Chapter 4: Melbourne - Friday

When FP1 rolled around Hunt was feeling confident. Before the session began he was briefed on how to use the wheel and where all the buttons are. He pulled on his balaclava and the fitted his 2019 Valtteri Bottas style helmet on. Final he grabbed his gloves and hopped into his car. As he settled in a powerful heat wave washed over him. He winced at the heat, he knew where the heat came from but had never felt this much before. His engineer noticed this and quickly connected the drink and told Hunt to take a sip of water.

The water was cold but Hunt knew that that would soon change. As he sat in the car waiting the heat grew from unbearable to uncomfortable and gradually became a comfortable warm feeling. As he was settling in his engineer came over the radio.

Jeff: Alright this is the cars first outing take care of the car, also be sure to take the first lap slow. Figure out where to break and test the limits of the car.

Hunt: Copy

As Hunt rolled out of the garage he relaxed. Aside from the different teams he felt right at home. Yet something didn't feel right. He car felt way too stiff in the entry of corners and way too loose on exits. This was strange because of how good the car felt in the Pre-Season Testing. After some getting used to and some setup changes the car felt more balanced and less wild. He slowly started to learn where to brake and what buttons did.

Not only did he grow inside of the car but he also grew as a friendly person to talk to that loved cracking jokes. He quickly became friends with young drivers like Lando and Charles. Aside from the time spent inside of the garage setup tweaking he was a solid driver boasting a P17 lap time in his maiden FP1

His teammate George Russell faired better slotting in P15 ahead of both Alfa Romeo's.

(FP2)

Arriving at FP2 there was a face missing. Hunt had opted to sit out the first 10 minutes and rest his sore arms. Hunt had done so many lap during FP1 that he had drained all his power steering fluid and forced him to push hard.

While his team filled up his power steering reservoir Hunt went back to his hotel room and took an ice bath.

While Hunt was relaxing at is hotel, George was out on track tuning his car and testing the limits. He told the team that the car had tons of straight line speed but had as much downforce as a donkey.

Finally when Hunt got back into the car, the familiar felling of engine heat washed over him. As usual like he always did his engineer came in the the radio test which turned out fine.

Soon after he got settled in and his team crew refilled the power steering fluid he was sent out to do some fine tuning of the car's aero. Immediately Hunt reported that the car felt fast in a straight line but had no braking power. The team lowered the wings of the car. That reduced straight line speed but had much more downforce allowing for a slightly later brake point.

After 30 or so lap for each driver the team brought both cars back in and studied the data. The team ended up planning a new aero set for Hunt allowing more downforce without compromising the speed to much.

During all this both drivers rounded out a very productive day in P15 and P16 topping the HAAS, Alfa Romeo, and Williams drivers. As Hunt was about to leave his team boss stopped him.

"Hey man we just finished looking over the data we think this new wing preset might help you, do you want to try it today?"

Hunt being the person he is said yes.

While he was getting his balaclava and helmet on the team was making adjustments to the wings (like the height of flaps. Basically the thing that killed Max Verstappen's race at the Turkish Grand Prix).

Sadly as soon as he left the garage he noticed that he had to turn the wheel so much more. He reported it to the team and the team brought him back to the pits. (OK so is you're confused the time in the story is about 5:00PM) He was later informed that while the team was changing the wing someone cut a small opening in the tire (a.k.a a puncture). Thus, over the course of the lap the tire let out more and more air. There was also significant wing damage as the tilting car forced the front wing to constantly grind on the track surface which broke off parts of the lower endplate.

Overall, a successful day. They had gotten major things done like the wing setups and fixed minor issues like fuel leaks and throttle issues (minor issues I didn't have a story line for). They had the past behind them and were ready for the events of Sunday practice and Qualifying.

Okay, sorry for the long wait for the new update. I was juggling editing, writing and school. So this chapter took longer then I wanted it too. Anyways, I'll try and be a bit more consistant with my uploads. Promise!
