Chapter 45: Hunting Experience

Arriving at the river, the group sat down and waited patiently as Roy crafted each of them a canteen, and a small lunch box to use as a food container later on.

All three of them had backpacks, Roy's being his original, while the other two were crafted from the giant boar.

"All done! After we fill these up, let's head up river, but keep an eye out for animals. We need to get food, and Inbellis is getting close to evolving." Roy explained the next steps they would take as he filled his own canteen, before screwing the cap on.

'God, this is so cool! Being able to craft whatever I want. Man, I really want to learn metal spells and see if I can create combo spells with them to enhance my creations even further!' As Roy imagined the amazing things he hoped to do in the future, Solus tapped his shoulder, pulling him out of his dreamland.

"Let's go, Roy. Hahaha!" Solus laughed, as she watched Roy snap back to reality with a surprised expression.

"Ah, yeah, right, let's go!" Roy stood up and walked off with a reddened face.

"Every time he thinks about making something, he makes that face." Solus spoke under her breath as she chuckled and followed behind.

Terren, once again enjoying the show, was walking right next to Solus as they ventured up the river.

...

Hours later, the group began to feel peckish, so they decided to head into the forest to look for a meal.

"So far, me and Solus have just been getting by with assassination skills. Can you show us how to properly hunt, Terren?" Roy asked, his eyes glowing with excitement.

"Uh, yeah sure! Just to let you know, I'm not nearly as good as my dad. I will try to teach you to the best of my abilities though." Terren then sat down and slowly explained the basics of hunting game.

"Patience, sometimes it can take ages for game to approach if you are staking out. Quiet, any noise can spook the game, allowing it to escape. You guys have the [Apprentice Assassination] skill so I'm sure you are fine on that one. Next is alertness; depending on the game, it could be life threatening to attack it. There could be a far bigger, far stronger one of its kind nearby." Terren paused to make sure that last tip thoroughly sunk in.

"Pay attention to the ground, for example over there." Terren then pointed to a small trail a bit deeper into the forest. "That is a game trail. If you see one of those, it means that is a common place for game to pass through. If we waited nearby, we would eventually find some passing by."

"Is that what we are going to do?" Roy asked, as he surveyed the land.

"I think it would be the best choice. The trail looks relatively small, and I can see hoof-prints, so it probably belongs to a arruuoo creature." Terren spoke her thoughts, while Roy intently listened. He then translated to the best of his abilities to Solus, who nodded her head in agreement.

"It's settled then, let's find a good place to set up and stake out. I would ask Solus to try out the bow, but she hasn't practiced it much." Roy gave a side eye to Solus, who looked away quickly, knowing full well she has been ignoring training the last couple days so she could practice [Mana Manipulation] and learn to read.

"Well, at least you are enjoying what you're doing. I won't keep on your case, just please practice your skills a bit so that you don't get stuck in a dangerous situation." Roy pat Solus' head and walked over to the spot they would stake out at.

The location was a bit off the trail, and covered in bushes. Perfectly hidden within, the group waited for their meal to show up.

...

*Rustle*

*Crunch*

After around an hour of waiting, a creature slowly appeared on the trail. It was tall, slender, and elegant. Giant antlers protruded from its head, nearly making Roy drool with greed. Its long hooved legs gallantly strutted through the trail. Keeping its eyes on the lookout for predators, it eventually approached the spot where the trail was closest to the group.

[Irish Elk]

Lv. 13

Notes:

Unlike what its name implies the Irish Elk is actually one of the biggest species of deer to exist without needing a Mana Heart.

Before Roy and Solus could pounce upon it, Terren stopped them. She slowly put her finger to her mouth and then pointed behind the deer creature. Following behind were two others that seemed to be fawns.

After seeing them, Roy almost immediately lost his appetite. Sadly, he knew that he needed to eat though, and that this might be the only opportunity today.

Seeing his eyes waver, then become steadfast, Terren nodded in satisfaction and pointed to the two of them.

After signaling to ignore the two fawn and to target the mother, Roy and Solus looked at each other.

'I'll have her explain after.' Roy then slowly crept forward and transformed his hand and forearm into a giant tri-knife. As they arrived near the fawn, the trio dashed forward and lunged straight at the mother, swinging down with all their might.

Roy, activating [Pierce] on his arm, while the other two used [Scratch] with their gauntlets, successfully reached their target.

*Putsik*

*Slash*

*HUAAA!*

The deer released a deafening scream, before collapsing on the ground. Its two children charging off for dear life behind them.

[Irish Elk killed]

[54 EXP Received]

[Enough Experience has been accrued]

[Level up 3->4]

[Apprentice Hunting has reached the necessary requirements and has been acquired]

[Received Apprentice Hunting Lv. 1]

'Damn, not even enough for Inbellis to evolve...' Roy turned to look at Terren and ask about the fawn.

"Why did we let the fawn go after killing the mother? Won't they die anyways now that she is gone?" Terren looked at Roy for a bit, before responding to him.

"Those fawn had already finished weening, so the mother was going to send them on their way soon anyways. Also even if they do die, that isn't our concern. Hunting is about survival, we killed this to live, simple as that." Roy looked at her for a bit, before nodding his head and accepting her explanation.

"Okay I'll strip the keratin and leave the rest to Solus and you. Neither of you have the [Apprentice Dissection] skill after all." Taking the antlers, hooves, and hide, Roy sat down to mess with them, while he thought about things.

'Why would it have Irish in the name...?'
