Chapter 4: Chapter 3 Part 2 - In Which Gill Almost Has A Heart Attack... Twice

Gill almost stopped the games because his brother stepped forward too quickly, but he knew better. It was alright though, Margarie had figured out the pattern.

The fox was basically "cursed" to repeat a pattern as it would be too easy for the fox to win if they were able to turn around as they wish. One time, when Gill was a fox, he was cursed to tap his fingers three times before turning around. Gill was irritated because it was the easiest for his friends to win.

This time, the pattern was timing. He hadn't paying attention but Margarie was. He watched as she stepped forward for an exact thirteen seconds before Milly turned around at exactly fifteen seconds.

Gills face lit up and he bounded quietly through the grass after Milly turned around again. He tried to be quiet because even though Milly was cursed to turn around every fifteen seconds, she could still turn around on her own if they made enough noise.

As Milly returned to her spot, Annabelle the chicken sauntered forward, hoping not to catch her eye. Unfortunately, she did regardless of her slow movement. Milieta pounced on Annabelle in a matter of seconds, Annabelle letting out a hearty screech.

"SQUAWKKK," Annabelle screeched again trying to catch Gill's attention. Milly had her jowls wrapped around Annabelle's thin, crunchable neck and Gill felt a surge of panic. Was she about to snap the small child's neck? Gill wouldn't wait to find out.

"MILIETA. IF I HAVE TO SAY NO EATING ANYONE ONE MORE TIME, YOU WILL BE BANSIHED FROM THE GAME," He announced in his small chicken voice, being surprisingly loud. Milly dropped Annabelle, her mouth dripping with blood, Annabelle crying and protesting in her small fowl ways, her neck scratched up and bleeding. Annabelle left the bounds of the game to sit on the porch of the shack and transformed into her human form, her neck still bleeding but much less than it had appeared as a chicken. She shot Milly a dirty look as she traveled inside to grab a band-aid or two that they had stored in case of accidents.

Gill looked over at Zane-Ashburn who had barely moved since Milly last circled him and felt bad for his older brother. He knew he didn't play video games, so he wasn't sure how to explain the boss-like patterns this game held. He pushed aside his feelings of sympathy and was more determined to win this game for Milieta's punishment. In this game, it didn't matter who you were. No one screws with Annabelle without punishment and Gill intended to make that clear.

Gill moved forward; each step carefully planned. He would make the ten feet soon if every move he simply traveled a foot's distance.

Gill stopped dead in his tracks as Milly suddenly and swiftly turned around to face the small children. She again went for the scare tactic and circled Zane-Ashburn. She seemed to think that Zane-Ashburn was an easy target. Her one mistake was such. She wasn't paying attention to anyone else. First in line was Gill, almost 2 feet from the finish line, but merely 2 inches behind him was Tucson. Since they came in three, not far behind him were Phoenix and Arizona. This was all in a 5-inch radius. Margarie stood 8 centimeters behind Arizona and, despite being a chicken, looked ready to pounce on Milly. She scared Gill slightly, but he would never admit it. Behind Margarie was Mira, who had the longest feathers because her hair had somehow translated to chicken. She was about 6 feet from the finish line, she didn't go very fast. Last and definitely least was Zane-Ashburn who Milly seemed to like to pick on. He was probably 8-9 feet away from the finish, but Gill couldn't tell from so far ahead. He couldn't blame his older brother. He already had a scared disposition, being bullied by her probably didn't make it better.

After tormenting Zane-Ashburn, Milly weaved slowly through each and every one of them, smelling them, detecting the fear in their beady eyes. She nudged Tucson, causing the poor boy to fall over and an animal-like grin appeared on her face as she bit the boy on his neck, making him bleed like Annabelle. Arizona and Phoenix had to stop themselves from laughing and Tucson, who had transformed into his human form gave them a crude symbol with his fingers. Gill had to refrain from laughing as well, trying to stay still while Milly investigated him. His heart was racing, but he didn't move nor make a single sound.

Milly sat back down on her podium, her back turned to the small chicks. Gill ran with his small chicken feet. There was only about a foot's distance left now!

Gill held his breath, determined to win this. He would avenge both his basically, brother, and actual sister.

Just 6 inches now!

Milieta whipped around so quickly, Gill could hardly process it. At the very same moment she had faced them, Gill had pecked her. Annabelle and Tucson started jumping and laughing as they all turned back into humans.

