Chapter 14: First Day (3)

Bella's Pov

It was only for an instant and he was far but I could swear I saw it. His eyes were most definitely different. They were silted and glowing. His eyes made me feel like I was being gazed at by a predator. His usual warmth was nowhere to be seen as he looked this way, prepared to pounce.

Now everyone at the table seems to be talking to him with concerned looks.

Normal pov

The group had barely had a chance to sit before Cain could hear someone talking badly about his new family. He tried hard to ignore it because he could tell it was spoken out of jealousy. The girl Jessica is the largest culprit in his anger increasing his already lousy impression of the annoying girl.

But all his thoughts came to a screeching halt as the girl talked badly about Alice. His head snapped harshly towards her. His body tensed as he prepared to launch himself across the cafeteria. Thankfully Alice's hand gripped his tightly as she spoke softly to him. "Don't mind the rabble Cain. They will always see us as different. As long as we are together nobody's opinion of us matters." Her thumb caressed the top of his hand as she held it, his eyes dimming as they returned to normal.

"She is right, Cain they all judge us out of spite and jealousy. Hell, Alice is weird, Edward is too good for anybody and moody, and Rose is an ice queen. The point is they speak and not think. As the youngest, you should understand how teens are." Edythe spoke from her spot beside Jasper as the stiff boy nodded.

Cain just released a sigh as he nodded self-depreciatingly. "I know I'm still not used to everything. I feel unstable emotionally. Hopefully, it calms down soon. No matter how much I would like I can't just burn everyone who insults us." Cain's eyes were normal again as he played with Alice's fingers in his grip.

At this time Rosalie spoke up. "Edward, what's wrong?" At her words, the whole table looked at him as Cain started to munch some fries. Edward's eyebrows were knitted together as he began to almost as hard as Cain had at the table with Bella and the annoying girl before looking at Cain. "I can't read the new girl's mind. She isn't like you right?"

Taken aback Cain looked over at Bella, who was stealing glances at their table occasionally. "No, as far as I can tell, she is a normal human. There shouldn't be anyone else like me. I torched everything on the way out. Anyone or anything there is either ashes or magma." At this time Cain's eyes had locked with hers as she looked deeply into his eyes as if expecting something.

"I think she might have noticed something about me just now." Cain spoke as he looked back at everyone, his eyes narrowing. "What should we do? I messed up." Cain's head lowered as he questioned. He felt bad it was his first day, and he already might have exposed himself.

"It's all good man. We all make mistakes. I've done far worse, trust me. We can just ride it out, and if something comes of it, we will deal with it then." Emmett spoke up as he patted Cain's back reassuringly. "Ya, as crass as it is, it's just one girl at most we deny it, and they think she is crazy." Rosalie's words comforted Cain far more than Emmett's despite him being the first to speak up for him.

"I hate to distract from Cain for a moment, but we still don't know why I can't read her." Edward's words did just that as they all turned back to look at him like he was stupid as Cain just put his head down and focused on his food. "What does it matter? All this means is that girl is safe from your invasive hobbies." Edythe scoffed at her brother as he just looked away.

Cain and Edward walked to their next class together as Cain rubbed his flat stomach. The two of them didn't talk as they walked. Cain because he still didn't like Edward and Edward because he was still thinking of Bella. It truly bothered the older man that his peeping was countered once again.

But Cain had to admit he enjoyed watching him struggle with being cockblocked. His face barely contained the smirk that threatened to spread as he followed the disgruntled mind reader. But he failed as he thought of something fun he could do.

Arriving at class, they were still one of the first of those to appear as they took their seats. Edward takes the protagonist's seat at the back of the class while Cain sits at the following table over. That way he didn't have to sit with Edward and could ensure he had a good view of the struggling boy.

Just like he had hoped, Cain saw Bella enter the class. What he didn't expect however, was Edward going stiff when he smelled her. His hand was clasping over his nose as she approached him. Looking at his reaction, Cain was confused. He had been told they had eaten not long ago, so it couldn't be that right?

He decided to check on Edward just to be safe. 'Is everything ok? Do you need help or something?' Even though he didn't like Edward he was family, so he wanted to help if needed. Edward just cast a glance at him and shook his head after a slight hesitation. Edward felt he could hold out at least for this one class.
