Chapter 3: Chapter Two

Around 5:00 in the afternoon, Dimitri Kenneth began to step out of the police station. With a nullified expression, he noticed people scrambling out of his way. Along his side was a woman well known as Dr. Blanche Kenneth: his sister. There was no exchange between them. At the police station and on the ride home, it was a thick atmosphere.

Dimitri didn’t know what to say or feel. After all, this was the first time he had gotten into legal trouble. While his sister's eyes were devoid of emotion and focused on the road, he knew her long enough to know that her thoughts were contrary to that appearance. He knew what was going on in her head. Disappointment? No. Anger? No. It was…

Shock.

They arrived home and she finally stepped out of her car to let him out. Dimitri avoided any form of contact with his sister: verbal or otherwise. He walked in a true line to his house, not even bothering with closing his bedroom door behind him.

He heard his sister’s car drive away. It was basically just another reunion: a “weddings or funerals” kind of reunion. He knew that he wouldn’t see her again until another birthday or some other major event involving the family. All she has been doing was work as a guardian to him. There was no kind of frustration or strong emotions between the two of them, Dr. Kenneth was just extremely busy. Dimitri was honestly surprised that she had the time to bail him out of jail.

Now that he’d been bailed out, there was idleness and uncertainty. He had some thoughts about what to do next. Going for it, he grabbed his keys and left the house, taking a route to his favorite childhood hotspot: Wrensdale’s popular coffee shop.

The bell jingled as he stepped inside through that door, smelling the aroma of coffee beans. It broke his dull look, giving him tiny doses of bliss before stepping towards the counter. He ordered his usual: white-hot chocolate with coffee coated marshmallows and a cheese danish.

He sat down in the seat that he grew up with and waited, taking in all the good feelings of nostalgia. “Vacant,” he muttered, “Good.” The waitress called his order and he nodded, grabbing his order and walking back to his spot.

The bell rang again, and a young lady about his age stepped inside this time. She wasn't short, but she wasn't stocky either and had subtle curves. Her hair was dark and curly, reaching a little below her shoulders. She was also carrying a bag over her shoulder almost protectively.

As she passed his seat, Dimitri noticed her eyes flicker towards him briefly behind her glasses. He almost thought he saw a slight blush on her cheeks as she did it. He turned back to his drink and overheard her order: a dark roast cappuccino with cream. Not what he'd expected based on her appearance. After a few moments, she took her drink and sat down at a table across from him. He decided to focus on his drink.

“The caffeine helps me relax.”

Dimitri shot his head up to see the girl's back was turned to him, but it sounded like she was talking to him based on the tone he heard.

She turned her head partly towards him, eyeing him from the side. “I found out for myself that this place has the only coffee that can do that.”

“Well, yeah it’s the most popular place in town,” Dimitri claimed, “I don’t recognize you. Are you new in town?”

She nodded, picking up her drink, and sitting in the seat across from him. “My family just managed to move here from the city a few weeks ago,” she said, then noticed the space between them. “I hope you don't mind my sitting here.”

“I mind a little, but you seem okay,” Dimitri confirmed, “I’m just not used to people approaching me, that’s all.” With that, he made eye contact with the new girl. “I’m Dimitri.”

Her cheeks went a very slight shade of pink when their eyes met before she looked away. “I'm Sabrina,” she said after a couple of seconds, refocusing her gaze on his hands.

“Nice to meet you,” He replied, handing over a beige marshmallow. “Want one?”

She looked at it for a moment before accepting it. “Sure, and thank you.” She popped it into her mouth and her eyes lit up. “So sweet!” She exclaimed, “The coffee adds a nice little bitter texture which pairs nicely with the marshmallow's soft sweetness.”

“They’re the only coffee shop around to make these. It’s a family shop after all.” Dmitri leaned back a little, “You going to school tomorrow?”

She nodded, “I was given a grace period to settle into my new home, but it's just ended so I'm going to the public school here.”

“Ah…” Dimitri’s warmth disappeared, replaced with concern. He immediately stood up, “You can keep the bag of marshmallows if you want.” Completely dismissive, he immediately stepped out, leaving her and the shop to retreat back home.

Once Dimitri stepped back up to his house, he noticed his sister now returning. She sat on the couch, patting on an empty spot.

“Let’s talk, okay?” Dr. Kenneth suggested. With a nod, Keith dejectedly sat down. The incident that happened during school was eating away at her. “I want to know what happened.”

“Are you disappointed?”

“I’m proud. My brother is finally deciding to stand up for himself. This girl that you defended, did you like her?”

Dimitri shook his head no.

“Okay. I believe you,” Dr. Kenneth affirmed, “Your mother may not agree with me, but I admire your bravery.”

“Bravery? I handicapped him,” Dimitri defended, “What would you say if I killed him, give me an award?”

“Well, you hurt someone, you had consequences. I’m not proud of how you did it, just why you did it,” She replied, “Look. Something’s wrong nowadays. Birds are starting to peck at glass.”

“So?”

“Birds can’t see glass,” she explained, “They only peck around Wrensdale, no other birds do anywhere else. I checked near the corners of the cities. It’s only here.”

“I’m sure it’s nothing,” Dimitri told her, trying to reassure his sister.

“I’m sure it’s just a brand new evolutionary trait,” his sister theorized, “but I’m staying here for the week to make sure. I hope you have a good night Dimitri.”

“Yes. Good night.” Dimitri replied.

With this, at 8:00 at night, Dimitri slid out of his clothing. Too lazy to put on anything else, he decided to cozy up to a blanket in bed, and sleep.
