Chapter 28: Chapter 28

I've been sleeping over at Nyree's home for two days now, and drove to school at a earlier time to study in study hall before breakfast starts.

The staff there have already grew accustomed to my visits and stays. I was a regular in coming to study for an hour or so-they see me as their own kid sometimes.

I was studying for my end-of-the-year exam and my quiz, my brain was getting fried just looking at my textbooks and study guides. I rested my chin on my palm as I highlighted important details, and wrote them down in my notebook. I wasn't the most organized person when taking notes, but my notes are wrote down how I can learn better.

Melanin and I write our notes differently, her notes are in the Cornell Method, while mines are in the mapping method and sometimes the charting method. I barely use the methods to jot down my notes during class faster and easier, but when I get home I rewrite them to be neater.

The end-of-the-year exam is in different types of tests;

The straight A's students, like me, take the honors exam to raise our chances of getting into a university.

The honor roll students, like Melanin and Lauren, take semi-honors-which is almost the same but their questions aren't as hard as ours.

The rest of the students take the regular globally assigned exam, and the students that score the highest on their exam will receive hoodie or participate in a pizza party.

Depends how the school feels or wants to do.

Last time I took the honor's exam and scored the highest, I attended a movie night slash party party with some other students, but I didn't care for the movie at all and zoned out the entire time.

Now that i'm going into my last year of high school, i'll be not only getting a new uniform, but more applications to fill out for my universities or colleges. I already know what university i'm going to-Beach University.

It's near the beach, which makes the name make sense somewhat, and they allow students to live off campus and take classes online.

That's my dream university.

Speaking of dreams, I never thought about what I actually want to do once I graduate.

Should I go back to art? But I forgot how to even draw by now. I could ask Lauren to teach me, but she might fuss over how lost I am in it again.

"I could sing or model..." I mumbled as I write down a term and meaning. "Can I even sing or model?"

I never sung in front of people before, well not seriously anyway, I usually goof around and sing like a pigeon along with the lyrics.

The only song I know I take seriously is my mother's lullaby that I weirdly sing a lot while studying or showering. She's the one that got me into french, but she barely told me why she did love it. All I know is that she sung around me to calm me down a lot.

"I'm no model, ha, I barely even know how to dress." I muttered while circling a passage to review.

I wish I could model, but the amount of experience I have is playing dress up with Melanin and Lexie. That was when we was younger though.

"If only I had a talent to show off." I tapped the eraser part of my mechanical pencil against my book.

It was six in the morning, and my first thoughts in the morning are about my future and career. Should I worry about it right now? I mean...I have until next year to think about it.

Then again, it is important to organize your life beforehand to have a better chance at achieving your goals and dreams.

"Ugh." I leaned back into my chair and crossed my arms over my chest. "I can't seem to get my mind cleared. I need a break."

I put my mechanical pencil on the notebook and stood up out my seat. I walked over to the bookshelves to look for a book on my lesson. I eyed the numbers to find the correct section, and once I found it I squatted to search the shelves better.

"Good morning Shawn, how is your college course going?" I heard one of the staff say.

I peek to see if it was really Shawn, and to my surprise-it was.

Shawn yawned and shrugged. "Just the same boring old shit, I don't know why they placed me in it."

"They did that because your grades are exceptional." the staff member said.

"Isn't that something smarter people like Dani should take?"

"Dani wants to attend Beach University, there is no need for her to take the course."

"Hmm..." Shawn shoved his hands into his uniform pants pockets. "I'm jealous of her smartness."

"Why?"

"The only reason I pick on her and tease her constantly is because-I am just a douche-bag who is jealous of her being better. I might be immature and act like a piece of shit, but really i'm just wearing a tough mask to hide my wimpy personality."

"What about that perverted side of yours that the staff purposely ignores?" She said with a hint of sternness in her tone. Clearly, she's tired of getting write ups about Shawn's shit.

"I'm a guy, what do you expect?" Shawn scuffs. "Chicks have big breasts and i'm just running on wild hormones. Did you expect more from me or something?"

"Shawn." Her voice turned serious. She took off her reading glasses and folded them. "I'm going to say this with the intention of sending a message into that thick skull of yours. I understand your a teenager boy with hormones, and you make mistakes for personal reasons, but this school is globally known for academic achieving students with a future ahead of them. We do not need you walking around this school thinking of co-noodling with one of our female students. Get that shameless act together before we decide to expell you."

Shawn groaned. "You sound like my sister."

"Good, now get to the cafeteria before you're late."

"It's not like I have to go for a grade."

"But you need to go to eat, don't you?"

"Fine, fine, i'm going." Shawn takes one of his hands out of his uniform pockets and waves. "By the way, tell Dani if she's here that our teacher has a message for her from a guardian."

A guardian? Grandma?

"Will do." the staff member said.

Shawn left the study hall and I stood up and sighed. I had a hundred thoughts running through my head, one of them praying that I didn't leave a mess in her home.

I spotted the book I needed and took it to my table. I sat down and the staff member walked over to me.

"You heard?" she asked me.

"I did." I replied back.

"When are you going to retrieve the message?"

"After I write down this last bit of information." I said while opening the book and flipping to the correct page.

"Okay, and Dani don't pay Shawn no mind. He's just one of these bad kids acting up."

"As if I could ignore him." I roll my eyes remembering his constant one-sided talk during class. "He always doing and saying things while sitting one foot away."

"He'll get whats coming to him one day." she said before walking away.

I pick up my mechanical pencil and quickly write down the details. "I hope so." I mumbled under my breath.

-------

I walked to Building E to retrieve my message from my guardian, and walk in to see my teacher wearing a worried expression on her face.

"Come in Dani." she said to me and motioning to the chair in front of her desk.

I walk over and sit down in the chair. "Is there something wrong?"

"Uh..." she held a piece of paper in her hand. "Before I say this, you are not to run out this school."

I was confused. What did she mean by that?

"Sure...I guess?" I replied.

She hesitantly handed me the paper. I took it and read it.

I scuffed then started bursting out laughing. "Oh wow! Good one! I never thought you had it in you to tell jokes!"

Her facial expression never changed. "I'm sorry Dani."

I clenched the paper in my hand and stood up. "This is a lie! She's not dead! She's alive and waiting for me at home! She'll be cooking that casserole I get tired of eating a lot! She'll be in the garden plucking weeds! She'll be holding my textbooks and ready to tutor me! She's not dead!" I used both of my balled up fists to hit her desk over and over again. "She's not dead! She's not dead! She's not fucking dead!"

I was trembling and hot tears streamed down my face. I sobbed and fell to my knees. "S-she's not dead...she's alive...she's at home...she's still alive i'm telling you."

My teacher sighed. "Dani...get up please."

I sniffled and slowly stood up on my feet. I looked up at her in the eyes. "...sorry..." I whispered before I took off running for my car.

I past by everyone as I ran there as fast as I could.

My grandma's not dead and i'll prove it.

She promised to stay alive to see me graduate Beach University at the top of my class. She promised.

She would never die on me this early...s-she promised.
