Chapter 2: Blue Skies Alone| 1

"Aubrey, come inside it's getting cold out there!" My Aunt yelled from inside the house.

"Coming!" I responded. As I sat on the rocking chair in the porch, I thought of what my mother and father were like.

I never knew them but Brenda said that if they were still alive, they would have showered me with so much love.

My dad was a soldier in the US army and my mom was an Elementary school teacher. They met when one of my dad's friend's daughter was having this recital and my dad decided to tag along.

My mom was grooming the little girls for their performance when my dad and his friend entered.

I have no idea what happened after that but they soon began to see each other then fell in love and then my dad had to go back to his station.

I guess they conceived me before he had to go then six months into my mom's pregnancy, she was informed that my father had died.

It tore her up to be honest and three months later, whilst she was giving birth to me, she died. Sigh.

I got off the rocking chair and entered the house to find Brenda taking something delicious out of the oven.

"Set the table up for me sweetie would you?" She asked of me and I nodded. I finished setting up the table and I helped her bring the food. After that, we set everything up and dug in.

"Tomorrow's your first day in school after the summer." Brenda reminded me.

"Oh yeah. I forgot about that." I told her the honest truth and she rolled her eyes playfully at me.

"Of course you did but get ready because you're not missing the first day of school." She said and I sighed heavily.

"Can't I, just for once? School's a whole lot of work, I don't wanna go." I whined but I knew she wouldn't budge.

"No. You're going tomorrow and that's that. If anyone dares to bully you or say anything hurtful, I'll make sure they don't walk for days." She said, causing me laugh.

Brenda and I are super tight. Well, mostly because she raised me but she's the most fun person in the world. She's bold and kind and brave and I wish I was more like her.

I'm more of the boring, once in a while sarcastic type. Yeah, I know. Sucks donkey ass.

"I'll tell you if it comes to that." I assure her. We finish our meal and I help her with the dishes. We watch a movie together before I head on up to bed.

I hate school but I have to go anyway. This being my last year in high school is gonna great. I'll continue to be the invisible girl throughout the whole year and life will be much more simple. Right?
