Chapter 3: Two

I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. I looked at it and saw that it was my mom calling.

"Hello mummy." I said.

"Hello Simi." She said and sighed.

"I am sorry for what I said today. I know that I shouldn't have. It was very insensitive and uncalled for.

I know that you feel that I don't understand the situation that you're in but I do. I'm really sorry for betrothing you to someone before you were born. I'll never disturb you about it again. Ejo." (Please). She was apologizing so much and honestly I wasn't angry any more.

"Mummy there's no need to apologize so much. I understand that you had to do what you did as a good friend." I said smiling.

"Ese my daughter." (Thank you). She said and I could hear the smile in her voice.

"Jack da?" (Where is Jack?). She asked.

"I don't know and I really don't care." I muttered the last part.

"I'm here." I heard his voice say from behind me.

I scowled at him before handing the phone over to him. He talked with my mom for about two minutes before hanging up and handing my phone back to me.

"Amebo" (Eavesdropper). I muttered as I scowled.

His eyes shamelessly roamed my body as he waited for me to snap at him but I chose to ignore him.

"Your mom said to inform you that there will be a dinner at the house for both families." He said and I sighed.

Highly expected of my mom.

"Why?" I asked.

"I don't know." He said and walked away.

After a few minutes I decided to call my friend Amara.

She had been my closest friend since I was in Nigeria. We left Nigeria together after secondary school. She was the only one that knew what was going on between Michael and I.

"Hello Amara."

"Hello." She replied.

"How our oga now and the children?" (How are your husband and children?)

"Oga dey fine o. How your own?"

(My husband is fine and yours?)

"Mtchewww." I hissed. "Abeg e dey where e dey." (He's where he's supposed to be.) I replied and she laughed.

"You and this your husband sef." She said still laughing.

"Abeg forget that thing." (Please.) I hissed again.

"Okay o what of about your parents and siblings ?"

"They're fine."

"Pls send my greetings to them." While we were talking another call was coming into my phone from an unknown number.

"Amara can I call you back later abeg I have another call coming in." (Please)

"Okay babe later."

       I picked the call.

"Hello."

"Hi babe."

I already knew who it was from the voice.

"Michael what due you want. I thought I told you never to call me again."

"You know that that its never going to happen. Ife mi , you know that I can never stop loving you." (My love.) He said and I sighed.

"Please don't call my number again."   I said and hung up.

I chose not to think about  Michael after I heard ng up so as not to annoy myself. I just went back to my room and laid in my bed till the day got dark.

I stood up and went to take a shower. I changed into my pyjamas which was a baggy button down shirt and oversized pants.

I looked at the clock and saw that it was 8:10pm so I rushed downstairs for dinner. When I got there Jack was already seated, eating.

"I was starting to think that you weren't hungry. I almost ate everything." He said to me but I didn't reply I just sat down across him and served myself. When I was done serving, I sat down and started eating.

We ate in silence and I kept my eyes fixed on my plate till I was done. Then I took some more and noticed that Jack wasn't eating anymore. The fucker was staring at me.

"Would you please let me eat comfortably?" I asked finally looking up.

"What do you mean?" He asked.

"Stop looking."

"Who's looking at you?"

"I never said you were looking at me." I said and he shut his mouth.

"Is there anything you want?"

"No..nothing - well I just happened to notice that you eat a lot but you still manage to be in such a good shape."

"I work out." I said and he nodded.

"So am I supposed to take that as a compliment?"

"Take it as whatever you want."

"Olodo." (Senseless person.) I muttered.

I noticed that he was still staring but this time at my cleavage. I  pretended not to see him thinking that he'd look away but he didn't.

"I'd appreciate it if you'd stop staring again." I said sighing.

"At what?" He asked

"At what? ... You're really asking me that?" Oh God this guy is really wonderful. Take note of the sarcasm, very important.

I just shook my head stood up and left the table.

"Goodnight." He said. I didn't see but it sounded like he had a smirk on his face.

"Whatever." I said without looking back.

I just went into my room, locked the door, brushed my teeth and went to bed early cause I knew I had to go to work early.

         * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I woke up the next morning to the sound of someone knocking on my door. I stood up stretched and yawned before going to open the door.

I opened the door and saw that it was one of the workers.

"Sorry ma'am but I just came to tell you that dinner is ready and Mr Greene is already at the dinning table." She said smiling.

"Okay thanks. I'll be down in a few minutes." I said small long back. She nodded her head and walked away.

I closed the door and went straight to the bathroom. I had my bath and brushed my teeth. I wrapped my towel around my body and walked to my closet. I picked out a dark red sleeveless jumpsuit made with ankara material and a black suit jacket. I placed them on the bed with my black sandal heels and went to put my underwear on.

I quickly put on light makeup and brushed my hair.

I really need to get this redone.

I rushed out, put my clothes on carried my bag and shoes in my hand and walked downstairs barefoot.

I got to the dinning room and Jack was already there sitting opposite where I stood head down, phone in hand.

I walked to the chair three seats away from Jack and sat down putting my bag on the chair beside me and my shoes on the floor.

"Good morning." I said looking around but I didn't see any of them meaning they had all left.

"Good morning." He replied as I stood up to dish out my food and his.

"Thanks." He said and I nodded and placed my food on my side and started eating.

We sat in silence with him munching on his food and looking at his phone. I quickly ate my food, put my shoes on and stood up.

"Bye." I said walking out if the dinning room. I didn't wait to hear his reply but just quickly got into my car and left the compound.

I got to the office after a 15 minute drive.

