightened by the sudden appearance of a predator and she felt herself falling out of the saddle. She braced for impact on the hard ground but instead she felt a warm embrace. She opened her eyes and saw those golden eyes once again staring at her. Though now they belonged to a smartly dressed muscular man instead of a wolf. Her heart stopped and she felt her body go cold. There was absolutely no way for her to defend against a fully trained werewolf. She couldn't just stay and do nothing though, she gave him a strong shove away from her. Her horse was long gone but if she could alert the nearby guards, maybe she stood a chance to live another day.

Her sudden shove caught him off guard and he loosened his grip. It was enough for her to run away. She was so glad to have worn riding pants instead of her unruly dress. She ran to the manor where the guards were already alerted thanks to her frightened horse.

"A strange man attacked me!" She yelled as they came into view and off they went to find the intruder.

Lillian's benefactor came to the door hearing the commotion and saw her looking rather disheveled. He looked over the open field, seeing nothing, and narrowed his eyes.

"Child, inside. Now," he ordered, forcing her back into the manor house.

---

He watched her run away from him again. His heart hurt so badly. Why did she run away?

When he saw her in the city he was absolutely mesmerized by her. Long brown hair that fell to her waist, neatly pinned back so her face was visible. Those golden eyes that our kind had. And that lovely dress that made her figure stand out. The stupid coat only hid her figure and got in the way of her beauty.

Not only was she beautiful but smart too! She bought that new noise making machine so she must have known how to use human technology. His heart was calling to her and he knew he had found his mate.

He smelled humans coming and decided to take his leave for now. One day he would talk with her.
