Chapter 2: Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Dani-

She walked in with a McDonald's bag like she did every day since she started the week before.

The first day, I told her if I wasn't able make other arrangements for her, then I didn't want to see her filling her body with fast food everyday.

Instead of addressing it again, I waited, and watched.

Once she was seated I went to my mini fridge and grabbed a bag from it with a bottle of water.

I sat the things in front of her, then casually threw her soda and the McDonald's bag away.

I didn't say anything, I just went to get my own lunch from the fridge and began eating.

Brooke: ‘Um, Ma'am?’

‘Um, has no definition, nor value. Don't waste my time by addressing me with worthless words like um.’

Brooke: ‘Sorry, but, what is this?’

‘That is a grilled chicken wrap with honey mustard, a bag of carrots and broccoli, and a cup of ranch dressing.’

She just looked confused.

‘I told you I didn't want to see you putting trash in your body everyday, you apparently had trouble complying, so I corrected the problem myself.’

Brooke: ‘You made me lunch?’

She had a soft, grateful expression and spoke in a tone that made me feel satisfied.

‘Yes, since you don't seem capable.’

Brooke: ‘Thank you Ma'am.’

You would think I handed her the keys to a new car by the grin on her face.

‘You're welcome, eat it all and I may even share my fruit bowl for dessert.’

I'm not sure what it was about her, but I couldn't say I hated having her around.

She wasn't the most intelligent, or organized, but she had so far performed satisfactory work.

She absolutely had a lot to learn, but seemed to have great potential.

There was also a rare innocence to her.

In some moments she almost seemed childlike.

I wanted to find it annoying, but I couldn't.

She seemed to smile the entire time she was eating.

‘Tuesday and Wednesday of next week we'll be in Philadelphia, you need to make our reservation. Call the Ritz Carlton, book the Queen Suite.’

Brooke: ‘Yes Ma'am. May I ask why we're going?’

‘You are going to see me close a forty million dollar deal, and if you're good, you'll get to celebrate with me.’

Her eyes got big as I giggled.

‘Come have some fruit, then I need you to run a few errands.’

She threw away the things and came over, looking a little confused at where to sit.

I patted the corner of my desk and she sat as I handed her a fork.

‘When you run errands, pick up a folding chair for the corner. If we're working on something together I don't want you pulling around one of those bulky leather chairs.’

Brooke: ‘Yes Ma'am.’

‘I'll give you my secondary card, I assume I don't need to address you using it responsibility.’

Brooke: ‘Correct, I'm not about to try and piss you off.’

She said shyly.

‘Good, I'd hate to see a sweet little thing like you destroyed.’

She blushed.

‘So since I'll be making sure you're eating better, are there any allergies you have, anything you really don't like?’

Brooke: ‘I'm sorry about that, I've been meaning to pack lunch, but it's been weird at home, and I've been behind in the mornings. Not sleeping well.’

‘Well it's something I can handle, so don't worry about it, it's nice to pack for two.’

Brooke: ‘Thank you. I don't do really hot, spicy stuff, and I'm not really into seafood, other than that I'm not picky.’

‘Good. Be honest, are you eating breakfast before you come in.’

She hung her head.

‘I've told you how I feel about those energy drinks, start getting here ten minutes early, we'll have breakfast and coffee as we address what we have for each day. If you're running behind in the mornings already, why don't you start going to bed no later than midnight unless you have a good reason? Once in a while, is one thing, but I see how much concealer is under your eyes everyday. Now can you handle midnight on your own or will you need a reminder?’

Brooke: ‘Well, I mean, I could try, but I...I mean...’

‘I'll add a note for each week night to your Google Calendar. If that doesn't seem to do it, I may just have to start texting, and if I alter my own sleep schedule to fix yours, you'd better be going to bed when you're told young lady.’
