Chapter 3: Dream and troubles

It was a rainy night. Inside a small apartment in Brooklyn, a father and daughter pair were celebrating the little girl's birthday. She is eight years old now. Sitting on the sofa, singing "Happy Birthday" albeit quite off tone, clapping in front of a big cream cake with a candle; the pair was happy.

-Now make a wish - says the father while looking adoringly at his only daughter. Born with honey blonde hair like her mother's and saphire blue eyes like him, she was the most perfect combination of both of them.

Jonh was a police officer who just finished the Academy in 1985 when he received his first job: patrolling the streets. He was with his partner when suddenly a woman shouted 'thief' near them.

They went running when they had heard the shout and they encountered a man running with a bag followed by a young woman. His partner Fred, was more quick so he went first after the thief and John followed. But as he was passing besides the woman, she tripped over and John caught her. Well, that was the first encounter of John and Mary. They looked into each other eyes and they were like that for a few minutes.

That special moment was interrupted when Fred came back with the thief and the bag. Then, they awkwardly separated from each other. Then John bravely asked for that woman's number. Then they dated for two years and Mary became pregnant so they finally got married. But well, happy married life didn't last long for Jonh and Mary. John was progressing in his career as policeman and he got less and less time to be with his family.

Mary worked as a nurse and had his mother take care of Sam. But as time passed they were more like strangers than a couple. And when they met they fought. So they divorced when Sam was three years old.

Even after all that happened, Jonh was still in love with Mary, and loved their daughter a lot. And ironically, John was spending more time with his daughter after the divorce. He never missed a day that he promised to stay with her.

And so, her eighth birthday was a day like that.

-Umm... I want to go to Miami with mommy and daddy! - says excitedly the little girl.

-Miami? With both of us? Eh... Sweetie, maybe that's a little bit difficult...How about you choose something else?

-Then...Daddy has to shave his mustache!

-Why?

-Because Danna said my dad looks old!

-Is she your friend?

-Yes!

-She should learn to be more polite.

-What did you say dad?

-No...nothing. I'll do it. But tomorrow.

-Then...okay.

They ate big pieces of the cake, watched tv and finally went to sleep.

--------------------

-I told you, you are wrong!

-No, I don't think I am. Your lineage is the chosen one.

Samantha woke up in the middle of the night. Her father was not with her. The storm still was strong. Rain and lightning fell upon the city. She heard her father talking with another man in the apartment.

She got up from the bed and looked trough the half-closed door.

-I know you have a daughter.

-How...?

-I told you I know everything about you. Now choose, you or your daughter?

-Are you serious?

-I'm always serious. I don't understand why you lowly beings tell me almost the same thing everytime I find you. Do you see me laughing?

-It has to be now?

-Yes, I want to finish quickly and go home. I too have a family, you see.

-Then...promise me you won't look for my daughter, leave her live.

-Are you sure?

-Of course. She is my daughter and I want to protect her. Isn't it normal?

-Believe me...there is nothing that you can take for granted anywhere. I have seen a lot of different beings taking different decisions in the same situations. What you believe to be normal is not even one hundreth percent true in this street.

-I know.

Suddenly, John took his pistol and fired against that other man. Sam threw herself at the floor. Sounds of shots echoed in her ears. Finally, the last sound came. Sam looked outside.

But contrary to expected, it was her father who was shot. He fell behind the sofa.

Sam covered her mouth with her hands to hide her sobs. Dad had told her to be brave in all situations. And she knew that right at this moment, her life depended on it.

Sam looked at the man; the man was showing her his back. He wore a denim jacket, blue or gray troussers and brown mountain boots. His hair was short and dark but she couldn't say if it was black or auburn like his father's. Then she saw a tattoo on the back of his neck. It seemed like a snake bitting its tail. That was what she could see. Maybe the tattoo was bigger.

-Arg...I told you I was serious. Why don't you ever listen to me?

The man touched John's body. He was dead.

Sam could see the tattoo a little better. It was a snake. And its eye was so well done, so green, it almost seemed to be alive.

Pit, pit, pit

Sam woke up because her phone was ringing. She lazily caught the phone with her left hand while in bed and answered the call.

She had a bad premonition. After having that dream, she always had troubles.

-Yes?Who is it?

-Detective Morgan, we have a case fifty-one.

'I knew. That dream always comes followed by bad things'

-Tell me the address. I will be there soon.
