Chapter 2: Chapter One

Erin's POV:

"That would be $12.49."

Overwhelmed at the price of one small ice cream, Avery's eyes shoot open.

"What?! You've probably done the math wrong! I ordered one small vanilla ice cream in a cup, with two scoops of sprinkles, one scoop of Oreo cookie crumbs, one scoop of mini chocolate chips, a drizzle of caramel, a drizzle of chocolate sauce, topped with a glazed cherry." She argues, pointing her long manicured nail at the poor employee, as well as reaching over the counter to attempt to see the price on the monitor.

Poor him, he looks like a scrawny 14-year old, working because he'd be anywhere but home. His frail body almost shivers at her tone. He readjusts the cap on his head, pushing away the strands of hair covering his forehead hastily.

"Um, sorry Miss, but extra toppings have additional costs." He says in a quiet, shaky voice, his hands gripping the counter tightly to prevent him from possibly fainting due to the wrath of my best friend.

I just offer him a warm smile. He manages to give me a real smile back. My best friend wouldn't wound him too badly. She couldn't be that bad, I tried to convince myself.

"Oh well, here." She says, thrusting him a twenty dollar bill roughly, to which he grabs quickly, shivering at the light brushing of their fingers. He rapidly presses buttons, under the stare of Avery, who is eyeing his actions very carefully.

He struggles to hold the change and the ice cream almost dropping it all over the counter. Only if it's wasn't for Avery, who grabbed the ice cream out of his hand first and stalked away. I take the change out of his hand and hurry after her with my small chocolate ice cream with just rainbow sprinkles, mumbling a 'thank you', in response.

It was pretty decent weather out today, so the both of us decided to head out to the local fair. Reagan sadly couldn't join us, because she had to attend an annual family road trip across the country.

We're like the three musketeers. An inseparable trio.

It was currently only 3pm and we were both exhausted. We already went on a bunch of cool rides and ate a whole lot of food. And when I say a lot, I mean two funnel cakes each, two ice creams, three pops, four large bags of popcorn, and one medium pizza.

I'm surprised neither of us have puked yet.

We decide to go play one more carnival game before heading to Avery's house, which turns out to be ring toss.

The one game I am bomb at.

We rush over to the booth and notice there are already a group of older boys there. We decide stay back and let them finish their game, but it seems like they've noticed us. I can see them sneaking glances at us, the two hottest girls on the planet.

Sorry not sorry, Reagan.

"Look, the one with the nose piercing is definitely staring you up and down." Avery whispers into my ear, standing on her tiptoes as she does so, as she's a few inches shorter than me. The thought brings an unexpected smile on my face, but I brush the thought, thinking of how much older he could be and how much of a nerdy, clumsy soon to be junior I am.

As they finish, the dark skinned guy claims a rematch with the other guy, I suppose an Indian. They create a huge scene and start throwing insults at each other, but they're more comedic than rude. I stifle a laugh and look at Avery to see her ignore the show. But the guy with the nose piercing, jumps in with, "Wait, let the girls go first."

He barely spares us a glance before shifting himself and his friends away from the front of the booth.

Mhm, manners I see.

Shocked at what he said, I just stand there, not able to move my mouth open and speak.

How to talk:

Step 1: open your goddamn mouth

Step 2: say words

Step 3: JUST TAL-

"He's totally into you." She whispers loudly, cutting off my useless thoughts, as she walks by me like a proud mother towards the booth and picks up the rings, waving me over with them. I mumble a quick "thank you" to the boys, not one in particular, before joining her side and picking up my own rings.

"If I win, you have to ask for his number. I'm telling you he likes you. Besides you both would be really cute together." She says overconfidently, clapping her hands with the rings. I roll my eyes dramatically.

You thought.

"Um, that's only if you win, and you know who the champion is." I say with a bit of sass and attitude, straightening my posture to make myself look more confident. She whips her long, dark hair over her shoulder as she turns to get ready for the challenge.

We both go at the same time; Avery gets one out of the five rings, while I get four. Defeated, she says "You should ask for his number anyway," too quiet for even me to hear. Shaking my head no, I turn around to leave.

Just as I'm leaving, nose piercing boy stands in front of me, blocking my way.

"Hey, I wanna challenge you to a game. If I win, you can get my number for free. If you win, I will give you ten bucks. Are you in?" He asks with a glint in his eyes and I see Avery in the back wiggling her eyebrows up and down at me.

At this point, I notice his dark eyes; they look like chocolate fudge, the good kind of brown. And his dark curls sit messily but nicely at the top of his head, with a few curls falling over his forehead, nearing the top of his perfectly shaped eyebrows.

If only my eyebrows looked like that.

He catches me staring, and smirks, also popping a wink my way.

"Stop flattering yourself. You don't look like a carnival game kind of guy anyway." I shrug him off, putting all my effort into not staring at him.

I'm gonna melt.

"I don't think you should be so sure, babygirl." He takes a step making the distance between us almost nonexistent.

"Then game on." I say confidently, taking a few steps back from him to control my breathing from being so freaking close to a hot guy, but I'd never admit to that out loud of course.

After three rounds of tie games, Avery is seated on a bench not far from us with nose piercing guy's friends. It would be good to say, they don't look so comfortable together. With two huge bodies and Avery's tiny one, they've got no extra room and Avery looks like she's about to fall asleep, leaning onto the metal arm rest.

"Ugh, can you just not get one ring in? You're taking up an awful lot of my time." I say frustrated, after oh so many games.

"I would, but then I'd be ten dollars more broke than I am right now." He says with a smirk and I resist the urge to roll his eyes. He just screams 'rich kid', with his jewellery, shoes and clothes.

Pfft! He clearly doesn't know what broke means.

-$326 is a great example, featuring me, myself and I.

I toss my two last rings, only to find out none of them went in. Surprised, I look over to see if he didn't notice, but by the smirk on his face, I know he's already preparing to blurt out his number to me.
