The pair travelled on most of the night in much the same fashion. Ormh ranting nonsensical gibberish and Dunn occasionally making noises to show he was listening. Well, half listening at least.
In the surrounding countryside the signs of the wither were beginning to show. It should have been the height of summer but a darkness was spreading across the land of Larelle. Cloth trees were bare and rivers that had once brought life to the countryside were drying up.
As the pair traveled onwards these signs of decay became more and more noticeable. It was a sorry sight to behold.
Dunn pulled his cloak around himself and made the sign of the hearth to warm his limbs. "Fire and ash!" He exclaimed. Maybe the elders are right. The magic in this place feels wrong. It feels like death."
Ormh grunted. "They are fools. They know that the fire is dying, but they don't know what to do to stop it. Their quest is doomed, but our path might stand a chance. You brought what I asked you didn't you boy?"
Dunn rummaged in his rucksack and pulled out a box covered in runes of holding. "It wasn't easy, but yes. Every item on the list. What do you even need with these relics anyway?"
Ormh stopped, faced the young bukka and sighed, " It has been years since our clan was blessed with a talent like yours, but you have no idea what is coming. Now is not the time for this discussion, but soon you shall know all. Dunn.... I am sorry for what will come, you must know this above all else. It is my deepest wish that you know this." He looked at the young man before him as a silent tear rolled from his good eye.
Dunn was taken aback. "Sorry!? Sorry for what?"
Dunn watched the old man take a step back, lift his staff and point it towards his companion. He felt the hairs on his neck stand to attention as the crackle of magic filled the air. He felt nothing, but his vision began to fade. The last thing he saw was the face of his mentor- he looked more broken than anything Dunn had ever seen, and then his consciousness faded...
