Chapter 11: CHAPTER 10 [Confessions]
Her heart pounded drastically in her chest. How will she tell her brother about it? How will he react?
With trembling hands she knocked on the door. The door flew open and Carter stood there with a hand on his hip.
"Why are you so late?" he asked furiously. She visibly flinched from the loud voice. "And where are your keys?"
"I…umm… that… it was so much work at the office. So I got off late. And I…umm forgot to pick up the keys before leaving." She said as she rubbed her forearm nervously. She looked up when she heard carter's booming laughter echo around her.
"Why do you take everything so seriously? You need to loosen up a little sis." He said tenderly as he pulled his sister inside the house. He went on and on about his day but Evelyn was so disturbed. She quickly scampered upstairs as he told her to freshen up and come downstairs for dinner.
Her mind swiveled with different lies she could tell but she didn't ever lie to her brother. Falling face first on the bed she hid her face in her fluffy pillow and screamed loudly.
"Eve… Are you alright? I think I just heard you scream." Carters muffled voice sounded from the hallway.
"No I am fine. Just a little frustrated with office." She nibbled on his lips as she picked up her face from the pillow looking at the locked door.
"I know what you are worried about. It's ok. We will work something out. And if there is anything else you want you can tell me…. Now come down quickly I am waiting for you." She heard his retreating footsteps and stuffed her face again in her pillow
'Only if you knew…. I sold myself…. But I didn't sell my dignity.'
She splashed water on her puffy eyes. Taking a quick shower and throwing on some comfy, she descended down the stairs to join her brother for dinner. The amazing smell of meatballs and spaghetti making her mouth water.
"You know….I am your older brother." Half way through the dinner carter held her hand as he started talking. He could feel the distress her sister was going through and it was something other than their mom's health. "You trust me right?"
She nodded.
"Whatever you do I will always support you." He said as he retreated his hand from her and continued eating when she didn't reply.
As soon as they finished eating Evelyn stood up to do the dishes. Carter started drying the dishes to help her. They worked in complete silence. Her mind was jumbled but he gave her space to make up her mind.
"Ok I guess we are done now. You should sleep. Good night." he ruffled her hair tenderly as he moved to go in his room.
"Cah-can we watch a movie tonight?"
"You have office tomorrow. You would be tired."
"Please." She pleaded as she nervously played with her fingers.
"As you wish." He shrugged as he changed his direction and now settled on the couch turning the television on.
"What do you want to watch?"
"Umm…anything?"
"Ok what about … The Willoughbys?"
"Mhm….I'll get the blankets."
As she brought the blankets he started the movie. The both sat in comfortable silence watching the movie but Evelyn's mind was not even there. Finally picking up the courage she decided to tell him.
"Carter." She called him and he looked at his side to see Evelyn looking at him with disturbed eyes.
"Hmm?"
"What will you do if I say…? I love someone?" she said with a light blush adoring her cheeks.
"Hmm… I would say…. Who would love you? An ugly duckling! He must be blind?" he snickered as he pulled her hair.
"Not funny." She swatted his hands away with a frown on her face.
"Come on sis….tell me who fell in love with you? Did you get your first boyfriend?" he pulled her in a headlock.
"I um…. Not boyfriend but….ummm."
"Aww. You got a crush on someone? It's ok…. Sometimes you get a crush on people and they do not return your feelings. Just think they didn't deserve your love and move on. I know it's hard since it would be your first time falling in love but -"
"CARTER! I do not have a crush on anyone." She said with hot red cheeks.
"Oh. Then what is it?" he asked with mild confusion.
"I… umm… someone….did….someone proposed me today..." she rapped while hiding her face in her hands. Carter didn't quite catch what she said as her voice was muffled by her hands.
"What did you say?" he tugged her hands away from her face.
"Someone proposed me today." She said as her cheeks burned red.
"WHAT? Wow! Did you say yes? When will you introduce him to me? Is he good looking? Where did you meet him?" Carter bombarded her with million questions.
"Carter! Take a break." She lightly giggled. Whatever it was but it wasn't this reaction she expected from him. He was excited.
"You're….good with this?"
"Yes why won't I? It's the first time I have seen you genuinely happy and so in love so yes I am good with this. Now answer me. Did he ask you to be his girlfriend?"
"Well…. He… he asked me to marry him." she said in a quiet voice as fiddled with the tussle on the cushion.
"MARRY?" His eyes widened in shock.
"Yes…"
"Is he crazy? How many days have known him?" he asked bewildered.
"Less than a week I guess." She shrugged
"Less than a week and he wants to marry you?"
"Mhm."
"What did you say?"
"I …um….I-I said yes."
"YOU SAID WHAT?"
"He's a good man Carter I know that. I am sure when you meet him you will also like him. I know you are worried about me. But sometimes one glance is enough to judge their personality." And she did judge him. She did not want anything to do with him but she had to.
"If you think he's the man the… who am I to say anything? But I would see him myself Ok?" He said pulling her in a side hug like an over protective brother. Movie long forgotten as it still ran in the back ground.
"Ofcourse.Thank you so much."
"So when is the wedding?"
'Uh Oh'
"Um mm… I have no … idea…. I got so flustered….so umm… I gave him no time to speak….I accepted his proposal….and ran away." She fluently lied through her teeth.
'I have to discuss about the wedding with him. I did not even think about this part at all.'
"You are such an awkward potato." He snickered. "But tell me… Who is the guy? His name?" he pressed.
"Travis. Travis Harrison." She said while closing her eyes.
"You mean your boss's son?"
"Umm… yeah!" she giggled nervously while moving away from him.
"Do you realize what kind of a man he is." He growled.
"I… I know." She looked down in shame. "But he is a better man. He is nothing like how he is pegged on the news and magazine."
"But still….Evelyn." he warned her.
"I know what I am getting in to. As a matter of fact he always tell people he is a womanizer but not…. A player. He never play with someone's feelings. If he is making this big decision of marriage, he might be trying to change himself and if I am the person he needs for this cause I am willing to be the one because I .... I lo-love him." she breathed out. She almost gagged confessing the love for the person she hates the most.
"You are too good for this world Eve… so naïve. But if he is your happiness then I have no say in this. I … I am happy for you." Saying that he pulled her closer to him.
"Mom would be so happy when we tell her that." He replied longingly. "We will visit her tomorrow and tell her about your fiancé. Maybe we should take him there as well."
'Only if you knew Carter. Only if you knew the truth. I am so sorry for deceiving you." A deceitful tear rolled down her cheek as she snuggled close to her brother.
'We all begin in innocence but we end up guilty. A good person is always honest no matter how bitter the truth is. Cowards hide behind lies. Maybe it's better if I become a coward for now.'
