Chapter 2: Chapter 2

I stood silently staring out the window of the gas station. I had just arrived, and I had no clue where I was going. The Beta of the Keystone Pack which was the pack who had let me, and my mom live there…the Beta was bringing me back to my "original" pack. I never knew much about them. My mother didn't exactly speak about her pack…or my father very often. If ever. She would start to tell me something and then immediately stop.

Something about the air smelled familiar. It was odd, I couldn't shift like a normal shifter, but I did have heightened senses. It was the only thing that kept me from being just plain human, minus the shifter blood in me of course.

"Emmry?" The Beta walked around the car and smiled a little at me. "You okay?" I shrugged and looked down.

"I'm fine." I couldn't look him in the eye. He was huge and terrifying like most shifters I'd met. They were almost always taller than me and demanded a lot more than I could give. I could barely talk to strangers let alone let them get close enough to want to turn them from strangers to friends.

"My Alpha…when we were going through your old…house…we found something we thought you might want. It's a letter…actually a few letters from your mother." The Beta handed me the stack of letters and sighed. "I wanted to give them to you before we got all the way here, but Alpha thought it would be better if I gave them to you while we were closer."

I had a small frown on my lips as I studied the envelope.

"Emmry, can you get in the car? You can read them while we drive." The Beta pushed me a little towards the door and then helped me get inside before shutting the door.

I couldn't stop my mind from racing. What was this letter… slowly I opened the letter?

My Dearest Emmry,

I am so sorry if you are reading this, I'm guessing this means I was not able to outrun him forever. I am so sorry my darling for all this pain that it must have caused you. I'm sure you are confused.

I need you to know that I love you and I always will. I'm also hoping that the Alpha that found my first letter is taking you to our home. Your home. The pack you were born in the Palmetto Pack. I know we haven't…we don't talk about what happened all those years ago, but I want you to go home back to your family.

In order to protect you I had to take you away. I had to save you; your father disagreed with my plan. So, I didn't give him a choice. I left with you as soon as I could without a trace. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do…but that's where I hope you're going Emmry to your father. He's the only one that can protect you now.

I will always be with you my sweet girl.

Love,

Mom

Tears were streaming down my face and onto the paper. I quickly wiped my eyes and looked out the window. I'm going to my father's pack…she never talked about him. I think it hurt her too much. If I was the reason, she had to leave him…how...how did she not blame me? I wonder if this man who is my father will blame me for what happened.

"Emmry?" The Beta sounded concerned his hand reached out to comfort me and before he could even blink, I had shoved myself as far away from him as I possible could.

"No..no please. Don't ..please don't touch me." I whispered trying to get ahold of myself. It was one the parts of me I hated the most. That fear that never goes away.

Black flashed through his eyes and he nodded quietly before refocusing on the road. I know that he wasn't trying to hurt me but that didn't change my reaction and I don't think it ever will. I had spent a long time trying to push the memory out of my brain I wasn't going to let it overtake me now.

I cleared my throat and slipped the letters into my bag that was by my feet. "I'm sorry about that. Just a bit jumpy."

The Beta didn't respond with words he simply nodded. I felt terrible and I just wanted him to know it wasn't his fault…instead I chose to watch the trees fly by the window and we settled into a nice silence.