The office building wasn't all that big it was a one floored building but had a lot of space inside. I parked my car and got into the building. I got in and was greeted with a series of 'good morning's to which I responded with a smile and a nod of my head.

I got to my office, put my bag down and said a short prayer before sitting in my chair.

My office wasn't exactly an office it was my personal design space at work but I just called it an office to avoid any stress.

And so the day begun I had to supervise the making of our new collection that had just been designed.

I joined in the fun a little bit but not much. I call it fun because my workers to me are like family. They give me the respect that I need and give them all the love and care I have to offer.

While I was working a call came into my phone. I looked at it and saw it was Tolu my older sister.

"Hello." I said bringing the phone to my ear.

"Hello Simi. How are you?" She said

"I am fine and how are your husband and children?" I asked.

She had gotten married immediately after her she graduated from university to a Nigerian guy that she met and had been dating then. My sister attended university here in America that's where she met him.  His name is Stephen Adewale. They were now happily married with two children, Ezra and Lisa. Ezra is five years old but Lisa is still a toddler.

"They're fine, Stephen sends his greetings. Anyway I called because I wanted to know if you would be free later this evening?" She asked.

"Yeah maybe, why?"

"I wanted us to go out to eat."

"Okay. I'll come pick you up by 6 pm." I said sitting in my chair and putting my legs on my desk.

"Okay see you then. Bye." She said and hung up.

I sighed and dropped my phone on the table. I laid back in my chair and closed my eyes. I had to rest my eyes for a little while otherwise I'd have a headache.

The day went on and when it was 5:30 I packed my things said goodbye to the workers and left the office. I went to my car, put my stuff inside and drove out.

I drove for about twenty five minutes before I got there. When I got there I parked my car in my the parking space. My sister's house wasn't all that big, it was a bungalow unlike the house I lived in. The house was just right for her and her family to live in.

I walked to the door and knocked. The door opened to the smiling face of my sister. My sister was an exact photocopy of my mom. She looked exactly like her. All my siblings look like my mom apart from me I was the only one that looked like my mom.

"Howfa?" (How are you?) She asked letting me in.

"I dey and you?" (I'm fine and you.) I said walking to one of the sofas in the living room and sitting down.

I really love the feel of Tolu's house. I always got this warm cozy feeling anytime I came here. It felt like a home where a loving family lives unlike my house.

"What of Ezra and Lisa?" I asked looking back at her as she stood behind me.

"They are I their rooms - Ezra bring your sister and come and see your aunty." She shouted.

Then I heard foot steps and saw Ezra running towards us.

"Kilode ti o fi n sare? Se o fe ki omo ni subu lule?" (Why are you running? Do you want my baby to fall down?) She said to him and I smiled.

"Ma binu ma" (I'm sorry mom.) He said walking towards me. I was surprised that the boy could speak and understand Yoruba. I though he wouldn't want to learn with the excuse that it was uncool.

"Aunty Simi, good evening." He greeted smiling as I hugged him and carried his sister into my lap.

"Big boy, how are you and how is school?"I said putting my hands around him as I asked. I lifted Lisa from my lap and started playing with her and she started laughing and speaking her baby language which I didn't understand. Then I gave her a kiss on her cheek.

"Fine. Aunty Simi it's been a long time since you came to see us." He said pouting.

"I'm sorry I really wanted to come see you last week but I was tied up with work. I am mostly working all the time its not like I  am ignoring you guys. But don't worry one of these days I'll come and take you and your sister out. Is that okay?" I said and he smiled and nodded his head.

Just then Stephen, Tolu's husband walked into the living room.

"Good evening Simi. How are you doing?" He asked me.

"I am doing fine and you?" I said smiling back. I liked Stephen because he was a fine young man and also because he loved my sister, treated her with the respect that she deserved and also made her happy.

"I'm fine. Everything is going smoothly." He said and I smiled and nodded.

"Okay Simi and I need to head out now so we can come back early okay. Babe you know what to do I'll be back as soon as I can." She said so I stood up and gave Lisa to her dad and she squealed as she say his face.

Tolu grabbed her things and I said bye to the family as we left and Ezra reminded me of my promise. We got into my car and drove off.

The place we went to wasn't all that fancy. Just a nice, quiet place where we can sit and discuss.

We sat down and ordered something she didn't order much because she had already eaten at home.

"So what did you want to see me for?" I asked as we started eating.

"Ahah can't I ask to see you again, must it be about something." She exclaimed and I shrugged.

"But anyway I just wanted to know how you are faring. How is your husband treating you?"

"Its actually going better than I expected.  We see each other but not all the time. There are nights when he doesn't come home but that's not my problem. But we are civil to each other, if we see each other, we exchange greetings and sometimes make small talk, but nothing more than that." I said not mentioning what happened the other day.

"That's nice. I expected you to be fighting him everyday." She said laughing.

"Abeg I don't have the time neither do I have the strength God knows." (Please) I hissed.

"Ehen before I forget what of Micheal have you heard from him?" She asked.

"Ah abeg I take God beg you no spoil my food for me na. I want make I chop this food make it go down well." (Please don't make me loose my appetite. I want to  eat and digest my food well.) I said as mood instantly changed on hearing his name.

"Abeg just answer." She said.

"Yes the idiot called me today. I just hung up after he finished talking his rubbish." She was the only one that knew about the calls I was getting from Michael.

"I think you should stop picking his calls he could become violent."

"I have many times but he uses different numbers to call me. As for the violence thing abeg don't worry about that one. Hin no fit do me anything." (he can't do anything.) I told her.

"Okay, if you say so." She sighed and nodded.

We talked about many other different things before I finished my food. When we were done, I dropped her at her house and drove home.