"You did it, Gilly-Fish!!!" Annabelle wrapped her arms around Gill and jumped up. It had been determined by the magic of the game that Gill had won. Gill grew a grin wider than Kentucky and threw his hands up in the air. Milieta sulked, Mira simply sitting next to her, consoling her.

Tucson punched Gill's shoulder, and honestly, he did it too hard for both Gill's shoulder and Tucson's hand ached, but neither said a thing.

"Good job," He choked out. Gill nodded, attempting to smile back but grimacing instead.

"Ahem. Milieta, we need to discuss some things," Gill stared into Milieta's eyes, trying to glare. However, it wasn't a glare and looked somewhat like The Rock smoldering. Milieta blinked at him, feeling intensely awkward. Mira was blushing and trying not to scream. If only he knew I had no interest in boys, Milly thought.

What's with the weird look? Gill thought. Zane-Ashburn simply watched in amusement, knowing that an extreme miscommunication was about to go down. Despite not being particularly fond of the human race, he found them entertaining.

Milly and Gill sat down on some stumps in the bushes that functioned as a private office. Everyone was playing another game outside, but without Gill, there were no transformations, which Zane-Ashburn seemed to find fascinating. Milly stared at the leafy foliage of the ground, wanting to die in a hole if she was right about this next conversation.

"So—" Gill started.

"WAIT- Before, you start… I'm not interested," Milieta said, biting down on the inside of her cheek.

Gill looked at Milly for a moment trying to figure out what she meant. Did she already know about the penalty? Is that her saying she wants to leave the group? Gill thought.

"Why? Is it me?" Gill asked, trying to understand why she would want to leave.

"NONONO, IT'S NOT YOU," Milly panicked. She couldn't explain why she didn't like him; she just knew that he was just a good friend.

"Then you won't mind coming with me, right?" Gill asked, ready to take her out of the office and explain to everyone why she got a penalty.

"I'd really rather not…" Milly didn't want to do anything but be his friend! He's so thick-headed!

"Why not? I mean I suppose you don't have to. We could do it privately as well," Gill trailed. Everyone received public penalties though, so he couldn't see why she felt like it needed to be private.

"NO, NOPE, NUH-UH, I CAN'T SORRY," Milly started to panic, really not wanting to ruin the friendship either way. "YOU'RE MY BEST FRIEND."

"I do this with all my friends. Does it matter if you're my best friend?" Gill was truly puzzled by Milly's odd behavior. Milieta turned a bright, flamboyant red and her eyes widened.

"GOOD GOD, YOU… YOU... YOU PLAYBOY," She yelled louder than she should've.

The cogs started turning in Gill's brain while he went over the last bit of the conversation.

"OH MY GOD, MILLY, NO, NO, NO," Gill himself turned red, which was a rare occurrence considering his cool act in front of his friends. Milly was now confused as he sputtered the word "no" over and over again. What was he intending?

"MILLY, I WAS TALKING ABOUT YOUR PENALTY. I MEANT THAT YOUR PENALTY FOR MAKING THEM BLEED WOULD BE PUBLIC, NOT WHATEVER JUST WENT THROUGH YOUR HEAD!"

Milly gaped in horror as she ran the conversation through her head. She buried her face in her hands, highly embarrassed of her thoughts.

"You're not gonna tell them my secret, right? You must have figured it out by now," her voice was muffled by the sweatshirt she hid her face in.

"Secret? What secret?" Gill wasn't sure what she meant, then again, this whole conversation was an entire mess of not knowing what she meant.

"Ya know…"

"What, the penalty? As I said we can keep it private but, everyone gets public penalties usually," he continued with his explanation of why she could have a private scolding but how that was weird.

"No, you idiot, the one where you figured out, I don't like boys?"

Gill just looked at her, truly feeling like a Gilly-Fish as Annabelle called him. He hadn't come to that conclusion in any way. In fact, she had just exposed herself.

"Uh… Your secret is safe with me because I didn't know that to begin with?" Gill started stuttering. "I-I-I don't-don't like boys ei-either, if that makes you feel better."

A terribly awkward silence ensued. Gill scrambled to grab the stick-gable. He hit the log that functioned as a table.

"Meet-Meeting adjourned. I'll-I'll meet you out there. Ju-Just wait for me," He rubbed his temples, trying to process that way, overly awkward conversation.
