Chapter 1: Prologue: The Day Everything Changed

I've always had a pretty normal life. Normal hobbies, normal interests, and a normal school life. The only unique thing I suppose is that I'm 19 and I've never kissed or been on a date with a girl before. That and I'm kind of a shut in. All of that changed on that day however. It all happened so suddenly.

A severe thunderstorm, greater than anything my hometown had ever seen was coming. People were advised to stay indoors and in their basements if they had any, possibly all day. I was pretty nervous about the storm. It reminded me of the strange "natural disasters' that had been happening every couple of months for nearly a year at that point. There were always two that happened at the same time and normally involved the same kind of elements. Some examples were a tsunami that submerged an entire city underwater, an earthquake so violent it caused the buildings of an entire city to collapse and changed the landscape itself, dozens of hurricanes in one city that picked up and destroyed every single building, and many more. The government may call them natural disasters, but there's nothing natural about a sudden burst of flames that burns an entire town and its people to ash, but spreads no further than that.

I was afraid that our town might be next and couldn't help but freak out. If that was the next, what I called an "unnatural disaster", then it didn't matter where we hid, every single one of us was gonna die. Whenever these unnatural disasters happened there had never been any survivors. It's bizarre, but it didn't surprise me. If there were survivors, no one could get close enough to get through the unnatural disasters to see.

The closer the storm got, the worse I started to feel. My stomach was killing me, my head was pounding, and every other part of my body was aching. I got up to go to the bathroom because I felt like I was actually going to throw up and/or pass out. I reached for the doorknob and it shocked me the second I touched it. "Ow..! Son of a..." I rubbed my hand and walked into the bathroom, kneeling by the toilet. I could feel the hairs on my arms standing up when I got close to the toilet. I was starting to get a really bad feeling about the storm that was coming.

"What if this is happening to everyone..? Maybe this really is..." I started shaking my head, erasing the thought from my mind. I didn't want to believe it was an unnatural disaster. I walked out of the bathroom to go see my parents who were rushing into the basement. My eyes widened as I saw huge black clouds in the sky and yellow sparks surging throughout them. I immediately followed my parents down into the basement, the sick feeling in my gut getting much worse. "I'm gonna die... I'm literally going to die..." I mumbled in fear. "I can't die... I haven't even had a girlfriend yet!" I suddenly blurted out, feeling my face heat up, as I had just said that right in front of my mom, dad, and older brother.

"Calm down bro, we're not gonna die. It's just a bad storm." Said my brother, Raito.

His words didn't comfort me at all. They just made me feel worse in fact. "That's literally the one thing you're never supposed to say in this situation!" As I said that, my entire body suddenly started to hurt ten times worse than before and a loud sound of thunder rumbled the ground. "Agh!" I yelped in pain and fell to my knees, wrapping my arms around my stomach. It hurt so bad I thought I might actually cry. I was literally shaking from the pain. It felt like my skin was being melted off and I was being shocked with a million volts of lightning. Yet the rest of my family was completely fine. "Why is it just me..? What the hell's going on..?!"

My family quickly rushed over to try and help me. "Son, what's wrong?" My dad asked.

"Is this an after effect of the storm..?" My mom looked up at the ceiling with a worried expression

"Sanda..?" Raito frowned, looking more worried than my parents.

I was in far too much pain to speak however, just constantly groaning. My father reached out to touch me, and then it happened. As soon as his hand made contact with my shoulder, he was suddenly sent flying into the wall, sparks coming off his body. I stared at my father wide eyed and managed to let out one word through my pain. "D-Dad..?!"Raito and Mom quickly rushed to his side, but couldn't touch him due to the sparks coming off his body, and I was freaking out at that point. "W-What the hell just happened?! Is he okay?! What did I just do?!"

My stomach suddenly dropped as the smell of burning flesh entered my nostrils. I looked closer at my father and saw steam coming off his body. My eyes widened even more and I gained a new, sick feeling in my gut. The pain was still there, but the pain that ensued after those next two words entered my ears was so much worse. "He's...dead..." My brother looked down at my father, tears in his eyes, but he quickly wiped them. He seemed to have been in a bit of pain just then, but I was in so much pain it could've easily been my imagination, so that's what I played it off as at the time.

Tears welled up in my eyes as well, but they shocked my cheeks. "A-Ack!" I quickly tried wiping them off, but they kept pouring. I had just killed my father and I didn't even know what the hell happened, of course they weren't going to stop. But I didn't have any time to question what was going on. My mother and Raito both looked over at me with the same look on their faces. Was it shock, fear, anger, or just pure disgust? It was a look I had always received from many, but I could never tell what it was. It all happened so fast I didn't have time to figure out what they were feeling.

Before anyone could say another word, dozens of bolts of lightning struck the town all over at once, and one giant bolt slammed right down onto me and obliterated the entire town along with the rest of my family. It was all so sudden. My possible friends, my family, my entire life was erased that day. I thought I had died too, but I realized I was still alive when I could smell the smoke of the destroyed city. When I awoke, the pain was gone, and I saw a pair of legs in front of me. I looked up to see who it was, but a flash of the lightning casted a shadow over their face, and my vision was far too blurry, not to mention all the smoke and dust from the blast. I passed out again before I got a good look at who was standing before me that day. I wish I had never found out who that person was. I wish I had died that day, so I didn't have to go through everything that ensued afterward.
