Chapter 2: 2. The calm before the storm

Once we were on the road everything was calm with a light breeze and a drizzle, mother was driving a little under the speed limit which was 60mph she was going 50mph and driving careful as to not spook the roan more. After about 30 minutes of driving the wind started to pick up and it started to rain harder and I saw lightning in the distance. After about 10 more minutes we hear a load BANG and some crackle and lights in the sky, I jumped at the thunder and lightning. Behind us in the trailer we could hear the roan neighing and kicking the side of the trailer, he to got spooked by the thunder and lightning of the storm. My mother put her hand on mine that was in my lap and looked at me " it will be okay Rachel, it is just a storm there is nothing to be afraid of" I looked at her and smiled knowing she is right there is nothing yo be afraid of. I am 15 years old, a sophomore in high school I shouldn't be afraid of some thunderstorm. Mother removed her hand and put it back on the steering wheel and put her focus back on the road ahead. we were about an hour drive from home, and the storm seems to be getting worse. I'm looking out the window watching and then out of nowhere a tree was stuck by lightning and landed right in front of us, mother pressed the breaks and we went off the road, mother looked at me and I looked at her in a split second, then we were rolling down the ditch and I hit my head hard on something and then darkness.
